CoEJ Youths Meet Tony BlairLondon, UKA delegation of youths from <strong>the</strong> Council of EuropeanJamaats (CoEJ) attended a breakfast meeting with<strong>for</strong>mer Prime Min<strong>is</strong>ter Tony Blair at <strong>the</strong> Al KhoeiFoundation, on 6 May 2008.<strong>The</strong> delegation included Sadiq Datoo (Chair of CoEJYouth Desk), Fatima Manji (Chair of CoEJ ExternalRelations and Media Desk), Z<strong>is</strong>han Jiwa, Fatim Kurji-Jumabhoy, Mehjabeen Rahim and Sarfraz Jeraj(Secretary of Hyderi Jamaat).<strong>The</strong> topic of d<strong>is</strong>cussion was “Young Muslims and Faithin Britain”. <strong>The</strong> delegation took part in a lively and broadranging d<strong>is</strong>cussion on <strong>is</strong>sues such as <strong>the</strong> Iraq War, peacein <strong>the</strong> Middle East, preventing extrem<strong>is</strong>m amongst young Brit<strong>is</strong>h Muslims and Inter-Faith relations. Tony Blairoutlined h<strong>is</strong> plans and aspirations <strong>for</strong> h<strong>is</strong> newly <strong>for</strong>med Faiths Foundation, explaining that religion could be amajor <strong>for</strong>ce <strong>for</strong> good in <strong>the</strong> modern global<strong>is</strong>ed world.<strong>The</strong> Chairs of CoEJ Youth and Media Desks were also part of <strong>the</strong> greeting party <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mer Prime Min<strong>is</strong>ter.<strong>The</strong>y were able to use th<strong>is</strong> opportunity to briefly introduce <strong>the</strong> work of our community and of CoEJ.Religion & CarpentrySeattle, WashingtonMembers of <strong>the</strong> Ithna-asheri Muslim Association of <strong>the</strong> Northwest (IMAN) joined hands with o<strong>the</strong>r localMuslims, Chr<strong>is</strong>tians and Jews to build homes <strong>for</strong> low-income families on <strong>the</strong> east side of Seattle. <strong>The</strong>7th Annual “Toge<strong>the</strong>r We Build” project <strong>for</strong> Habitat <strong>for</strong> Humanity was scheduled at Snoqualmie Ridge inSnoqualmie, Washington October 10 to 12 and October 16 to 18, 2008.For <strong>the</strong> 7th consecutive year, Toge<strong>the</strong>r We Build has built homes <strong>for</strong> low-income families in Seattle. <strong>The</strong> grouparose out of a Catholic prayer chain which started after <strong>the</strong> 9/11 terror<strong>is</strong>t attacks. It has grown to include 10churches, mosques and synagogues.Among <strong>the</strong> volunteers was Phil Gerson, a retired Boeing employee who belongs to Bellevue’s Temple B’naiTorah, who said that volunteering has deepened h<strong>is</strong> knowledge of Juda<strong>is</strong>m as well as h<strong>is</strong> appreciation ofo<strong>the</strong>r faiths. Gerson calls Kirkland’s Ithnasheri Muslim Association of <strong>the</strong> Northwest (IMAN) h<strong>is</strong> “secondfavouriteplace to worship; whe<strong>the</strong>r it’s a church or a synagogue or a mosque, <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> one God,”Farhad Ahmed said he <strong>is</strong> more familiar with Chr<strong>is</strong>tianity <strong>than</strong> with Juda<strong>is</strong>m.
