Doctoral Students ECI are hosting more DPhils than ever before, with 12 students starting research projects with us in 2006 bringing the total number to 35. Increasing numbers of these students are undertaking international fieldwork, both utilizing existing partnerships and forming new ones with research institutions around the world. We have students examining the impacts of climate change first hand in Amazonia, as well as studies which take place closer to home, in the University’s Wytham Woods. New students are also coming to ECI from successful business careers, to gain the depth of knowledge and understanding needed to underpin their experience in the work place and tackle some of the issues facing the environment in the 21st Century. Allen Shaw returned to ECI to begin his Dphil in 2006 after 15 years working in investment banking, and a year out to do the ECI’s MSc Environmental Change and Management in 2002. His research examines energy investment in the developing world and its impact on climate change, energy security and poverty alleviation. Liana Anderson Carbon dynamics and land cover change over the Amazon forest. Adam Bumpus Carbon Development: a political ecology analysis of carbon offset projects for local development and global climate benefits. Adam’s research looks at the functioning of carbon markets in relation to carbon offsets and the development potential they may hold. The work is internationally focused and has a specific interest in the multi-scalar linkages between networks of actors involved in carbon offsets. Using a political ecology approach - incorporating analyses of human agency, material effects, discourse and political economy - this work analyses the implementation and functioning of carbon offsets projects in Honduras. Particularly, it is comparing a project from the compliance (clean development mechanism) and voluntary (retail carbon offsets) sectors to understand how local actors in developing countries are differentially linked through space and time to carbon consumers in the north through these mechanisms. Alexandra Morel To what extent is palm oil the main driver of deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia and what are the sustainability implications of its expansion? Alexandra’s DPhil focuses on the expansion of oil palm plantations over time in both Malaysia and Indonesia through a combination of large-scale remote sensing at the national scale and extensive field-based “ground-truthing.” This will provide some comparison between rates of expansion in Malaysia and Indonesia as well as information on what percentage of deforestation is due to oil palm cultivation. Current estimates attribute 40 percent of deforested areas in Indonesia being converted to oil palm. It is not straightforward to assess drivers of deforestation, however, as there are several factors to be considered. These may include but are not limited to: land tenure rights, national and/or local forest governance, markets for illegal logging, climatic and environmental variables causing extensive forest fires. Rebecca White Carbon governance in a consumer age: an investigation of the UK’s food system. The production and consumption of food is highly carbon intensive. To achieve the UK’s target of a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, the food system (from ‘plough to plate’) will have to contribute accordingly. Rebecca’s DPhil research hopes to contribute a deeper understanding of how this might be achieved, using particular food goods as case studies. As well as determining carbon reduction options, the project will critically analyse current approaches to carbon governance. In particular it will examine how factors such as power and the networked nature of food production and consumption affect the ability of players in the food system to reduce their carbon impact. Przemyslaw Zelazowski Remote sensing of spatial and temporal patterns in primeval forest areas – from tropical Andes to Europe. Przemyslaw explores a range of techniques which allow for the application of satellite imagery in environmental assessment. The main questions asked are: which forest properties can be analysed through the imagery and how close are they to reality? Comparisons between datasets allow for conclusions about environmental change within forested areas which can be used for predicting future landscapes.
