Her Majesty knewotherwise and was to prove it in spectacular fashion.A new awareness of the full beauty of mudmee wasgenerated when Her Majesty commissioned a wardrobeof the material specially designed by Erik Mortensenof the fashion house, Balmain. This was a well-thoughtmove as mudmee is difficult to tailor. It is of uncommondesign (its patterns are derived largely from motifs foundin nature), and as no two pieces are alike, the originallength must be sufficient to complete each garment. Inthe hands of a renowned couturier the true quality of thematerial and its appeal to an international clientele canbe brought to the fore.The Mudmee Silk Project was the forerunner ofwhat, in 1976, was established as the SUPPORT projectunder Her Majesty’s patronage. This is a comprehensiveprogramme that covers a wide range of traditional craftsand provides training at specialist centres, coveringproduction as well as marketing and promotion. Finishedgoods are sold through the SUPPORT shops and othernon-profit institutions.In popularising the handicrafts, Queen Sirikit hasplayed a vital role. She has advised on the design of“national costumes” for Thai women and has used notonly mudmee silk and cotton in Her own clothes, but alsoother traditional materials such as Thai-style embroideryand woven brocade. On numerous overseas state visitsand at official royal functions, Her Majesty has beenthe ideal ambassador for Thai textiles, showing byexample how they can hold their own in the modernworld of fashion.This is really the key to the enormous success ofSUPPORT, which to date has benefited thousands ofrural families. The work of the foundation is nothing ifnot practical. Villagers learn or re-learn how to maketraditional handicrafts, not so much as craft for craft’ssake (although the preservation of techniques in dangerof dying out is part of it), but more because Queen Sirikithas been instrumental in showing that those handicraftscontinue to have a practical use and a real market value.One might add that Her Majesty has further given Herpeople joy in the rediscovery of the enduring beauty ofThai handicrafts.34

l ’amourLes rues deA street photographer traverses thestreets and walkways of Paris andfinds romance on every corner/ words & photos YanidelAs a street photographer, my main goal is to documentcontemporary society in an unstaged way. To be an invisiblewitness of daily scenes of life and record them with mycamera. With that idea in mind, I prowled the streets ofParis for three years in search of images that would depictlife here at the beginning of the 21st century. Of course,there is the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Coeur and the Louvre,but Paris is not only a collection of buildings and museums.Often called “the city of love”, Paris is about romance. Beit the first passionate weekend of a newly formed pair, along-awaited proposal, or the last-chance trip of an elderlycouple, Paris is flooded by lovers all year long. It wastherefore a logical choice to include romance as one of mymain themes in street photography. Finding scenes withhigh romantic potential is never too difficult in Paris. Thatbeing said, I also wanted my photography to differ fromthe classic black-and-white pictures often associated withthe city. I decided to shoot in colours and make heavy useof blurred backgrounds for a contemporary, yet lyrical feel.Because in the end, though our societies constantly evolve,Paris will always remain the city of love.49

LeftPont des Arts. For the last few years,lovers have sealed their vows ofnever-ending love by attaching a smallpadlock on this bridge. The sceneryfrom the bridges of Paris is amazing,so I made sure to include as muchbackground as possible in this picture.BelowPont de Bir-Hakeim. I feel this photocould have been taken one, 10 or 50years ago – Paris never changes. Itis one of the rare times I used a longlens (85mm) in order to compress thedifferent planes. I recommend the viewsfrom the central section at sunset.51

AboveOn the Seine. This picture is a good example of oneof the traits of my street photography: a focus onthe main subjects with a blurry background. If youhad witnessed this situation, you’d probably onlyremember the kissing couple and the rest wouldremain vague.LeftRooftops above avenue de Friedland. Have you evernoticed the number movies set in Paris that includescenes with views over the city’s roofs ? The Eiffel Toweralways stands there in the background with somelonely soul contemplating the city. This is the feelingI got when taking this shot. I treasure this picture sinceit was taken from the apartment where we resided atthe time. I never met this neighbour though.53

This picture was challenging to take due to thestrong backlight, yet in the end, it is the gentle stare of thewoman that attracts all attention.BelowCanal de la Villette. Each summer, parts of the SeineRiver and its canal piers convert to a beach. Activities arenumerous but sprinklers have become the main draw ofthis event.Opposite pageCentre Pompidou. Seen from the top of the PompidouCentre, humans look like ants. I especially liked theinteraction (or lack of) between the two young people atthe bottom of the frame. It feels like something is going tohappen between them – the beginning of a new love story?54

GALLERYAboveArc de Triomphe. Paris is not only about romance, but alsofashion and glamour. Even driving a Vespa, Parisians willfind a way to be fashionable. For me, this picture shows thecity as a capital of fashion: not only the one found on thecatwalks, but the one experienced daily in the streets.Opposite pageÎle de la Cité. Paris can be magical at night, yet streetphotography becomes more difficult. Lack of light meansyou’ll have to deal with blurring on moving subjects.This wasn’t the case when I shot this picture. The couplestood still for a few minutes gazing at the Seine flowingbelow. A declaration? Words of love? A break-up? Streetphotography allows us only to guess, the real story isalways unknown.56

THAI CULTUREMaking the front page of The NationEnglish language daily on 27 March2012 was a story headlined “ShadowPlay Treasures Return to Thailand”. Ittold of how an American couple haddecided to donate their collection of some 30 antiqueshadow puppets to the Thai government so that thepuppets may be returned to their origins. Cultural newsrarely makes it big in the press, but in this case, asidefrom it being a rare incident of generosity in the artworld, the importance lay in the significance of the artobjects. Shadow puppetry is one of Thailand’s oldestdramatic art forms, an integral part of the country’scultural heritage that today struggles for survival.Known as nang, literally “hide” or“skin”, Thai shadow theatre is probablyas old as the kingdom itself, possiblydating back to the Sukhothai erain the mid-13th century, thoughcertainly firmly established atthe later Thai capital, Ayutthaya,from the mid-14th centuryonwards. Its origins lay inIndia, from where it reachedThailand via Indonesia andMalaysia, and then evolvedinto something essentiallyThai, encompassing diverseart forms, from the initialdrawing of the puppet outlineto the musical accompaniment,as well as influencing the laterdevelopment of khonclassical dance.Today, regrettably, shadowpuppetry is a rarity and the wordnang is better known as referring to themovies (presumably because film is similarly projectedon to a screen). It is, however, still to be found, though notnecessarily where you’d expect it.One such unlikely spot is Wat Khanon in Ratchaburiprovince, about an hour’s drive from Bangkok. Set in aquiet, provincial, almost countrified location, the templecomplex is unremarkable save for a Thai-style teakwoodhouse converted into a museum and a sizeable modern,purpose-built auditorium. The museum houses a collectionof more than 300 shadow puppets, one of the largest inthe country, of which about 60 are on display at any onetime, stunningly backlit in glass cases that are dramaticallyheightened by the traditional setting. To bring it all alive,performances are held in the auditorium on weekends.When I arrived on a weekday morning, a group of youngboys, aged 8–10 years old, were being put through theirpaces by the temple’s abbot, Phra Kru Pitak, who doubles asa shadow puppet teacher. Like a school master with a cane,he was teaching the boys leg postures, tapping a knee hereand there to indicate the correct stance, and then settingthe rhythm for alternately raising first right leg and thenthe left while holding aloft a hooped cane, a stand-in forthe two sticks by which puppets are manipulated. “It’s thesame as khon dance,” Phra Kru Pitak explained to me later.“Puppeteers must move their bodies in the right way so as toproperly animate the puppets they are holding. Boys usuallystart training when they are 6 or 7 years old, and it takesabout five years for them to become proficient.”It’s not as easy as you might think. The puppetsnang yai (“big”, as opposed to the smaller puppets ofnang talung, which is a southern Thai version of shadow62

theatre) measure as much as 150 centimetres wide and 175centimetres high, and are attached to two sticks by whichthey are held up against a backlit translucent screen.It all sounded a bit awkward to me, but Phra Kru Pitakarranged for his pupils to give a demonstration in theauditorium. There, like in a cinema, things came to lifewhen the windows were shuttered and there was only theilluminated screen.A far cry from the computer-generated images we’vecome to take for granted in today’s movies, the puppetsnonetheless began to captivate me, their animationstrangely beguiling, unreal and yet firing the imaginationwith the magic of theatre. In a full performance, the actionwould be enlivened by a classical piphat music ensemblewhich, with the rapid-paced ranat (a xylophone-likeinstrument), the beat of drums and a narrator to keep youup to pace with the storyline.The puppet museum and theatre at Wat Khanon hasbecome widely recognised as an important conservationeffort to keep nang yai alive, receiving a cultural heritageaward from the Asia Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCOin 2007. “In former times,” Phra Kru Pitak explained,“it was quite common for nobles and the well-to-do tobequeath their private puppet collections to a temple ontheir death. And so it began in Wat Khanon more than acentury ago, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn.”Since those days, successive abbots have kept up thetradition of preserving nang yai. “My main aim,” saidPhra Kru Pitak, “is to continue the work of previousabbots in preserving the art, and in bringing togetherthe art and the community.”Wat Khanon received an enormous boost in 1989, whenHer Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorngraciously became a royal patron. She decreed that all 313figures be preserved and a new replacement collection bemade for performances. THAI CULTUREพิพิธภัณฑ์หนังใหญ่วัดขนอนเรื่องโดย จอห์น ฮอสกินแปลและเรียบเรียงโดย จิตติณี รองหานามพาดหัวข่าวหน้าหนึ่งของหนังสือพิมพ์ เดอะ เนชั่น ประจำา“ชุดหนังใหญ่อันล้ำาค่าหวนคืนสู่มาตุภูมิ”วันที่ 27 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2555 ทำาให้ทราบว่าคู่สามีภรรยาชาวอเมริกันตัดสินใจบริจาคชุดหนังใหญ่โบราณ 30 ตัว ให้กับรัฐบาลไทย เพื่อให้สมบัติทางวัฒนธรรมอันล้ำาค่าได้หวนคืนสู่ถิ่นกำาเนิด ตามปกติแล้วข่าวด้านวัฒนธรรมจะไม่ค่อยเป็นข่าวใหญ่สักเท่าใดนัก แต่ในกรณีนี้ที่ครึกโครมขึ้นมาก็เพราะว่านอกจากจะเป็นเรื่องของความมีน้ำาใจที่หาได้ยากยิ่งในโลกแห่งศิลปะแล้ว ความสำาคัญยังอยู่ที่ตัววัตถุทางศิลปะนั้นเองหรือจะให้พูดง่ายๆ ก็คือ หนังใหญ่นั้นนับเป็นศิลปะรูปแบบหนึ่งที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดของประเทศไทย เป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมอันสำาคัญยิ่งที่กำาลังจะเลือนหายไปในปัจจุบันอย่างไรก็ตาม ในวันนี้ศิลปะอันทรงคุณค่านี้ก็ยังคงอยู่ แม้ว่าจะอยู่ในที่ที่เราอาจจะคาดไม่ถึง นั่นคือที่วัดขนอน จังหวัดราชบุรี โดยภายในบริเวณวัดจะมีบ้านไม้สักทรงไทยที่ได้รับการดัดแปลงให้เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์และโรงละครร่วมสมัยขนาดใหญ่พอดู สำาหรับพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้มีหนังใหญ่อยู่กว่า 300 ตัว ซึ่งอาจเรียกได้ว่าเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์หนังใหญ่ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทยอีกแห่งหนึ่ง แต่ในการจัดแสดงนั้นจะจัดแสดงคราวละ 60 ตัว โดยจะนำาหุ่นเงาใส่ไว้ในฉากกระจกและฉายไฟแบล็คไลท์เพื่อให้เกิดเป็นเงาสูงใหญ่ แล้วเมื่อสุดสัปดาห์มาถึง หนังใหญ่เหล่านี้ก็จะกลับมามีชีวิตโลดแล่นอยู่ในโรงละครผมไปถึงพิพิธภัณฑ์ตอนเช้าวันสุดสัปดาห์ เห็นกลุ่มเด็กชายตัวน้อยอายุประมาณ 8-10 ปี กำาลังหัดก้าวเท้าตามพระครูพิทักษ์ท่านเจ้าอาวาสวัดผู้ทำาหน้าที่เป็นครูสอนการแสดงหนังใหญ่ไปด้วยโดยขณะนั้นท่านกำาลังสอนให้เด็กๆ รู้จักการวางขา ในมือถือไม้เท้าคอยแตะไปที่เข่าตรงนั้นบ้างตรงนี้บ้างเพื่อให้เด็กๆ คอยแก้ไขท่าทางให้ถูกต้อง จากนั้นก็คอยให้จังหวะให้นักเรียนตัวน้อยยกขาขวาสลับซ้ายพร้อมกับยกไม้คีบหุ่นที่เป็นตัวบังคับในการเชิดหุ่น‘หนังใหญ่ก็เหมือนกับโขนนั่นแหละ’ ท่านพระครูอธิบายให้ผมฟัง‘คนเชิดหนังต้องเคลื่อนไหวร่างกายให้ถูกตามจังหวะลีลาท่าทางของตัวหนังที่เชิด เด็กๆ พวกนี้หัดเชิดมาตั้งแต่อายุ 6-7 ขวบกว่าจะเก่งได้ก็ต้องฝึกกันอย่างน้อย 5 ปี นู่นล่ะ’64

กระนั้น ทักษะสำาคัญในการสร้างหนังใหญ่ไม่ได้มีเพียงฝีมือการแสดงเท่านั้น หากแต่ยังรวมถึงศิลปะในการทำาตัวหนังซึ่งเป็นหนังสัตว์ที่นำามาฉลุลายไว้อย่างวิจิตรบรรจง ในสมัยโบราณ ช่างจะเขียนลายลงบนแผ่นหนังโดยตรง แต่ในปัจจุบันจะนำาแบบกระดาษมาวางทับหนังที่ฟอกและยืดแล้ว แต่ในการฉลุลายก็ยังต้องอาศัยเครื่องมือตามแบบโบราณอันได้แก่ มีดแกะสลักโค้งคมและมุกหรือปัจจุบันเรียกว่าตาไก่ขนาดต่างๆ ตอกให้เป็นลายตามแม่แบบด้วยความประณีต โดยช่างจะนำาหนังไปขึงไว้บนบล็อคไม้แล้วตัดและตอกเป็นลวดลาย จากนั้นก็จะนำาตัวหนังไปลงสีให้มีความเข้มจางต่างกันไปในแต่ละส่วนตามที่ต้องการจะให้เห็นเป็นเงาเวลาเชิดหากช่างมีความชำานาญมากก็อาจสามารถทำาหนังตัวเล็กๆ ได้ภายในหนึ่งวัน แต่ถ้าหากหนังตัวใหญ่ที่มีลวดลายซับซ้อนก็อาจต้องใช้เวลาทำาประมาณ 1-3 สัปดาห์ทุกวันนี้ พิพิธภัณฑ์หนังใหญ่วัดขนอนเป็นที่รู้จักและยอมรับอย่างกว้างขวางว่าเป็นส่วนสำาคัญในการอนุรักษ์หนังใหญ่ให้มีชีวิตอยู่ต่อไป และได้รับรางวัลด้านอนุรักษ์มรดกทางวัฒนธรรมจากศูนย์วัฒนธรรมแห่งเอเชียและแปซิฟิกเพื่อยูเนสโก (ACCU)ใน พ.ศ. 2550 อย่างไรก็ดี ผมยังคงใคร่รู้ว่าทำาไมวัดจึงมีบทบาทสำาคัญในการรักษาการแสดงหนังใหญ่นี้ไว้ แทนที่จะเป็นองค์กรทางวัฒนธรรม แต่ก็ได้รับคำาอธิบายจากท่านพระครูว่าตามเข็มนาฬิกาจากซ้ายงานแกะสลักหนังใหญ่ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์หนังใหญ่วัดขนอนพระครูพิทักษ์และลูกศิษย์‘แต่ก่อน มันเป็นเรื่องค่อนข้างปกติที่เหล่าเจ้าขุนมูลนายหรือพ่อค้าคหบดีผู้ร่ำารวยจะมอบชุดหนังใหญ่ให้ไว้กับวัดเมื่อเสียชีวิต นั่นก็เลยกลายเป็นจุดกำาเนิดของวัดขนอนซึ่งมีอายุยาวนานกว่าศตวรรษโดยเริ่มก่อตั้งมาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5’จากการพูดคุย ผมสามารถสัมผัสความมุ่งมั่นอย่างแรงกล้าของพระครูพิทักษ์ในการที่จะสืบสานหนังใหญ่ให้อยู่คู่สังคมไทยต่อไป แต่เมื่อถามว่าท่านกลัวหรือไม่ว่าศิลปะแขนงนี้จะสูญหายไปในสักวันหนึ่ง ‘ในประเทศไทยเรายังมีคนอีกหลายคนที่ยังซาบซึ้งในวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิมที่สืบทอดกันมา และตราบใดที่เรายังมีคนเหล่านี้อยู่ อาตมาก็ไม่กลัวอะไรหรอก’ ท่านพระครูตอบแล้วผายมือไปยังพิพิธภัณฑ์ก่อนจะทิ้งท้ายว่า ‘แต่ถึงมันจะไปไม่รอดจริงๆ บรรดาหนังใหญ่ก็จะยังคงอยู่ที่พิพิธภัณฑ์นี้ต่อไปอยู่นั่นเอง’65

The Airports of Thailand(AOT) has been preparing its facilitiesto accommodate A380 operations sincethe opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport,which features five contact gates thathave three aerobridges each to servethe A380 aircraft. First A380Roll-Out fromPaint HangarThai Airways International’s first Airbus A380-800aircraft bearing the airline’s distinctive livery has beenrolled out from the Airbus paint shop in Hamburg,Germany. This important milestone marks the unveiling of thefirst fully painted Airbus A380 for Thailand’s national carrier.THAI’s symbol is an abstract image suggesting movement,inspired by the crown flower used in Thai handicraft workand Thai garlands in traditional ceremonies such as weddingsand auspicious events. Livery colours are purple, magenta andgold representing a Thai orchid, shimmering Thai silk and thebrilliance of a Thai temple, respectively.THAI will become the ninth operator of the A380 when ittakes delivery of its first A380 aircraft in the third quarter thisyear. They assisttourists to communicate with authorities, whether it’s filing acomplaint, reporting a crime or cancelling lost credit or ATMcards. Thanks to THAI volunteers’ years of experience in theservice industry, they were able to deal with each case withgreat speed and efficiency.Each volunteer works genuinely to help every tourist.
