In the metropolitan areas ofBangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai,it’s not uncommon to see grownupsunleash their inner warrior by drivingaround in pickup trucks, wieldinghigh-tech water guns and showeringunsuspecting passersby. The capital’sKhao San Road and inner-city ChiangMai surrounding the moat areparticularly notorious “war zones”,where it’s no-holds-barred streetparties lasting well into the wee hoursof the morning. Anyone planning tojoin in the fun is well-advised to wearold clothes and ziplock-protect orleave behind cameras, mobile phonesand other valuables, as absolutelyeverything will get soaked!With Songkran being thecountry’s longest holiday period aswell as the hottest time of the year,there’s an exodus of urbanites whohead to the seaside to cool off. Manycoastal communities have a fullcalendar of events to keep residentsand holidaymakers entertained fordays on end. The word “Songkran”is from the Sanskrit word that means“passage” or “course”. Originallyreferring to the position of the sunwithin the solar system, the word“Songkran” eventually becamesynonymous with the period whenthe sun enters the Aries zodiac, inApril. Formerly set by astrologicalcalculation, Thai New Year is nowofficially fixed from 13–15 April inBangkok, although in other parts ofthe country, festivities canlast up to nine days.The start of anew year signifies new beginnings,renewal and a time of reflection.Thais hold several important ritesand rituals associated with new year’sblessings and Buddhist merit-making,most notably the traditional springcleaning of the home (13 April, “WanSangkhan Lhong”), the making ofofferings to local temples and monks,building sand stupas (14 April, “WanNao” or “Wan Da”) and the cleansingof Buddha images (15 April, “WanPayawan”). Traditional Songkran alsoinvolves the sprinkling of water by theyounger generation on their elders’hands as a sign of respect and forblessings. Mon Songkranis held a few days later than the Thaiversion in Mon settlements suchas Sangkhlaburi, Ratchaburi, KohKred in Nonthaburi and just south ofBangkok in Phra Phradaeng, wherethere are folk games, beauty contestsand a massive parade of elaboratefloats to enjoy.Philip notes that while festivalstoday are often showcases of highculture, in the past, certain festivalswere times of managed transgression.“Thailand has historically been afairly controlled society with a stricthierarchy. Like many societies aroundthe world, they have special days whenthe order is turned upside down,” heexplains. “Like a pressure valve to letoff steam, it enables the hierarchy tomaintain its stability by letting peoplebreak the rules.”For young people duringSongkran, this translates into a limitedlicence to flirt. Men will fling waterat the object of their affections anddating games are played everywhere.“The Mon even organise courtinggames called ‘saba’ for the youngmen and women that go on late intothe night,” Philip says. “They’re alldressed up in traditional costumes. It’sfunny and cheeky, but all within thetraditional rules.”Anywhere with major temples orrevered Buddha images are also goodplaces to witness Songkran rites, suchas the tradition of parading out theimage for the public to make meritby sprinkling it with lustral water.In the north, many temples enabledevotees to winch a bird-shapedvessel on a wire up the side of a chedi(or stupa) to douse it with holy water.Interesting places to see this andother Songkran rituals are Wat PhraSingh in Chiang Mai or Wat PhraThat Lampang Luang in Lampang.In Bangkok, Phra Buddha Sihing,one of the country’s most reveredBuddha statues, is taken out of itsregular residence at BuddhaisawanChapel in the National Museum, anddisplayed out front on the SanamLuang ground. “It’s near Khao SanRoad, so within a small area you cansee the most commercial and alsothe most respectful examples ofSongkran,” he remarks.Philip reckons that for manyvisitors, the water fight elementcan have a limited shelf life. “Thefirst day is fun, the second day it’sgetting relentless and by the thirdday, you’re asking yourself ‘oh god,where can I hide?’ But if you samplesomething of the traditional culture,the whole experience becomes muchmore fulfilling and memorable,” hesays. “You don’t have to be obsessedwith traditions to appreciate thatthere’s something special aboutthe Songkran blessing of elders,the Buddha images and the monksthat leaves you with a warm, fuzzyfeeling. Songkran is an expression offriendship and gratitude, and I thinkanyone can respond to that.”30

Heaffords himself a minute. But that was a lie. In reality,he’d drop me off and go drinkingwith his friends. During the walkhome, I’d recount the plotline to himin case mum asked. It’s this theatrethat planted my storytelling seeds.”Jiufen, a former goldmineboomtown that fell into disrepairafter the Japanese left – and furtherstill when the ore deposits ran out inthe ’50s – has served as the backdropfor two of Asia’s most polishedcinematic jewels. Wu contemporaryand fellow New Wave-clubber HouHsiao Hsien shot his seminal filmCity of Sadness here. Later on, animemaster Hayao Miyazaki used thetown as a model for the fantasticalmountain hamlet in Spirited Away.And looking out at the view, it’seasy to see why.Also outside is director Wu. Heis all coiled energy and excitablechatter as he practically sprints upthe strait-shot charcoal granite stepsof Old Street. There’s only about300 of them. My soot-heavy lungsbeg to differ: “Wu’s lying again.He’s a polished storyteller with aself-confessed history of fabrication.There must be thousands of thesesteps,” they heave.I ignore the burning in my lungsand voice in my head, and presson past the hanging red lanternsthat frame the authoritarian greystairs and buttress the cherry woodteahouses and antique stores liningthe climb. The earthy smell of friedtaro balls, the town specialty, iseverywhere. It smells heavy enoughto touch.By the time we reach the top, Isee why Wu was pressing so hard.The view is a screensaver keeper.Juifen gives way to the patchworkgreens of the mountains beforedropping off to the chalky coastlinebelow. The little fishing coves andcobalt blue of the Pacific Oceanbelow wait beyond that. “Jiufen’s a great example of howthe arts can serve as an impetus fortourism. Sure, it’s beautiful, but mostpeople come here because of theirvisceral connections to the filmsthey’ve seen,” says Wu. He’s twicemy age and looks like he could run amarathon. I’m pretty sure I hate him.Hate or not, Wu’s art-fortourism’s-sakecomment echoes anongoing Taipei blueprint to raise theprofile of the capital and ratchet uptourism receipts. Taiwan’s diplomaticisolation has left the island, 180kilometres off China’s southerncoast, struggling to find a spot underthe bright lights of the world stage.As such, it’s an overlooked – andwell underrated – destination. Thegovernment hopes to change thatby pumping hundreds of millions ofdollars into art incubators, museumsand galleries. And with 2011 beinga banner year for foreign arrivals, itseems to be working.On the way back to easternTaipei and a date with the NationalPalace Museum – home to theworld’s best Chinese art collectionand a top-five global museum pick– I make a mental note of the travelstory clichés of an economicallydeveloped East Asian city: straddlesthe modern and traditional? Check.A peppering of charming parks,temples and Chinese gardensfilled with old people exercising?Check. Glitzy Ginza-esqueshopping and entertainment areasdisbursed among run-down pillboxcommunities where air conditionerunits and spaghetti-strand electriclines hang ominously overhead?Check. An orderly, efficient anduser-friendly transportation system?Check. An abundance of street food,hip cafés and fine dining? Check.With that list safely storedaway, we pull up to the museum.It’s decked out like a miniatureversion of Beijing’s Forbidden City,which is fitting, considering thebulk of the 680,000 pieces were“nationalised” from the Chineseimperial collection. Later, whenCold War warrior GeneralissimoChiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwanafter being routed by Mao Zedong’sforces in 1949, he brought thecollection with him. Whether Chiang, who was derisivelyknown as “Cash-My-Check” in the western diplomaticcircles of the time, wanted to safeguard the collection orsaw it as the spoils of war is still open to fierce debate.What isn’t questioned, however, is the role thatthe collection has played in propping up the arts in thecity. “The sheer breadth and quality of it allows themuseum to trade pieces with the best museums in theworld,” says Frank Mueller, a nauseatingly good-lookingChinese art PhD candidate from Berlin. “When you canget access to the Louvre, British Museum and New YorkMet, it filters down through the entire community. I’ve also grown a slight limp thanks toWu’s Jiufen death march.According to the locals who know, Din Tai Funghad been serving up the best xiao long bao, or steameddumplings, for decades before it was “discovered” andvoted the world’s seventh best restaurant by The New YorkTimes in 1993.It’s one of the omnipresent ironies of the Taiwan-Chinarelationship that much of the best of Chinese culture isfound outside the Middle Kingdom’s borders. Food is one ofthese areas where Taipei holds its own with its Shanghai andBeijing big brothers on the mainland.Din Tai Fung doesn’t disappoint. Each steamedbamboo basket gives way to elegant pork, shrimp andcrab roe pleated dumplings, each one filled with anintense broth that ostensibly renders it the inverse ofchicken and dumpling soup. We churn through sixbaskets between the three of us.My friend calls them “foie gras taste for a potatochip budget”. We debate whether they are the snackfood of the people, before agreeing that they areindeed the People’s Champ – but only if that champwas wrapped in a robe of layered sophistication.It’s a fitting end to a highbrow day. And onethat will pick up again tomorrow when we check outthe Taipei Fine Arts Museum. AboveThere are number of Tibetan monasteries in the proximity of Lijiang, Yunnan Province. Most of them weredamaged during the Cultural Revolution, but Wenbi Si (also known as Wenfeng Monastery) is in very goodshape and sits perched high on a hillside with stunning views. The monks are extremely welcoming and willteach visitors about their ceremonies and the meanings of the wall frescos if asked. In their free time, theyounger lamas play basketball and visitors are welcome to join in.LeftTiger Leaping Gorge, 60 kilometres north of Lijiang, is one of the deepest gorges in the world. Approximately15 kilometres in length, it requires a precipitous 3,900-metre descent via rocky path to reach the Jinsha River.To step onto Tiger Leaping Stone surrounded by the rushing waters is to experience nature in all her might.It is from here that a tiger is said to have once leapt the Yangtze, giving the gorge its name.47

Ofthe 1.5 million bottles of wine now produced annuallyby high-risk innovators and their romantic notions,quality is unquestionably the paramount issue. Fromthe first releases of Chenin Blanc nearly 20 years ago,reactions have been encouraging. For the reds, madealmost exclusively from Syrah grapes, progress has beenmeasured but moving steadily forward. Globally, criticsare now taking notice of what Australian wine writerDenis Gastin creatively dubbed “New Latitude” wines.Nikki Lohitnavy, winemaker for her family’sGranMonte winery and the first Thai woman tograduate from the prestigious University of Adelaideoenology school in Australia, talks about making wine insubtropical Thailand: “Many people think that becausethe vines don’t go dormant, it isn’t possible to get theconcentration and depth required for high-qualitywines,” she says. “This simply isn’t true. Dormancyis just the vine’s way of protecting itself from freezingweather. We prune the shoots that would normallyproduce a second crop annually to keep the vine fromflowering, thereby focusing its strength on a single crop.The only difference in our warmer climate is that theleaves continue to appear all year.“We do have problems with various moulds andother diseases that propagate more easily in humidconditions, but the Royal Projects in Chiang Mai yearsago helped us identify the types of vines least susceptibleto common vineyard maladies. We use those studies inour own varietal and clonal selections at GranMonte.”Nikki knows whereof she speaks, as her wines haveamassed more than 40 awards from major competitionsin Europe and Asia during her short but impressive fouryears of making the wine and managing the vineyardsat GranMonte.The first of Thailand’s wine pioneers wasDr. Chaijudh Karnasuta, founder and chairman ofconstruction giant Ital-Thai Co. Ltd. In the 1980sfollowing extensive research into soil and weatherconditions, he purchased several hundred acres of landin Thailand’s north central province of Loei and planted200 acres of Chenin Blanc and Syrah grapes. Chateau deLoei wines debuted on Bangkok retailers’ shelves in 1995and became the first Thai wines to reach European andJapanese markets.At the same time, the young scion of the Red Bullenergy drink family, Chalerm Yoovidhya, enteredthe wine business with Siam Winery. Using Málagaand Pokdom table grapes from his company’s popular“floating vineyards”, Chalerm produced the popularSPY Wine Cooler drinks and Chatemp still wines. Hisexpanded efforts now include major plantings of Vitisvinifera (common grape vine) grapes at Hua Hin HillsVineyard three hours south of Bangkok.54

Three additional victims of the wine bug acquiredland and planted vineyards during the 1990s inthe picturesque hills bordering Khao Yai NationalPark about two hours north of Bangkok. Beer baronPiya Bhirombhakdi, chairman of Singha BrewingCo., planted 200 acres of his 600-acre holding inTempranillo, Syrah and Chenin Blanc and built astate-of-the-art winery on his PB Valley estate.Nearby, commercial management executive VisoothLohitnavy acquired 50 acres of prime land and beganplanting selected clones of Syrah and Chenin Blanc.A visitors’ centre and small restaurant completed theproperty he called GranMonte Estate. An hour east atthe opposite end of Khao Yai park, construction engineerViravat Cholvanich pursued his dream of Napa Valleyin Thailand with additional vineyard plantings near thesmall town of Wang Nam Kheow.Dr. Karnasuta’s Chateau de Loei was the first toattract critical acclaim for Thai-produced wines whenhis Australian consultants entered his winesin international competitions. Siam Wineryfollowed suit with major export efforts andcompetition awards garnered in European marketsfor their Monsoon Valley wines. In 2003, six Thaiwineries formed the Thai Wine Association to unifytheir promotional programmes and standardiselabelling and content disclosure.Since then, dozens of Thai wines have taken part incompetitions around the world. Many of the wines havegarnered favourable reviews and multiple awards, withChenin Blanc, Colombard and blends thereof receivingthe most praise. Rosés made from Syrah have also faredwell and are particularly pleasant in Thailand’s ambientmuggy climate.Reds made mostly from Syrah have taken thelongest to come into their own. Initially, vines werenot well enough established to produce quality fruit,but gradually with better vineyard practices, carefulpresorting prior to crush and precise monitoring offermentation, the wines have improved dramatically.GranMonte is the leader in this category, with Siam’sMonsoon Valley and Village Farm’s La Fleur blendoffering pleasant alternatives. Tempranillo andCabernet Sauvignon are beginning to show promiseas single varietals in recent small lot bottlings by afew wineries.Tasting the wines for yourself is the only sure proofthat Amazing Thailand actually does produce someamazing wines. WORLD CUISINEMacanese cuisine is oftenconsidered the world’sfirst true fusion cuisine.Portuguese troopsbrought to the garrisonsof Macau a taste for the local spices andflavours of Malacca, Brazil, Angola, Goa,Mozambique and other Portuguesecolonies. As they married into the localcommunity, a new cuisine was born.Using exotic produce like turmeric,coconut milk, bacalhau (saltedcodfish), star anise and cinnamon,in addition to Asian ingredients thatwere easer to find, typical Chineseand Portuguese dishes were adaptedto become a cuisine unique to Macau.But with less young people cooking athome today and the city increasinglywelcoming new residents frommainland China, Macanese cuisine isan endangered tradition. Having saidthat, several “old guard” restaurantsremain, and it’s still easy to embark onan authentic food tour here.The sleepy village of Coloanenever seems to get busy, no matterwhat day of the week it is or howbustling the nearby casinos get. Downits ancient cobblestone laneways, theutterly addictive aroma of freshlybaked cakes, muffins and tarts waft,heralding the start of business ofone of Macau’s most iconic culinaryinstitutions. At Lord Stow’s (1 Ruada Tassara; lordstow.com), bakershustle with massive trays of cookies,dense chocolate cakes anddelicate pastries above their heads,in a rush to meet the morning queuesoutside. Around the corner, thebakery’s café is already serving up astorm of lattes and iconic egg tarts.Lord Stow’s egg tarts arelegendary in this part of Asia, andthere is nothing like starting your dayoff with one fresh from the oven. Theyalso serve to illustrate Macau’s uniqueculinary scene. Its proud, whitewashedfaçade opens to a bustling, family-feelrestaurant that’s decked out in woodand bronze not unlike a Portugueseinn. For the past 16 years, Litoral hasbeen taking authentic Macanesecuisine and serving it up to localsjostling for space with tourists inthe-know.Classic favourites includeminchi, minced meat with friedpotato and egg; duck rice, hearty meatand vegetable stew; and Galinha àPortuguesa, pieces of chicken andpotato cooked in a mild coconut curry.Dinner is typically served latein Asia, but you can sustain yourselfwith the plethora of street snacksavailable. I have been working on THAI’s A380 programme since 2005, whenit was a clean sheet of paper. To finally see the real-life aircraft coming in to ourfleet very soon is indescribable. The A380 is also one of the last aircraft types I willmanage before my retirement, which makes it even more emotional for me.What has been the hardest part of the process so far?There are just so many things to consider. Take the interior, where I have to considerthe requirements of my colleagues in our design, onboard product and inflightservice departments, as well as cabin safety, engineering and maintenance. On topof that, there are certifications, airworthiness, safety and security rules that must bestrictly adhered to. With all these requirements, there are some compromises thatmust be made but the priority is always the well-being and safety of our passengers.Answering all of these requirements with the least amount of compromise withinthe available time frame is the biggest challenge.What do you think passengers will notice most about the new cabin?The new cabin will offer something for everyone, regardless of the class you arein. In Royal First Class, the lavatory has a changing room, as well as a small areawhere up to four passengers can relax together, or hold a meeting or work. For RoyalSilk passengers, every seat offers direct access to the aisle and converts into a fullyflat bed. In Economy, the cabin is lively and vibrant with seat covers that appear tochange colour, depending on the angle you look. In this role, I liaise withTHAI’s ground handling, cargo, corporate planning and public relations departments.The ultimate goal is to bring these big birds into the fleet in a smooth and seamlessmanner together with the highest safety standards. My final task is to fly the very firstA380 from Toulouse, France to Thailand – but I don’t think my responsibility will endthere, as I will continue to work on their integration into the THAI family.What has been the most exciting part of the process so far?I’d rather say challenging than exciting. To bring any new aircraft into a fleet is alwaysa challenging assignment. Due to its size and capacity, the A380 requires full attentionin every detail. Its new technologies demand new ways of working and even new waysof thinking. And most importantly, all staff must be well trained to welcome the “queenof the sky”. Personally, I’m really looking forward to flying the real A380… after sevenyears of waiting!What do you think the pilots will notice most about the A380?The first group of THAI pilots who will fly the A380 already fly our other Airbus aircraft.So I’m sure they will feel at home with the A380. In twoyears, THAI will receive delivery of four787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, with two moredelivered the following year and two B787-9aircraft delivered in 2017, putting the totalnumber of Boeing 787 aircraft in THAI’s fleetat eight.“Our passengers of the THAI 787aircraft will enjoy the experience of ourlegendary onboard services, relax in newlydesigned interiors and be entertained withstate-of-the-art inflight products,” said Mr.Amranand. “Other perks are the aircraft’sphysical attributes such as higher humidityduring flight, lower cabin pressure, largerand dimmable windows, and bigger overheadstorage space, plus other features. CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYTHAI Brings Love to the SouthTHAI staff recentlyvolunteered their timein the Narathiwatprovince, bringingwith them medicalsupplies, food andwater for civiliansand borderpatrol soldiersTwelve members of THAI staff, led by Ms. KakanangAtichati, manager of THAI’s Social ResponsibilityDepartment, recently volunteered in Narathiwat inSouthern Thailand to help boost morale of the people there.The group was accompanied by Sub-lieutenant PrateepKarnkao and greeted by members of the Royal Thai MarineCorps who led them to the Chulabhorn military camp.Here the volunteers distributed medical supplies, sportsequipment, food and water donated by THAI staff, andhanded out doughnuts to the border patrol soldiers andlocals in the community to sweeten the visit. They werealso given a briefing about the Southern situation whereresidents often face a number of difficulties on a daily basis.Though the volunteers initially believed their trip’s purposewas to boost morale through the distribution of donatedsupplies, they soon learned there was much more that couldbe done to help the people and soldiers.The soldiers have a campaign called “Patrol localcommunities on foot”, which has contributed greatly to thepeople’s well-being and has allowed solders to foster closerties with the more than 250,000 locals. Their communitywork includes repairing homes, painting jobs, repairingelectrical supplies, repairing motorcycles – some even helpedout a local man with his haircut! No matter how exhausted thesoldiers are, these brave men are willing to make the sacrificefor the sake of everyone’s well-being.“This could be the place where it all begins,” said thecommander of the Royal Thai Marine Corps. “What’s importantis that we all must work together to create harmony – the soldiers,the volunteer doctors and, most importantly, the people.” Eventhough this trip was dotted with obstacles, the volunteers weredetermined to fulfil their mission and ensure that the suppliesreached the hands of the locals. It’s the least they could do forthose who have suffered on behalf of the nation.82

่พนักงานการบินไทยฯบริจาคสิ่งของให้แก่ทหารและพลเรือนในจังหวัดนราธิวาสการบินไทย “ปันรักและความห่วงใย” สู่ชุมชนภาคใต้นราธิวาส ... หนึ่งในสามจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้มีข่าวการก่อการร้ายขึ้นหน้าหนึ่งของหนังสือพิมพ์แถบทุกฉบับอย่างต่อเนื่อง จากเคยเป็นจังหวัดที่คราครำาไปด้วยนักท่องเที่ยวพนักงานจิตอาสาของการบินไทยจากสังกัดต่างๆ จำานวน 12 คนโดยมี คุณคคนางค์ อติชาติ ผู้จัดการกองกิจกรรมองค์กรและสังคมเป็นผู้นำาคณะฯ เดินทางถึงจังหวัดนราธิวาสโดยเครื่องบิน F-27ของกองทัพเรือ ซึ่งมี เรือตรี ประทีป ก้านขาว และนักบิน นำาคณะฯทะยานสู่น่านฟ้าไปยังจังหวัดนราธิวาสทันทีที่ล้อเครื่องบินสัมผัสพื้น เหล่าทหารนาวิกโยธินกว่า 20 นายพร้อมอาวุธครบมือ นำาโดยนาวาโท กิตติภูมิ สืบศาสนา ตรงมารับคณะฯเพื่อไม่ให้เสียเวลา ผู้พันฯ จึงนำาคณะฯ มุ่งตรงไปยังค่ายจุฬาภรณ์กรมทหารราบที่ 3 กองพลนาวิกโยธินในทันทีท่ามกลางแสงแดดร้อนคณะจิตอาสาการบินไทยและนาวิกโยธิน ได้พร้อมกันที่บริเวณหน้าอาคารบัญชาการเพื่อส่งมอบยาเวชภัณฑ์ อุปกรณ์กีฬา เครื่องใช้ไฟฟ้าเครื่องอุปโภคบริโภค ที่พนักงานการบินไทยทั้งบริษัทฯ ได้นำามาสมทบกันคนละเล็กคนละน้อย กระทั่งได้จำานวนหนึ่งซึ่งมากพอที่จะนำาไปมอบให้ชุมชนภาคใต้ ในวันนั้นคณะฯ ยังหอบหิ้วโดนัทหลากหลายชนิดกว่าพันชิ้นจาก ดันกิ้น โดนัท ติดไม้ติดมือไป หวังจะช่วยเพิ่มพลังให้กับเหล่าทหารรักษาดินแดนและชาวบ้านในชุมชนใกล้เคียงแม้ของที่นำาไปมอบมีจำานวนมากมายในความรู้สึกของผู้ให้ แต่เมื่อได้เข้าฟังบรรยายสรุปสถานการณ์ความไม่สงบและการให้ความช่วยเหลือของทหารในเขตจังหวัดนราธิวาสจากผู้การฯ แล้ว ทำาให้คณะฯต่างตระหนักได้ว่า ของที่นำาไปนั้นยังน้อยนักเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับความต้องการของทหารแต่ละครั้งที่ลงพื้นที่มอบความอุ่นใจให้ประชาชนและยิ่งเทียบไม่ได้กับสิ่งที่ชาวบ้านต้องสูญเสียไปเมื่อเกิดเหตุการณ์ความไม่สงบในแต่ละครั้งการปฏิบัติงานในพื้นที่เสี่ยงภัยอาจจะเป็นเรื่องที่อันตรายน้อยกว่าที่เป็นอยู่ หากผู้การฯ ไม่ได้ยึดหลัก “เดินเท้าเข้าชุมชน” เพื่อพูดคุยเสริมสร้างความเข้าใจกับพี่น้องกว่า 250,000 คน ด้วยการนำาทีมคณะทหารฯ เข้าช่วยเหลือชุมชนในด้านต่างๆ ทั้งช่วยซ่อมแซมทาสีบ้านซ่อมอุปกรณ์เครื่องใช้ไฟฟ้า รถมอเตอร์ไซค์ บ้างสวมบทบาทเป็นช่างตัดผม ทั้งยังเข้าไปช่วยสร้างงานแนะนำาการสร้างอาชีพให้กลุ่มแม่บ้านในชุมชน หรือแม้กระทั่งคอยมอบความบันเทิงและคิดสรรกิจกรรมสันทนาการเพื่อเชื่อมความสัมพันธ์กับชาวบ้านในชุมชน พร้อมจัดหน่วยแพทย์เคลื่อนที่เพื่อให้การพยาบาลรักษาสุขภาพของชาวบ้านด้วยทุกครั้งแม้ต้องแลกกับหยาดเหงื่อ แรงกายและการตกเป็นเป้าของการจู่โจมทุกครั้ง แต่รั้วของชาติทั้งหลายก็ไม่ย่อท้อ ยังคงใช้หัวใจสานต่อกิจกรรมเพื่อสร้างความเชื่อมั่นให้เกิดขึ้นในหมู่ชาวไทย สร้างความเข้มแข็งในระดับหมู่บ้าน และสร้างสภาพแวดล้อมให้เอื้อต่อการพัฒนาให้เกิดความสงบขึ้นในอนาคต“...ถ้าความสงบสุขในภาคใต้เกิดขึ้นจะต้องเริ่มจากที่นี่ซึ่งจะสำาเร็จได้จากความร่วมมือของทหารผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชา หมออาสาและที่สำาคัญที่สุดคือประชาชน...” ผู้การฯ กล่าวอย่างหนักแน่นแม้การเดินทางในครั้งนี้ ต้องพบกับอุปสรรคที่ท้าทายความตั้งใจอยู่เป็นระยะๆ ตั้งแต่ยังไม่ก้าวย่างออกเดินทาง แต่คณะจิตอาสาก็ไม่ได้ละทิ้งความมุ่งมั่น พยายามประสานงานกับหน่วยงานทั้งกองทัพเรือและกองทัพอากาศ เพื่อหาหนทางนำาข้าวของจากนำาใจของชาวการบินไทยที่้จัดเตรียมไว้ไปมอบให้ถึงมือของชุมชนภาคใต้ โดยหวังว่าของจำานวนนั้นจะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่ช่วยเติมเต็มและบรรเทาความขาดแคลนในดินแดนที่ปรากฏร่องรอยของการต่อสู้และความขัดแย้งได้บ้างจากวันเป็นเดือน จากเดือนเป็นปีและหลายปี ที่รั้วของชาติต้องปฏิบัติหน้าที่ผลัดเปลี่ยนกันเอาชีวิตเข้าเสี่ยงเพื่อปกป้องคนไทยแทนประชาชนทั้งชาติ แต่น้อยคนนักที่จะนึกถึงคนภาคใต้ ว่าเป็นผู้เสียสละที่ยิ่งใหญ่ของแผ่นดิน...83
