Background of the <strong>ANZ</strong> <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Bank<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative• Launched <strong>in</strong> October 2004: 350k – 400k people with no accessto bank<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Fiji</strong>• UNDP & <strong>ANZ</strong> competency based partnership with UNDPprovid<strong>in</strong>g a f<strong>in</strong>ancial literacy program until 2005• A mobile bank<strong>in</strong>g service with 6 mobile bank<strong>in</strong>g units based <strong>in</strong>6 of our 16 Branch network• Face to face relationship with over 300 communities <strong>and</strong> 200schools each month• F<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>clusion through basic f<strong>in</strong>ancial literacy <strong>and</strong> basicbank<strong>in</strong>g services4

Impact of <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Bank<strong>in</strong>g</strong> services <strong>in</strong> <strong>Fiji</strong>• Increase <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ancial Capability for rural communities- Sav<strong>in</strong>gs & Payment agent – eg Remittances & Social Welfare- 73,000 Deposit accounts with a deposit base of FJD11m- 90% of our accounts are opened by people without any exist<strong>in</strong>g Bank a/c• <strong>Rural</strong> communities have access to bank<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> credit- Simple & affordable sav<strong>in</strong>gs products conveniently accessible to ruralcommunities- F<strong>in</strong>ancial literacy promoted both at rural schools <strong>and</strong> communities• Improvement of livelihood- People with access to bank<strong>in</strong>g services <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial education are more likelyto have a cash surplus to re-<strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> their farm or bus<strong>in</strong>ess- Positive relationship between a household’s wellbe<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> its ability tomanage spend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> re-<strong>in</strong>vest the surplus.- Average deposit growth from $3.97 <strong>in</strong> 2006 to $157.89 <strong>in</strong> 20106

Learn<strong>in</strong>g's from the <strong>Fiji</strong> experience• Initial experience with Micro-loan- Loans granted to first time borrowers with no lend<strong>in</strong>g & sav<strong>in</strong>gshistory/background - F<strong>in</strong>ancial Literacy has a positive impact- Support services is crucial• Limitations of current model- Limited Distribution channels – Mobile money, phone bank<strong>in</strong>g &EFTPOS can provide eng<strong>in</strong>es for regeneration- Operat<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> a commercial bank structure is too costly <strong>and</strong>too bureaucratic - Potential to review for a more efficient model8
