5. Q. Who is qualified to work with a young child with ASD?A. There is no specific credential or discipline that qualifies an individual to workwith a child with ASD. We find that the complexity of behaviors and needs forchildren with ASD often require a team of individuals who work with the family.Team members could include any or all of the following: a special educator orearly childhood educator, an early intervention assistant or associate, aspeech/language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a psychologist or a socialworker. It is important that the members of the team have adequate training andexperience in working with children with ASD. While the system does not requireit, providers have Board Certified Behavior Analysts of other experienced staff aspart of their program to deal with all the components of the IFSP. If they do nothave staff experienced in a specific strategy or technique, then they may hire aconsultant of their choice to provide technical assistance and training to the staffand family.6. Q. Will the Birth to Three System provide a discrete trial instruction program for mychild?A. Yes. Discrete trial instruction is a technique used within a framework of appliedbehavioral analysis. Your Birth to Three provider will assist you with implementingdiscrete trial instruction if it is determined to be an effective technique based onyour child’s needs and is identified on the IFSP. This will typically be onecomponent of the IFSP that also includes opportunities for generalization of skillsto other settings and social interaction with others.7. Q. My child is not getting enough hours of service because we have a team meetingevery month. Is there any way to stop having team meetings so he can get moreservices?A. The exact pattern of service delivery is agreed upon by your family and yourservice coordinator is part of the IFSP process. The IFSP focuses on what isimportant to you as your child develops. Framing this conversation in terms of thehours Birth to Three staff are working with your child may stand in the way offiguring out the best ways Birth to Three and your family can work together to meetthe outcomes that are important to you. The point is not to receive hours ofservices but to make progress toward the outcomes you have identified. Yourfamily and Birth to Three need to strike a balance, using meeting time to makesure everybody is working together and still maintaining an intensity of servicesthat works well for your child and family.8. Q. Will the Birth to Three System pay for an alternative therapy such as auditorytraining, vision therapy or cranial sacral therapy for my child?A. No. The Birth to Three System will assist families with finding information andresources on alternative or complementary treatments. Often these treatmentsare considered medical intervention, which are not covered by our System. TheSystem will not provide any treatment that has not been proven effective based onresearch studies.CT Birth to Three System • Service Guideline #1 • Revised July, 2002 and January, 200829
