10 th International Symposium on Fossil Cnidaria and Porifera. <strong>Excursion</strong> B2: Field Guidemesocycles. They are most typically developed in theKaugatuma Stage where four of such cyclithes (Lowerand Upper Äigu beds, Lower and Upper Lõo beds)have been distinguished. A clear facies zonation wascharacteristic of the moments of the formation of crinoidalgrainstones in the shoal belt (Fig. 13), whileduring the rest of time with intensive influx of clayeycomponent, the lateral differentiation of facies wasmuch poorer. The infilling stage began with a brief transgressiveevent during the Kuressaare Age. This Late Siluriantransgression reached its maximum at the beginningof the Pridoli (early Kaugatuma time). The transitionalfacies belt with deposition of calcareous-argillaceousmuds (Šilalė beds of the Minija Formation) was verywide and extended from southwestern Latvia to northwesternPoland. In onshore direction it was graduallyfollowed by open shelf biomicritic marls, coarsegrainedcrinoidal gravel and sand of the shoal belt andlagoonal dolomitic muds. The latter have preservedonly in the Lithuanian part of the basin. During thelate Kaugatuma and Ohesaare times, the general faciespattern remained the same but all facies belts migratedgradually southwestwards.By the beginning of the Devonian (Tilžė Age),only a remnant lagoon-like body of water was preservedin northern Kurzeme and south-western Lithuania. It was characterized by a clastic-dominatednear-shore belt and argillaceous-dolomitic muds inits offshore part.Favosites pseudoforbesiSokolov, 1952, from Katri cliff,Saaremaa Island(<strong>Excursion</strong> Stop 18)22
