The Kingwas also provided with information regarding thehistory of KOC, oil and gas fields in <strong>Kuwait</strong>, aswell as production, refining, storage and exportof oil and gas.HM King Letsie III, as well as the Queen, signedthe guest book at the Display Center andexpressed their pleasure with the visit.The delegation then visited Gathering Center 19,followed by a visit to the Ahmadi Guest House,where they were received by KOC C&MD SamiAl-Rushaid, who presented a memorial gift to HisMajesty King Letsie III. KOC Takes Part in MEOS 2013Q&HSE Team submits paperEnvironment Engineer Hamad Al-Mebayedh and Safety Engineer Bader Al-Failakawi, HSE (Technical Services) Team, recently delivered a technicalresearch paper titled: “<strong>Oil</strong> Recovery Options for Waste Water TreatmentFacilities” during the Society of Petroleum Engineering’s 18th Middle East<strong>Oil</strong> & Gas show and Conference (MEOS) that was held recently in Manama,Bahrain.The ultimate goal of the technical paper is to develop an environmentallyand economically sound technology to manage and recover oil from wastewater treatment facilities. The paper discusses the up-to-date methodologyto analyze the behavior of oil in water, particularly at waste water facilities in<strong>Kuwait</strong>, and defines the oil recovery options.The presentation was warmly welcomed by specialists from SPE, whoshowed interest in sharing the best practices learned from the KOC technicalresearch paper.Junior Staff Development ProgramHeld by T&CD GroupThe Training & Career Development Group recently conducted their secondJunior Staff Development event. The event marked the conclusion of a fullyear program that involved junior staff, group consultants, specialists andsenior staff. The aim of this initiative is to assign junior staff to consultants,specialists and senior staff to participate in special projects, tasks andassignments.The program is designed to help participants in realizing their true potentialby improving their confidence, challenging themselves to achieve newgoals, exploring existing projects and gaining valuable insight on projectmanagement skills.A total of 23 employees have participated in this year’s event. The programhas also expanded to involve participants and consultants from otherGroups.3


KOC Celebrates Earth HourLights switched off across <strong>Company</strong>KOC celebrated Earth Hour recently with a symbolic event that wasorganized in front of the <strong>Company</strong>’s Main Office in Ahmadi. A number ofsenior officials, employees and volunteers were in attendance during theevent.While candles were lit for an hour on the occasion, Ahmadi Services GroupManager Ismael Al-Khawari said that the KOC initiative was intended todeliver a message about <strong>Kuwait</strong>’s participation with countries aroundthe world in order to help contribute in spreading the message about theimportance of conserving energy. Turning off lights throughout variouslocations is one way of spreading that information.Lights were turned off throughout KOC buildings, such as the GeneralManagement, Main Office, Ahmadi Governorate’s premises and otherbuildings throughout Ahmadi, in addition to decorative lights along streets,which were also turned off.Al-Khawari stressed the importance of <strong>Kuwait</strong> adopting positive behaviorswhile avoiding any activities that can harm the environment.KOC celebration of Earth Hour coincided with <strong>Kuwait</strong> activities on theoccasion of the Earth Day, organized at the Jaber Al-Ahmad InternationalStadium, under the patronage of the Minister of Information and Ministerof State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Al-Homoud. A group of young<strong>Kuwait</strong>i volunteers, in cooperation with the Global Warming Team of theVoluntary Work Center, put on the event under the theme of “The WorldChallenge…to Save the Planet.”5


WK Operations Conduct Presentation on Desert HabitatKOC Efforts to Expand Environmental AwarenessIn line with KOC’s commitment to protect the environment against pollutionand raise environmental awareness within the society, the Operations Group(WK) recently conducted an awareness presentation at the Umm Al-QuraElementary School for Girls in Rumaithiya. The presentation touched onthe topic of the desert environment and the importance of its preservation.Conducted by Senior Engineer Nasser Al-Hajri, the presentation wasaccompanied by a short video presentation about the KOC initiative toestablish Al-Abdaliya Reserve and its phases of development.A group of school students participated in the activity by painting pictures ofthe reserve with shrubs being planted throughout it, as a contribution fromtheir part in preserving the environment.The event’s agenda also comprised a presentation about Home Safetywhich was conducted by the Snr. Safety Engineer Ali Al-Mirza.To conclude the event, Ag. TL OTS (WK) Mahmoud Al-Yacoubpresented Badriya Abdullah of the Um Al-Qura Elementary School with acommemorative shield and thanked her for the hospitality accorded to KOCand her contribution to spreading environmental awareness.Awareness Workshop on EPC Model ContractsOrganized By Commercial Support GroupThe Commercial Support Group recently organized a Contractual AwarenessWorkshop at the Hubara Center on Variations, Claims, Commodities andCurrency Fluctuations for Edification, Procurement & Construction (EPC)of Model Contracts.The aforementioned four topics are key issues in the successfuladministration of Contracts for KOC’s major capital projects. The relatedprovisions have been subject to extensive improvements in recent years.The objective of this workshop was to raise levels of contractual andcommercial awareness and improve competence within key user groupsin relation to a number of important aspects of the <strong>Company</strong>’s adoptionof model contracts. Key users were given a detailed overview of theprovisions, followed by practical examples demonstrating how theseprovisions are applied. The ultimate intention of such action was to providekey users with the knowledge required to effectively administer KOC’s hostof model contracts as efficiently as possible and thereby improving project6performance in terms of quality, cost and schedule.The speakers at the workshop were: TPL Senior Contracts Specialist (IMohamed Sadek, Attorney at Law (M/s SNR Denton) Karl Hopkins, M/sAmec Consultant Merv Mackay and M/s Worley Parsons Consultant GeoffSatchwell.The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to optimize theunderstanding of key users on those administrative aspects of the<strong>Company</strong>’s suite of model contracts that have potential for significant impacton the overall performance of the <strong>Company</strong>’s major capital projects.Senior Contracts Specialist Mohamed Sadek said that the AwarenessSession was extremely well attended by 58 people from KOC MajorProjects Groups, Contracts Teams, the Legal Affairs Group and threeProject Management Consultants and that it included a lively and engagingQ&A session.


Ahmadi Hospital Organizes Annual Blood Donation <strong>Campaign</strong>Ahmadi Hospital recently organized its annual Blood Donation <strong>Campaign</strong>amid a huge response from KOC staff, patients and those entitled toreceive medical care at the Hospital, which includes citizens andexpatriates working in the oil sector.The Hospital’s Acting Director, Dr. Khaled Al-Suweilem, accompaniedby TL and Head of Ahmadi Hospital Laboratories Shaker Al-Mutawa,commended the efforts of the medical staff in facilitating and organizingthe blood donation campaign.Dr. Al-Suweilem said that blood donation was a noble gesture by aperson who sacrifices his blood in order to help an unknown individualwho badly needs it to save his life. This, he said, gives added value tothe campaign and the selfless act of donating blood.He maintained that the donated blood is transferred by Ahmadi Hospitalto the <strong>Kuwait</strong> Central Blood Bank to cover the demands of hospitals,based on a long history of cooperation between both parties.It is worth mentioning that Ahmadi Hospital was a pioneer in playingsuch a humanitarian role and is ranked among the 10 first partners ofthe <strong>Kuwait</strong> Central Blood Bank which also responds to the requests ofAhmadi Hospital in emergency cases.7
