BY KHALID SUMAITI, DEPUTY MANAGER DIRECTOR, EXPLORATION & PRODUCTIONLeveraging State-of-the-ArtSolutions to Optimize PerformanceMr. Khalid Sumaiti, Deputy Manager Director of E&P at KOC, responds to thegrowing need for a modern technology solution to align the Jurassic asset’sday-to-day gas production with KOC’s corporate objective to meet Kuwait’selectricity demands. The KwIDF Jurassic solution brings to the asset specifically, and KOC as a whole, the promise of increased performance and productioncapabilities through the use of advanced digital technology that automates andintegrates the flow of information from the well head to the office.Visualizing information in context, adaptable to various usage scenarios.Collaborative decision-makingbased on real-time dataAccording to Khalid Sumaiti, “The cycle time to arriveat production-related decisions, as well as the qualityof those decisions, will be improved with the newKwIDF Jurassic technology tools quickly appearingon the KOC horizon.” He looks forward to providingusers with continuous surveillance data aboutongoing field activity, along with easy access to andretrieval of relevant historical data⎯all in one placeat the time of need. This will enable faster, higherqualitydecisions to be made in support of optimaldaily operations as well as accurate forecasting.Mr. Sumaiti fully supports the opening of the newCollaboration Center, where technical meetingscan effectively take place in a high-performancecomputing environment that facilitates collaborative, proactive decision-making while viewing real-timedata via state-of-the-art 3D E&P software projectedonto high-resolution, wall-sized screens…theultimate visualization facility! An answer to the assets’technology needsLooking back to the KwIDF Jurassic project’sinception, Mr. Sumaiti recalls the unique challengesof condensate gas as the main drivers that sparkedhis interest in a digital oil field solution. While hesees the importance of gaining more knowledgeabout Kuwait’s oil and gas production across allassets and fields, he understands the analytical valueof being able to drill down to individual well data, which he likens to “seeing the forest and the trees.”Mr. Sumaiti embraces a solution that will help KOC’sengineers better monitor production data, improveinstrumentation and data delivery, and diagnose andpredict future asset performance. Diagnostic toolsare only as good as the available data; the morecomprehensive and detailed the data (includinghistorical information), the better the predictions.Indeed, KwIDF Jurassic represents an answerto much needed 21st century data managementand information gathering techniques with a focuson enhancing collaboration, reaching aggressiveproduction targets, and maintaining operationalsafety. As Mr. Sumaiti claims, “KOC safety standardswill surely improve as the more sophisticatedsurveillance instrumentation is widely implemented, because engineers can use such tools to easilyidentify, analyze, and successfully prevent potentialproblems before they worsen.”New efficiencies to benefitKOC and KuwaitIn Mr. Sumaiti’s mind, the automation thatepitomizes a digital oil field is truly a matter ofbecoming more efficient through simplification⎯from a unified infrastructure to streamlinedworkflows and integrated systems. He likes to quotethe sentiments expressed by Dr. Kioichi Kawana, renowned Zen artist, designer, and architect:“Simplicity means the achievement of maximumeffect with minimum means.”By the end of this project, KOC will actually havea workforce that does more with less! And engineerswill no longer have to waste their valuable timeon data preparation, freeing them up to apply theirexpertise to high value, analytic tasks. The ultimatebenefit of the solution will be fulfilling the nation’sgrowing energy needs much faster than waspreviously possible. n“ The cycle time to arrive atproduction-related decisions,as well as the quality of thosedecisions, will be improvedwith the new KwIDF Jurassictechnology tools quickly appearingon the KOC horizon.”PAGE 4 PAGE 5

BY MENAHI AL-ANZI, MANAGER, GAS DEVELOPMENT GROUPBY DR. ADEL AL-ABBASSI, MANAGER RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY, MANAGER KWIDF JURASSIC PROJECTJurassic Gas—Rising to the Challenge…Safely!KwIDF Jurassic Project—Intelligent Decisions for KuwaitMr. Menahi Al-Anzi, Manager of KOC’s Gas DevelopmentGroup, tells us that his Jurassic team is ready to take fulladvantage of the benefits of the KwIDF Jurassic solution. The creation of an immersive, collaborative environmentwhereby information is turned to awareness leading toeffective action will quickly help optimize field operationsand most importantly, ensure elevated safety standards. The Jurassic Gas asset presents several uniquechallenges both in terms of data acquisition andsafety (2-10% H 2S and 1-3% CO 2environment).To overcome these hurdles, the asset team hasevolved quickly since its inception in 2007,leveraging a combination of engineering expertiseand technology to strive to meet production targetsin support of supplying Kuwait’s electricity demands.According to Mr. Al-Anzi, “KwIDF Jurassic is thenext step in this evolution…employing best-in-classtechnology to acquire reliable and timely productioninformation, developing the level of assetawareness required to optimally capitalize onour engineers’ potential.”Evolving work practices—Adapting to the changeMr. Al-Anzi recognizes the need for new workprocesses as well as training, so that asset teammembers can realize the full benefits of the KwIDFJurassic solution. He explained, “Managing thechange to daily processes and procedures is keyto ensuring that asset awareness can be effectivelyturned into action in the field. Following systemsimplementation, various knowledge transferactivities are planned including tiered training, capability development, and awareness programsled by designated solution champions.”What’s different? This project provides data in context, together withhistory tracking, enabling proper issue diagnosis andthe ability to gain valuable lessons from projectsand decisions⎯as they occur. “KwIDF Jurassicempowers users, providing them with access to asingle version of the truth through an integratedsystem that is cross platform and cross discipline,”described Mr. Al-Anzi.“True collaboration cantake place across domainsand between teams, with each user able tocontribute and share theiranalysis in a consistent, standardized way.”Overall, he believes that“faster project turnaroundwill be possible, whilestill delivering quality services and meeting KPIexpectations. What used to take months will bereduced to a fraction of that time.”What’s possible?Mr. Al-Anzi is excited about the full implicationsof KwIDF Jurassic: “The transition from focusingon what is known about a well to what should bedone with that well is a significant improvement.Having the right tools and additional time for dataanalysis will naturally lead to maximizing production, improving safety, increasing reliability, and moreconfidently planning new projects.” The digital oilfield is also about proactive engagement when itcomes to safety…anticipating problems and takingtimely preventive measures saves lives. Mr. Al-Anzistated, “The quality of life in the field will certainlyimprove despite the hazards. It is an exciting time forall KOC employees to join together and ensure thecompany’s and nation’s success.” nDr. Adel Al-Abbassi, Manager of Research and Technology atKOC, manages the very high-profile Kuwait Integrated DigitalField (KwIDF) Jurassic project. This effort is viewed globallyas the leading project in Oil and Gas “smart” fields, an importantgoal of which is having all asset teams work together inharmony. The state-of-the-art Collaboration Center will combinethe body and soul of the company, as people make a dailydifference in critical decision-making. The integration of moderninfrastructure, software, and engineers will literally speed up theclock in bringing data and solutions to the field. What the project meansWhen asked what KwIDF Jurassic means toDr. Al-Abbassi and KOC, he replied, “Initiating anintegrated digital field within Kuwait will havemany impacts⎯ from streamlining workflows, totraining people, to the overall objectives of KOC andof Kuwait, and ultimately how we will work withdifferent partners to benefit this effort.” The projectis not just about applying the latest technology, buttaking stock of current workflows and seeing wherethey can be improved. According to Dr. Al-Abbassi,“People and collaboration are key factors to ensurethe project’s successful outcome.”Future vision: KOC and KuwaitKOC has contracted industry experts to work withasset teams, analyzing and determining what needsto be achieved and how best to do it. This analysisgoes up to top-level management, where corporateobjectives, focus, and decisions will impact thefuture vision of Kuwait. By 2020, KOC intends tobecome a fully integrated digital asset company,as well as a leading national Exploration, Production, and operation entity. Dr. Al-Abbassi stated, “TheKwIDF Jurassic project is an answer to this initiative, along with our over-arching goals.” These goals are:■■Transform KOC into a “dynamic” E&Pand operation company.■ ■ Develop the country’s hydrocarbon resources■■and infrastructure.Manage the resources for economic prosperity.■ ■ Keep the environment safe and healthy.Profitability impactsnational interestDr. Al-Abbassi firmly believesthat, “Profitability of KOCimpacts Kuwait, whetherinvesting in the country’sgrowth or saving money. As anOil and Gas producer, Kuwaithas a duty to supply energy to the world and anobligation to properly and effectively manage itslimited resources in the most optimal way forsustaining the country and global consumption.”He sees access to real-time data as an enabler ofproactive decision-making, using the analogy ofdriving a fast car; whereby data is currently seen inthe rear-view mirror versus with KwIDF Jurassic, itwill be viewed in front of the car as data becomeslive. “This approach,” according to Dr. Al-Abbassi,“allows issues, such as the challenge of energyshortages, to be identified and resolved beforebecoming big problems.”Continued on page 8PAGE 6 PAGE 7

“ As an Oil and Gas producer, Kuwait has a duty tosupply energy to the world and an obligation toproperly and effectively manage its limited resourcesin the most optimal way for sustaining the countryand for global energy consumption.”BY AHMAD AL-JASMI, RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY, SURFACE TEAM LEAD AND KWIDF PROGRAM MANAGERImplementing the Future…TodayMr. Ahmad Al-Jasmi, KOC’s R&T Surface Team Lead andKwIDF Program Manager, knows perhaps better than anyonethat the Jurassic integrated digital field will bring tremendouschange for the company and its employees. He has beencharged with implementing the complete solution, includingall technology components for the new digital infrastructure, fulfilling the strategic corporate vision set forth by KOCChairman, Mr. Sami Fahed Al Rushaid.Working Together: Menahi Al-Anzi, Manager Gas Development Group (left) discussing KwIDF Jurassic strategy withDr. Adel Al-Abbassi, Manager R&T (right).Continued from page 7The right information and training“Streamlined workflows help users find the rightinformation at the right time to make the rightdecisions throughout the company,” Dr. Al-Abbassiproudly said. This enables KOC to confidentlyplan a strategic direction for operations and fullyunderstand the impact of decisions. With dynamicsystems, people can achieve more by doing less.Teams need to be searching for information tocreate solutions and make better decisions, takingadvantage of the new efficient workflows andproductivity capabilities being made available tothem. Dr. Abassi assured us, “Since the processtakes people, as well as technology, training willbe delivered to the individuals who need it, whenthey need it.”Paradigm shift—the next levelof workingAccording to Dr. Al-Abbassi, “Working with topproviders for technical and workflow solutions, not just as vendors but as strategic partners, KOCcan define the best solutions to help achieve ourgoals.” Without a traditional tender process forKwIDF Jurassic where the cheapest bid wins, butone where multiple companies work on similarsolutions in different assets, KOC can fully evaluateeach part of the solution. Dr. Al-Abbassi noted, “Thisalso encourages the companies’ creativity to defineleading and lasting solutions and workflows for theteams, taking KOC to the next level of working.”Schlumberger, Halliburton, and Weatherford areengaged in three assets to provide a digital oilfieldsolution—from the wellhead to the desktop—whichincludes multiple layers of workflows, collaboration, and productivity tools. Dr. Al-Abbassi believesthat, “This will enable KOC to work in a solutionsenvironment to ultimately increase and maximizefuture production as part of the KwIDF Jurassicinitiative.” He maintained, “This paradigm shift is ahuge undertaking and will take time to achieve. But,the value of the outcome for the overall objectivemakes it a worthwhile venture.” nParadigm shift for engineers—more time to focus on analysis workWhen designing the digital field infrastructure, integrating new hardware and software technology,Mr. Al-Jasmi and the Schlumberger project teamwere driven by practical end-user requirementsto access information quickly and easily, shiftingfrom data handling to high value analysis. He said,“The new systems needed to seamlessly deliverand store information in support of individualsperforming analysis, making decisions, andforecasting production based on data they can trust. This necessitated taking stock of how engineerswere working and what had to change system-wiseto provide reliable, readily available productioninformation at the point of need.”Automating routine tasks anddata manipulationWorking with Schlumberger, Mr. Al-Jasmitranslated users’ requirements first and foremostinto “a need for automated data processing andmanipulation; with data not simply delivered, butalso prepared for use behind the scenes (minimizinghuman intervention).” This automation effortinvolved the provision of end-to-end data flow frominstrumentation to analysis, built-in quality cleansingand conditioning, date and time tagging, delivery toand sharing with operational processes, integrationwith surveillance and other engineering tools, aswell as on-screen display in the appropriate contextand format. “A tall order,” Mr. Al-Jasmi admitted,“but doable with today’s technology!”IntelligentsolutionsMr. Al-Jasmi becamecommitted to helpingengineers “know whatthey need to know intime to act.” His role wasto execute intelligentsolutions, implementingintelligent systems,to achieve an integrated digital field capable ofmeeting production data requirements of today andtomorrow—an environment where everyone hasaccess to the same data, contributes their analyticcapability, and can verify the history of their workand that of others. According to Mr. Al-Jasmi,“A key asset requirement is the ability to controland forecast well production.” Therefore, intelligentcollaborative workflows were also necessary forlaying a foundation, enabling efficient reservoirmanagement, whereby proactive interventionbecomes the norm, impacting everything fromwell performance to facilities performance, andeven HSE.Converting raw data into knowledgeand awarenessWhile implementing the KwIDF Jurassic solution,Mr. Al-Jasmi realized he was doing more thaninstalling servers and software. He and his R&Tteam were helping convert mere data delivery toin-depth knowledge and awareness, which willcontinue to benefit KOC and Kuwait for many yearsto come. He said, “It was indeed thrilling to be partof an endeavor to move beyond the simple storageof data to the elevation of engineering processes toa higher level.” Mr. Al-Jasmi would like to thank hisentire team for their tireless efforts and dedicationto ensure the KwIDF Jurassic project success—down to the smallest details! nPAGE 8 PAGE 9

With thediscovery of the first non-associated Jurassic gasfield, a concerted national effort was launched tofully optimize the field’s development as fast aspossible. This is the point at which Schlumbergerentered the picture, and the North Kuwait JurassicProject (NKJP) began. Mr. Sajid Qayyum informedus, “To achieve aggressive production targets, the NKJP had to focus on two key requirements:optimization and timelydecision-making.” Theserequirements gave riseto the Kuwait IntegratedDigital Field Jurassic(KwIDF Jurassic) project,of which Mr. Qayyumis Project Manager. Heexplained, “KwIDF is across-domain solutionconsisting of a fullyintegrated infrastructurethat can support bothintelligent workflows andergonomic collaboration.”The long-term projectobjectives are productionoptimization andincreased safety. The unique, intelligent solution“KwIDF Jurassic is unique,” according to Mr.Qayyum. He further explained, “For the firsttime, a digital oilfield solution is achieving goalsbeyond simply automating data acquisition anddelivery via instrumentation. A centralized, sharedknowledge base of high-quality, in-depth, trusteddata communicated companywide in real timewill transform asset awareness to a level ofunderstanding and performance not previouslyachievable with other solutions.”Schlumberger and KOC have come together asstrategic partners to take the digital oil field to newheights in terms of capability and added value.Ms. Lai Chan Chui, Schlumberger KwIDF JurassicProject Manager, said, “To this end, we havedesigned intelligent workflows that incorporatesmart E&P software tools with underlying productionscience concepts to liberate KOC engineers from thetedious task of manual data preparation, allowingthem to focus more time on optimization analytics.”By applying petrotechnical know-how, experience, and scientific principles, KOC and Schlumbergerare ensuring that KwIDF Jurassic is on the forefrontof automation, bringing about the evolution of datato knowledge.Holistic approachThe KwIDF Jurassic project team is taking aholistic approach to design the supporting digitalinfrastructure. Mr. Ahmad Al-Jasmi, R&T SurfaceTeam Lead and KwIDF Jurassic Program Manager, highlighted that “Combining the latest technologieswith KOC’s existing resources makes it possible tobuild a truly integrated network as opposed to a set ofsmart, but isolated points of access.” This integrationfacilitates a collaborative computing environment, which ergonomically ties together the work processesand decision-making of different teams—ProductionSupport, Field Development, and Facility Operations, etc. KwIDF Jurassic essentially takes collaborationto the next level, unifying KOC’s technical resourcesto attain complete cooperation ultimately leadingto work process and data flow optimization.Delivering measurable valueMr. Al-Jasmi described the project’s value as:“The turnkey, end-to-end KwIDF Jurassic solutionthat incorporates all necessary components, frominstrumentation to collaboration. As a result, it canprovide KOC with the ability to proactively identifyand anticipate potential production problems byanalyzing data in the context of operating processes.Additionally, the information visualization frameworkprovides engineers and managers immediate accessto actionable information, allowing them to seewhat they need to see, when they need to see it.”He summed it up by stating, “KwIDF Jurassic willenable continuous asset awareness through animmersive, collaborative user environment.”PAGE 10
