WK Celebrates 30 Million Safe Man Hours<strong>Achievement</strong> Reflects Commitment, ResponsibilityDMD (WK) Captain Ahmad Al-Rasheed, hailed the cooperation andcommitment between the Directorate employees and Contractors, a factthat resulted in a 30 Million safe man hours record in West <strong>Kuwait</strong> fieldsduring the period from 2009 until late August 2012.Al-Rasheed said in an opening speech he delivered on this occasionthat “This achievement was not possible without each party’s eagernessto accomplish its mission in a safe and responsible manner. He furthernoted that this achievement mirrors the emphasis that KOC places onthe safety of employees at worksites, bearing in mind that the humancapital is its main asset, and that the legal and moral obligation makesthe protection of each and every individual imperative.For his part, HSE TL (NK), Ismael Mataqi, highlighted the essential factorsthat directly contributed to the accomplishment of such outstandingoutcome, in spite of the complications and dangers hampering theexecution of operations and projects.Mataqi explained in detail the procedures that were adopted by the HSETeam in WK fields during the above-mentioned period and the resultsthat were obtained, while expressing optimism about the prospect ofmarking a 10 million safe man hours in 2013.Entitled, “Congratulating Employees and Contractors in West <strong>Kuwait</strong>,”the ceremony culminated in the honoring of a number of contractingcompanies working in the Directorate’s fields.The celebration took place at the Hubara Club and was attended by ahuge number of oil sector officials, employees and contractors workingin West <strong>Kuwait</strong>.PMI AGC 14th International ConferenceEvent to be Hosted by Manama Late JanuaryThe Project Management Institute – Arabian Gulf Chapter (PMI-AGC)announced that the upcoming PMI-AGC 14th International Conference willbe held at the Gulf International Convention Center at Gulf Hotel in theKingdom of Bahrain from 28-30 January, 2013, themed “Raising the BarThrough Project Excellence”.PMI AGC <strong>Kuwait</strong> President, Wael H. Al-Jasem, told the “Energy” newsletterthat the event serves as a forum for project management practitioners,engineers, planners, academicians and management to interact, shareexperiences, improve their knowledge and showcase projects and bestpractices.In conjunction with this conference, PMI AGC has lined up eight excitingworkshops. The instructors include prominent PMI regular congressspeakers and seminar trainers to popular local and regional speakers andtrainers.3


Global Warming Awareness <strong>Campaign</strong>Event Organized by HSE (S&EK) TeamThe HSE (S&EK) Team organized an awareness campaign on GlobalWarming.In his opening speech, the Operations Support Manager, Abdullah Al-Awadhi, considered mankind as the first and sole responsible for thedamage being inflicted on the environment.The event included a series of specialized presentations initiated by theManager of the Environment Sciences at the <strong>Kuwait</strong> Institute for ScientificResearch (KISR), Dr. Abdulnabi Al-Ghadban, who delivered a key notespeech, themed, “Global Warming, Issues and Implications.”This was followed by a presentation made by Dr. Saifuddin (from KISR) onthe Effects of Global Warming and Climate Change in the Region and apresentation by KOC’s Acting Team Leader for R&T (SS), Bader Al Matar,entitled, “KOC EOR CO 2Opportunity Plan.”The presentations respectively tackled a number of relevant topics,including the Utilization of Renewable Solar Energy at KOC, the Low-Carbon Transportation Networks Using Co-Polimer Soil Stabilizers andthe Professional Accountability of Companies for Safe Phase-out of OzoneDepleting Substances.The event was accompanied by an exhibition encompassing the displayof products, services and engineering applications related to globalwarming and greenhouse gases reduction and control by local partners andcontractors.On the conclusion of the awareness session, HSE TL (S&EK) Ali Al-Failakawi expressed appreciation and gratitude to the Participants for theirvaluable presentations, the Exhibitioners for their active contribution, andthe participants for their interaction with the program.The event was also attended by the Support Services Group Manager(S&EK), Waleed Al-Shouaib, the Acting HSE Group Manager, AhmadAbbas, a number of TLs and a host of employees within the Directorate.4


Bahrain Hosts 2 nd MEMCEWK Participated With Technical PaperKOC has actively participated in the 2nd Middle East MaintenanceConference & Exhibition recently held in Manama, the capital of theKingdom of Bahrain, under the auspices of the Minister of Finance and theMinister In Charge of <strong>Oil</strong> & Gas Affairs Sheikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Al-Khalifa, themed “A Journey Towards Excellence”.The Conference hosted distinguished representatives and speakers frommajor oil and gas companies in the Gulf and beyond, including <strong>Kuwait</strong> <strong>Oil</strong><strong>Company</strong>, Saudi Aramco, Qatar Petroleum, Sabic, PDO, Adnoc, Bapco.KOC was represented at the Conference by Senior Electrical Engineer,Wael Hussain, and Electrical Engineer, Ashwin Kaushik, both from theExport Maintenance Team.Engineers Hussain and Kaushik jointly presented a technical paper titled,“Maintenance Engineering–Variable Speed Drives: An Engineering Marvel”in which they highlighted the numerous advantages of variable speed drivesboth in terms of technological advancements and significant energy savings.Emphasis was placed on the 11KV, 24 MVA water cooled variable speeddrives installed at KOC’s North Pier Pumping and Metering Station, whichhas yielded many benefits in line with KOC’s 2020 Strategy.FD (S&EK) Organizes Workshop“Planning and Placing Horizontal Wells for Optimal <strong>Oil</strong> Productivity”The Fields Development Group (S&EK) organized a workshop, a secondof its kind, entitled, Planning and Placing Horizontal Wells for Optimal <strong>Oil</strong>Productivity.”On the occasion, the Group Manager, Jamal Al-Humoud, emphasizedthe importance of holding such workshops to keep pace with the latestdevelopments in drilling and production domain.For his part, Senior Geologist, Hussein Bahman, who organized the eventalong with the Manager, stressed that Geo-steering is critical and importantfor drilling and production success.He further noted that complex formation and tougher operating environmentare among the challenges that need to be tackled in the coming period.The workshop was coordinated by Rohit Kotecha,Senior Geologist, with theparticipation and involvement of a number of colleagues within the Group.5


Legal Affairs Group Holds PresentationsLegal Affairs Group has recently held two awareness presentations atthe Guest House involving employees in the Contracts Group, and somemembers of the Legal Group.The first presentation was delivered by Senior Specialist (Legal AffairsGroup), Essam Amer, entitled: “Analysis of the Causes of Legal Claims”.The second lecture was delivered by Senior Legal Adviser of the GroupIbrahim Kulaib.The two presentations are aimed to brief the members of the Group andsome legal practitioners about some tools and methods of dealing withcontracts and legal claims, in light of international law and the <strong>Kuwait</strong>ilaw, as well as regulations adopted in KOC.The event, which seeks to help the trainees to avoid ambiguities orerroneous interpretation of certain terms, was attended by a largenumber of employees who had the chance to get answers to all theirquestions.Gulf Bank’s Final KOC Draw for 2012Raj Prasad Wins Brand New GMC YukonThe Gulf Bank lately announced KOC employee Raj Kishore Prasadas the winner of a brand-new GMC Yukon car in the fourth and finalquarterly KOC Staff Prize Draw for 2012.Prasad expressed gratitude to the Gulf Bank for the genuine efforts andoutstanding services it constantly renders through its branch at KOC’sOffice Complex.The Gulf Bank’s Quarterly Prize Draw is part of the privileges offeredto all KOC staff members who get their salaries transferred through theGulf Bank. School <strong>Campaign</strong> for Eye-Related DiseasesEarly Examination Helps to avoid Serious ComplicationsAs part of its contribution to the community, theAhmedi Hospital’s Ophthalmology Departmentorganized a medical campaign for school studentswithin the Ahmedi Area. The campaign includedexamination of eyesight problems, inabilityto distinguish between colors and checkingfarsightedness and nearsightedness.The campaign covered Umm Emarah School andIbn Majid School for Boys, where two randomsamples were selected including 53 male studentsand 53 female students. Tests showed that manycases need medical treatment and follow up.The hospital’s Social Welfare Officer, Latifa Al-Kandari, who proposed the initiative, said that thehospital intends to launch further campaigns infuture. She added that examining young childrencan help them avoid serious complications of manyeye diseases.
