QUALIFICATIONS INFORMATIONQualification PathwayWe deliver programmes and courses from a foundation level through to certificates, diplomas, degrees and graduate diplomas.This means that in many cases you can start at the level that suits your skills and knowledge. As a student enrolled in this programme, you will be guided from an introductory levelof skills required for tertiary study to a level that will enable you to study independently in an area of your interest.You may study full time at a level best suited to your learning needs, or enrol in flexible part time options, to prepare you for application to further studyin your field of interest. You may wish to take individual courses alongside the programme you are currently enrolled in, to help you gain the study skillsyou need to successfully complete that programme.Qualification LadderThis is a general guide to the entry criteria for different levels of study. Some study programmes may have different criteria, or specificrequirements, depending upon the nature of the programme. Please check the details in the Prospectus programme details and with staff.IF YOU HAVEDegree entry criteria OR mature student with required skills OR relevantdiploma qualification.NCEA Level 2 or 3 OR mature student with required skills OR relevantcertificate qualification.NCEA Level 1 OR mature student with required skills.No formal qualification.YOU COULD STUDYUndergraduate degree.Diploma programmes.Certificate programmes.Foundation programmes.School Certificate, University Entrance, Bursary and NCEA?For people who might be a little confused about NCEA, here is a simplified explanationSchool Certificate replaced by NCEA Level 1Sixth Form Certificate replaced by NCEA Level 2Bursary replaced by NCEA Level 3To pass each level of NCEA a student must gaincredits in a number of subjects at the appropriatelevel, some of which are assessed by formalexamination and some are assessed by teachers.University Entrance is made up of NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 credits.To gain entrance into a polytechnic or university undergraduate degreeprogramme applicants will need as a minimum:Applicants under 20 years:Approved subjects - 42 credits at Level 3 or higher, made up of:• 14 credits in one approved subject• 14 credits in another approved subject• 14 credits from one or two additional domains or approved subjectsLiteracy requirements - 8 credits in English or te reo Ma _ ori at Level 2or higher, made up of:• 4 credits in reading• 4 credits in writingNumeracy requirements - 14 credits in Numeracy at Level 1or higher, made up of:• 14 credits in Mathematics or Statistics and Probability or Pangarauor unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627.From 2014 to be awarded entry you will need:- NCEA Level 3- Three subjects - at Level 3 or above, made up of:- 14 credits each, in three approved subjects- Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:- 5 credits in reading- 5 credits in writing- Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:- achievement standards – specified achievement standardsavailable through a range of subjects, or- unit standards -package of three numeracy unit standards(26623, 26626, 26627 - all three required).Applicants 20 years and over:Either meet one of the above criteria or provide evidence of successin recent tertiary level study. Previous work and life experience maybe taken into account for mature students. If you do not meet any ofthe above criteria you may be directed toward a study course to gainsatisfactory entry qualifications. In all cases you should discuss thespecific entry criteria for any programme with the appropriate staff.6
