1893Population 1921889 Mechanic Arts1889Holladay HallAfter a long, hard battle to obtain a federal grant forthe revolutionary idea of higher education for theworking class, the North Carolina College ofAgriculture and Mechanic Arts (A. and M. College,now NC State University) opened its doors onOctober 3 rd , 1889. Alexander Q. Holladay wasnamed as the first President. The first studentenrolled was Walter J. Matthews in mechanic arts(engineering). Dr. Wallace Carl Riddick Jr. joined thefaculty of the North Carolina College of Agricultureand Mechanic Arts as professor of mechanics andapplied mathematics. The first graduating class atNC State was 1893 with 19 graduates: 14 completedcourse work in mechanics (mechanic arts orengineering) to receive a BE degree (Bachelor ofEngineering).William Clark Styron, Sr. is standing just below the twomen on the top row. He served as secretary-treasurer ofthe Mechanical Society for the spring term, 1910. A futurechancellor of NC State (1934-1953), John W. 1914Population 7021891 Mechanical1891EngineeringMechanical Building & Park ShopsThis building contained drawing rooms, laboratoriesand shops: a machine shop, forge shop, woodturningshop and carpenter shop. Each shop had acapacity of 34 students. At this time studentscompleted their degrees in two years. Post graduatecourses in mechanics were first offered in 1893 andrequired only one additional year. The students whocompleted the additional year received thedesignation of mechanical engineers. In 1895 oillamps on campus were replaced with electric lightsand the electric plant was operated by engineeringstudents. The Mechanical Building was demolishedin 1927 and replaced by Peele Hall. The Park Shopswere built in 1914 and named in honor of Charles B.Park (1867-1944). From 1914 until 1949 theMechanical Engineering Department taught themajority of all shop courses (woodworking,Park Shops are named after Charles Benjamin Park(1867-1944), an expert machinist, who wassuperintendent of shops at NC State for almost fiftyyears, beginning in 1891. The Shops were built in 1914and originally used by the mechanical engineeringdepartment for shop classes.machinery, welding foundry, etc.) in this building.Built in 1890 to house mechanical engineering shops, the Mechanical Building was demolished in 1927 and replaced by PeeleHall.
