I could not attend because we wereplaying, but thank you to everyone thatjoined us in the hospitality area. Several<strong>coach</strong>es said it was nice to get togetherwith such talented people and just talk andrelax. Extra thanks needs to go out toThomas Southall from Cherokee Trail formanning the hospitality area during thetournament. I also want to give a specialthanks to the ball shaggers from St. Vrain<strong>School</strong> District. They do such a great jobkeeping the tournament running smoothlyand I had the joy of doing the chickendance with several of them before the firstmatch on Saturday, so I can tell youfirsthand they are pretty awesome dancersas well.Congratulations need to go out toShana Benson from Gunnison for beingselected our <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Colorado</strong> Coach of theYear. We also want to congratulate ChrisSweeney from St. Mary's for beingselected our <strong>2012</strong> Assistant Coach of theYear.This year at the state tournament we gaveout two special awards, the Horizon andthe Pioneer Awards.Congratulations to Caleb Howard fromResurrection Christian for winning the<strong>2012</strong> Horizon Award. Caleb has been thehead <strong>coach</strong> at Resurrection Christian <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong> for the last seven years. His teamshave earned a state runner-up trophy andhave amassed a 138 and 43 record overthose years. He loves <strong>coach</strong>ing and hasbeen <strong>coach</strong>ing volleyball in some capacitysince graduating from high school;<strong>coach</strong>ing at the middle school, highschool, and club level for both boys andgirls teams. Caleb is also a math teacher atthe school and enjoys the chance to buildrelationships with the students andathletes every day. He is thankful for theopportunity that high school sports offerto teach the athletes about teamwork,selflessness, and dedication. His volleyballteam just qualified for the statetournament for the fourth time.Caleb states, “I am very thankful for themany people who have contributed to thesuccess of this program. This awarddefinitely reflects the efforts of the entire<strong>coach</strong>ing staff from middle school tovarsity. I am thankful for athletes andfamilies who are willing to put the successof the team over individual achievements.I appreciate the camaraderie with theother volleyball <strong>coach</strong>es around the stateand all that I have been able to learn fromthem. I especially want to thank my wifeand kids who are so supportive of all thetime and passion that I pour into thisprogram. I strive to impact the nextgeneration and to glorify God ineverything that I do as a <strong>coach</strong> andteacher.”Congratulations to Bonnie Wallin-Kuntz from Otis for winning the <strong>2012</strong>Pioneer Award. Bonnie began <strong>coach</strong>ingin Northeast <strong>Colorado</strong> 26 years ago. Forthe last 23 years she has been the headvolleyball <strong>coach</strong> at Otis. During that time,Bonnie’s teams have compiled a record of460 wins and 142 losses. This year Otis iscompeting in their eighth straight statetournament under Bonnie’s leadership.During her career Otis has won four 1Astate championships and was runners-uptwice as well. They have also been leaguechampions 14 times during that stretch.Bonnie has earned the 1A <strong>coach</strong> of theyear several times and was the CHSCAAll-<strong>Colorado</strong> Coach of the year in 1998 &2009. Also in 2010, she was a Finalist forthe National Coach of the Year Award.She was the CHSCA volleyball presidentfor <strong>Colorado</strong> and has been a great mentorfor many <strong>coach</strong>es throughout the state.Bonnie states: “I would like to thank myfamily, <strong>coach</strong>ing staff, all of my presentand former players. I would also like togive thanks to the Otis community andparents for all of their support over theyears. I am truly grateful for this award.The State of <strong>Colorado</strong> is full of great<strong>coach</strong>es and I am honored to have myname among them.”The All-State Summer Games volleyballplayer selections have been made andplayers notified. Please help us get yourplayer commitments in and verified assoon as possible. All forms to be filledout can be found on the CHSCA website.Your athletes will then be drafted to oneof four teams for the summer games to beheld in early June at Adam’s State inAlamosa, CO.
