TRUE STORIES OF LIVING UNITED Building a Better Life Preschoolers Give to United Way Giving people more than short-term help, and assisting people in fi nding long-term solutions which put them on the road to a better life are important goals of the United Way and The Salvation Army. Getting your life back on track is very diffi cult when you have an addiction to pain killers, but that’s exactly what Christina did with the help of United Way partner agency, The Salvation Army. Christina grew up in a loving family with good parents, but suffered several emotional losses that made her turn to drugs so she “didn’t have to deal with the pain.” As a result, she became addicted to prescription pain medicine and ended up in jail. She was even faced with the possibility of having her two young girls taken away. The courts offered her a chance to stay at The Salvation Army’s Corrections Program where she would receive counseling and treatment. Even though Christina had tried many programs before unsuccessfully...the people at The Salvation Army got through. Today she lives in the area with her two girls and works a full time job. She’s been clean for several years and dreams of going to college to get a degree in social work so she can help others build a good life. United Way partner agency CCMI’s Montessori preschoolers established the fi ctitious company, Beelicious Foods, after receiving a grant funded by the Junior League of Fort Myers. Grant funds enabled the school to purchase ingredients and tools to make healthy snacks from scratch as well as crafts to make bracelets, picture frames and holiday ornaments. Proceeds from the sale of these items are being donated to the United Way. “This was the highlight of my day,” said Cliff Smith. “These students worked hard for this donation, and I told them it will go a long way to helping someone in our community. I think it’s really great that these young students are already giving back to their community.” “The goal is to teach the kids not only about cultivating and harvesting healthy food, but also about being self-suffi cient individuals and giving back to the community,” said Cindy Venezia, director of CCMI’s Montessori Preschool. “The students are very excited to have raised about $80 from Beelicious product sales.” According to Venezia the students learned how small businesses are established. Beelicious Foods includes students who make up the fi ctitious company’s board of directors and executives. “It makes me feel super duper happy,” said Denaidrick Cook, Beelicious Foods president. “I like to help people,” added Raquia Thompson, vice president. “It makes me happy,” said Mikaia Brown, public relations, “We like United Way.” “This is something I have never seen before in any school, especially a preschool,” said Rashad Thompson, Raquia’s father who was in attendance for the presentation. “I know it means a lot to her.” “These students are learning at an early age that anything is possible and that they are tomorrow’s business owners and entrepreneurs,” said Sarah Owen, CEO of CCMI. “This donation might seem like a little amount to many, but to these kids it’s a lot, and the long-term lessons they have learned today will make a better world tomorrow.” 12
