Advanced Pediatric Life Support (<strong>APLS</strong>) is the def<strong>in</strong>itive<br />
resource <strong>in</strong> <strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e education<br />
for physicians and physician extenders <strong>in</strong> <strong>tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> and<br />
<strong>in</strong> practice. Case-based lectures, small group case<br />
presentations and hands-on skills labs will be used<br />
to demonstrate concepts and procedures used <strong>in</strong><br />
response to life-threaten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>pediatric</strong> emergencies.<br />
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (<strong>PALS</strong>) provides the<br />
participant with the knowledge and skills needed to<br />
know and perform an actual resuscitation of a child <strong>in</strong><br />
respiratory or cardiac distress. The course <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
lectures, skills stations, and <strong>in</strong>teractive sessions that<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrate knowledge and skills <strong>in</strong>to a cl<strong>in</strong>ically useful<br />
discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
The Ill<strong>in</strong>ois College of Emergency Physician’s comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>APLS</strong> * <strong>PALS</strong> course provides state-of-the-art<br />
education presented by faculty who are experts <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Skills stations, case studies, small group demonstrations<br />
and lectures will review the concepts and techniques<br />
necessary to provide the best <strong>in</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> <strong>care</strong> for<br />
children. The course covers a variety of <strong>emergency</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />
topics <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g trauma, shock, cardiopulmonary<br />
arrest and metabolic and environmental emergencies.<br />
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will:<br />

Possess the skills necessary to resuscitate, stabilize<br />
and triage a child who’s seriously ill or <strong>in</strong>jured.<br />

<strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>care</strong> topics such as respiratory failure,<br />
pa<strong>in</strong> management, sedation and trauma.<br />

EMSC Recommendations<br />
Ill<strong>in</strong>ois Emergency Medical Services for Children<br />
recommends that health <strong>care</strong> providers receive specialized<br />
<strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> <strong>tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong>. Ill<strong>in</strong>ois EMSC has developed<br />
<strong>emergency</strong> department guidel<strong>in</strong>es that address professional<br />
qualifications, recommend<strong>in</strong>g all physicians who <strong>care</strong> for<br />
children complete a course <strong>in</strong> <strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> <strong>care</strong>.<br />
The guidel<strong>in</strong>es recommend 16 hours of cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g medical<br />
education <strong>in</strong> <strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> topics every two years. The<br />
ICEP <strong>APLS</strong> * <strong>PALS</strong> course has been approved by Resurrection<br />
Medical Center for a maximum of 16 hours <strong>in</strong> Category 1<br />
credit toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.<br />
EMSC also recommends that registered nurses on staff <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>emergency</strong> departments complete a course <strong>in</strong> <strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong><br />
<strong>care</strong>. It is also recommended that all nurses regularly<br />
assigned to the <strong>emergency</strong> department complete 8 hours of<br />
<strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> <strong>care</strong> focused cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education every<br />
two years. <strong>APLS</strong> meets these recommendations.<br />
In addition, EMSC recommends Physician Assistants and Nurse<br />
Practitioners complete 16 hours of <strong>pediatric</strong> <strong>emergency</strong> <strong>care</strong><br />
focused cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education every two years.
Course Location<br />
<strong>APLS</strong> * <strong>PALS</strong> will be held Monday, January 26 &<br />
Tuesday, January 27, 2009, <strong>in</strong> the Auditorium at Holy<br />
Family Medical Center, 100 North River Road, Des<br />
Pla<strong>in</strong>es, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois. Registration will be open from 7:30<br />
AM - 8:00 AM on January 26. The course will beg<strong>in</strong> at<br />
8:00 AM and end at 5:15 PM each day.<br />

The comb<strong>in</strong>ed course format offers participants<br />
the best of the <strong>APLS</strong> and <strong>PALS</strong> curricula, <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
case-based lectures, small group discussions, and<br />
