sou<strong>the</strong>rnmost part of Kamari beach,<br />

by <strong>the</strong> mountain. Ancient “kamara” is<br />

carved on <strong>the</strong> foot of Mesa Vouno.<br />

Following <strong>the</strong> earthquake of 1956<br />

most of farmers from Mesa Gonia<br />

moved that time <strong>to</strong> Kamari <strong>to</strong> settle<br />

down <strong>the</strong>re. Rows of shelters for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

animals (so called “stavli”) were built<br />

<strong>to</strong> temporarily keep <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>re, until<br />

new barns are fixed. The shelters are<br />

located near <strong>the</strong> football field, opposite<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kamari Tours Transfer Office.<br />

Kamari has also two cinemas, one<br />

at <strong>the</strong> square and o<strong>the</strong>r some 200 m<br />

behind <strong>the</strong> village (open-air), on <strong>the</strong><br />

road <strong>to</strong>wards Fira. Across <strong>the</strong> street<br />

you can play mini-billards. When you<br />

continue <strong>to</strong> walk along <strong>the</strong> main street<br />

you will approach Episkopi Gonias, Byzantine church of <strong>the</strong> 12th century. To get <strong>the</strong>re follow<br />

<strong>the</strong> signpost by <strong>the</strong> road or turn up behind <strong>the</strong> gas-station.<br />

Estimated time for sightseeing:<br />

Ancient Thira: on foot - 40-45 minutes up, 30 minutes down, visiting <strong>the</strong> site: 1 hr at least<br />

Zoodochos Pigi – 20 minutes one way from Antinea.<br />

Where <strong>to</strong> eat and do shopping:<br />

There are a countless number of various taverns and restaurants, by <strong>the</strong> sea side and away<br />

from it, more or less noisy and more or less romantic, serving Greek food, Chinese, Indian and<br />

more. There are also cafeterias, grill-bars, creperies, pizzerias…You are in danger of starvation<br />

if you are not able <strong>to</strong> make decision in this wide assortment. Worth visiting are taverns at<br />

<strong>the</strong> south end of <strong>the</strong> Black Beach, like Zorbas or Atmosphere picturesquely located near <strong>the</strong><br />

Kamari Tours Office. International cuisine is served in Mythos tavern while traditional meals<br />

are offered in Salivaros.<br />

In Kamari <strong>the</strong>re is no problem <strong>to</strong> buy almost anything you wish, from souvenirs, art items,<br />

books, clo<strong>the</strong>s and shoe, <strong>to</strong>urist items <strong>to</strong><br />

cameras, memory cards, even volcanic<br />

candles. The s<strong>to</strong>res are spread along <strong>the</strong><br />

beach and all over <strong>the</strong> city.<br />

Lithos jewellery s<strong>to</strong>re you will find on <strong>the</strong><br />

beach, next <strong>to</strong> Kamari Tours office.<br />

Vic<strong>to</strong>ria Furs & Lea<strong>the</strong>r S<strong>to</strong>re is located<br />

down <strong>the</strong> street from Ag. Nektarios church<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> beach.<br />
