southernmost part of Kamari beach,
by the mountain. Ancient “kamara” is
carved on the foot of Mesa Vouno.
Following the earthquake of 1956
most of farmers from Mesa Gonia
moved that time to Kamari to settle
down there. Rows of shelters for their
animals (so called “stavli”) were built
to temporarily keep them there, until
new barns are fixed. The shelters are
located near the football field, opposite
to the Kamari Tours Transfer Office.
Kamari has also two cinemas, one
at the square and other some 200 m
behind the village (open-air), on the
road towards Fira. Across the street
you can play mini-billards. When you
continue to walk along the main street
you will approach Episkopi Gonias, Byzantine church of the 12th century. To get there follow
the signpost by the road or turn up behind the gas-station.
Estimated time for sightseeing:
Ancient Thira: on foot - 40-45 minutes up, 30 minutes down, visiting the site: 1 hr at least
Zoodochos Pigi – 20 minutes one way from Antinea.
Where to eat and do shopping:
There are a countless number of various taverns and restaurants, by the sea side and away
from it, more or less noisy and more or less romantic, serving Greek food, Chinese, Indian and
more. There are also cafeterias, grill-bars, creperies, pizzerias…You are in danger of starvation
if you are not able to make decision in this wide assortment. Worth visiting are taverns at
the south end of the Black Beach, like Zorbas or Atmosphere picturesquely located near the
Kamari Tours Office. International cuisine is served in Mythos tavern while traditional meals
are offered in Salivaros.
In Kamari there is no problem to buy almost anything you wish, from souvenirs, art items,
books, clothes and shoe, tourist items to
cameras, memory cards, even volcanic
candles. The stores are spread along the
beach and all over the city.
Lithos jewellery store you will find on the
beach, next to Kamari Tours office.
Victoria Furs & Leather Store is located
down the street from Ag. Nektarios church
to the beach.

Perissa – 1hr walk across Mesa Vouno.
