The church interior was decorated with frescoes. Unfortunately, humidity more than the time, caused heavy damages to them. While being on the courtyard of the church devote some time to enjoy the nice view of Kamari and Monolithos, as well as the gorgeous mountain of Prophet Elias to the southwest. On the back of the church is growing a carob tree, the fruits of which are considered a substitute of chocolate, popularly used as donkey food but also to treat diabetes. At the parking area, there is a small sweet-water spring. Springs of sweet water are very scant in Santorini. Do not be mislead - this one collects rain water... No more than 80 m down the street towards Mesa Gonia there is a white church located within a small graveyard, and one more spring of rain water nearby. Here you will find a bench where you can sit and contemplate the surroundings… Estimated time for sightseeing: 15 min is enough. Where to eat: The nearest place to have refreshment is an ouzerie-tavern in Mesa Gonia. Nearest spot of tourist interest: Mesa Gonia (approximately 10 minutes walking to the north) MESA GONIA SMART Bus Stop: In front of the Canava Argyros. Brief characteristics: Once, Mesa Gonia was the center of Santorini’s wine production. Located on the “foot” of the mountain, it is the nearest village to Kamari. In old maps Mesa Gonia is referred to as Kato Gonia (The Corner Below) in contrast to the nearby village Exo Gonia (previously called: Apano Gonia – The Corner Above). Two recognized old wineries are located in Mesa Gonia: Canava Roussos (established in 1836) and Canava Argyros (established in 1903). The history of viticulture is as old as Santorini itself but the real boom falls to the 17th and the 19th century. Due to the specific climate (hot summers, strong winds and lack of rainfalls), the grapes of Santorini are very sweet and the wine is strong and of high quality. Since almost everybody on the island was cultivating grapes, kanaves (wine cellars) became an integral part of each house. In practice kanava is a cellar in which they press the grapes and store the wine barrels. It must be shady and cool, and have a small window for ventilation. Usually kanava has two rooms – one in where no light can enter, equipped with two wine-presses (separate for red and for white grapes), and a second one – antechamber with windows that allow a good ventilation. However, there is something more, not just wineries that make Mesa Gonia famous…History of Santorini is a history of reiterating volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
