Message from the PresidentDear Friends in Christ,What a year! A great year! In the midst of a slowly-recovering economy, your ministry of Lutheran SocialServices (LSS) of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan stood strong and tall in delivering excellent service. In 2004, wewere able to extend services to over 100,000 people and ended the year fiscally strong. This is an extraordinaryfeat and I am proud of our LSS staff and all of you whose support made it possible. I invite you to peruse the pagesthat follow to see the statistics and read the stories behind them. Here are a few highlights:• In 2004, we saw a deepening of our relationshipswith Evangelical Lutheran Church in America(ELCA) congregations. This is incredibly powerfulas we see volunteers, prayer groups, quilters, financial support and a myriad of partnershipsrise to help those we serve. An important part intelling our story was embodied in our new video— “The Butterfly Effect.” Distributed to over 800congregations, the video shares stories of thecongregations’ hands at work through dramaticvisuals. This is powerful, powerful work you do!• LSS also continued to provide creative andquality services to individuals coming out ofour correctional facilities, to adoptive families,to runaway youth, to families in distress, and torefugee families beginning a new life. In fact, thenumber of new refugee arrivals — 893 — reachedthe highest it has been in over 15 years. Importantwork indeed!• LSS partnered with the State of Wisconsin in newways to assist families and children throughoutthe state. This was seen in services to childrenwith autism, those in our foster care programs, and through special needs adoptions. We alsoassisted in moving persons with special needs fromstate-run institutions to the community and intotheir own homes — some for the very first time.• You’ll see that financial support was also strongin 2004. LSS has been blessed with church, community and government partners who are allcaptured by the impact we are making, and theyhave responded with their gifts. We were thankful tosee an increase in individual donations of almost40-percent! That speaks strongly of the generosityof our supporters and the strong work of our staff.Despite anuneasy economy,LSS has growndramatically inthe past year, and we are notslowing down! While a child isat risk of abuse, while a familyis in distress, while an olderadult is struggling, while thereis difficulty inthe lives of ourDavid N. Larson, President and CEOneighbors — wewill do what we can to wade in and make a difference.LSS has long been thoughtful, resourceful andnever tiring in finding ways to provide quality services, while at the same time being wise fiscal stewards. With your help, we will continue to passionately live outour mission, “Motivated by the compassion of Christ,we help people improve the quality of their lives.”All this is enabled through, and a reflection of, thegrace and love of Jesus Christ. It is a privilege to bepart of this great ministry with you. Together, we makea powerful difference in this world! In Christ,David N. Larson, President and CEOWhile a child is at risk of abuse, while a family is in distress, while an older adult is struggling, while there is difficulty inthe lives of our neighbors — we will do what we can towade in and make a difference.2

Getting Him Up and Going“They’re really caring people who want the best foreveryone,” states Jon Feucht, a UW-Whitewatergraduate student who receives services from LSS’Whitewater Home Health program. Jon is referringto the LSS personal care workers who come to hishome three times each day.Jon is part of a unique program within LSS thatserves college students who have complex physicaldisabilities or illnesses that require special attention. This might include spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, or in Jon’s case, cerebral palsy.“We provide in-home personal care assistance forour customers up to four times each day so they mayattend college,” explains Andy Anselmi, programsupervisor.Jon, who has been with the program since itsbeginning in 1997, is not able to walk or speak. Heuses a wheelchair to get around and a special communicationdevice to talk. The LSS staff help him getup and going every morning and then return throughoutthe day to assist with meals. It’s a good thing too, because getting Jon up and going means he is able toshare his life and his talents with others.Jon has led an extraordinary life and has had aremarkable impact in the world of augmentativealternative communications (AAC). AAC deviceshelp individuals like Jon talk on the phone, speak inclass, and communicate with their family and friends.“Getting a communication device seven years ago reallychanged every aspect of my life. For the first time, Iwas able to talk on the phone,” Jon explains. Prior tothat, he used a word board and pointed to the words assomeone else read them aloud. With the AAC device, his life has never beenthe same. In 2000, Jon developed a summer camp forchildren and young adults with severe speech disabilities. For many participants of the Authentic Voices ofAmerica (AVA) camp, this is their first interaction withothers who use similar devices. During the week, campers participate in a variety of activities andrealize they can do many things they never thoughtpossible. To date, the camp has served 40 to 50campers and according to Jon, “is just getting started.”In addition to the camp, Jon has written two booksand has received several national awards for hiswork and advancement of free speech in the field ofaugmentative alternative communications. “Jon is anamazing person,” says Eileen Agen, a Certified NursingAssistant for this LSS program who has seen Jonthrough some difficult times. “He’s overcome so manyobstacles in life, and to see him grow into such asuccessful adult is truly amazing. He’s one of my heroes.”Jon is currently in graduate school studying specialeducation. After graduating, he hopes to continueworking with young people with disabilities. TheWhitewater Home Health workers will be there eachday to help get him up and going so he can reach thosegoals…and many more.Jon Feucht, a UW-Whitewater graduate student who receives services from LSS’Whitewater Home Health program.89

Total contributions to Lutheran SocialServices reached just under $3.0 million, an eightpercent increase from the previous year. The mostnotable rise came in individual giving. Boosted by 779new donors, donations from individuals rose by almost40-percent.As contract dollars remain tight and show littleincrease, this gift income becomes the lifeline formany programs. Over the past two years, LSS hasmade a concerted effort to build income from othersources, particularly its foundation. This commitmenthas brought eight new members to the FoundationBoard, which works to increase the financial resources ofLSS. We have made great strides on our $35 millionendowment-building initiative, but still have a long roadahead. The numbers below and the increasing interest inour agency and those we serve give us great hope.In addition, we continue to draw strength from thecongregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church inAmerica (ELCA). Church giving also saw an increaseof eight percent. Churches not only provide the in-kindand financial support listed here, but also partner withLSS and our programs in a variety of other ways.Congregations provide countless volunteer hours, some provide office space for LSS programs eitherat a discounted rate or free of charge, and yet otherscontinue to pray for LSS and those we serve. All ofthese efforts are vital in allowing our agency to growand touch more and more communities. As we look to the future, we will continue to buildand enhance relationships with keystakeholders and are foreverthankful for all we havereceived and will receive inthe years to come.Below is the breakdown of contributions for 2004:Individuals: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$ 540,190Churches: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$ 1,067,578Corporations/Organizations: . . . . . . . .$ 121,623Foundations: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$ 183,237Planned Gifts: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$ 330,726Gifts In-Kind: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$ 737,402TOTAL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$ 2,980,756Adding on to the nearly $3.0 million in giftincome listed above, 50-plus United Way agenciesthroughout the two-state area contributed $1.6 millionto support LSS programming.
