Dear Friends and AlumniThe past 12 months was an exciting time on campusas Dutchess Community College celebrated its50th Anniversary, enrolled the largest class in ourhistory, and had the pleasure to recognize our first $1 millionlifetime donor. The College celebrated its 50th anniversary with numerousevents: lectures, seminars, theatrical productions, two festivegalas, a ‘50s Sock Hop, a culminating fireworks display, and much more. A generous grant from the DysonFoundation allowed us to complete a socio-economic impactstudy that highlighted how important to our areaDutchess Community College is now and has been in thepast. The study concluded that the College has had a beneficialimpact on Dutchess County and New York State, and that public support of Dutchess Community College isan investment rather than a cost. The creation of Dutchess Community College 50 years agowas achieved by the commitment and hard work of manydedicated and visionary residents who saw the need for anaffordable and accessible educational institution in DutchessCounty. Community colleges as a whole were relatively new50 years ago: there were only 40 in the country at that time.Since that day in September 1958 when the College welcomedits first incoming class of 674 full- and part-time students, almost 40,000 students have graduated and countlessothers have taken advantage of the College's numerous offerings- from academic programs to one-year vocationalcertificates, and from workforce training to GED classes.I'm sure many of you reading this report today count yourselvesamong that number. The fall 2007 semester sawthe largest incoming class inthe College's history - 8,540students. Selecting DCC asthe starting point for a collegeeducation has become a verypopular choice for the resi-Dr. D. David ConklinCollege President“Dutchess CommunityCollege is proud of itsmission of providingaffordable, accessible, and excellent educationand service.”dents of Dutchess County as people recognize the value ofa DCC education. The College has, in fact, become thecollege of choice for County residents. More than one-thirdof all students in the county who go to college attendDutchess Community College. This figure is an affirmationof the quality of the affordable, accessible education thatwe offer.Another major event of which we are proud and grateful isthat Llelanie Orcutt became our first lifetime $1million donor. We are honored that Mrs. Orcutt has been afriend and supporter of the College for many years. Herhusband, Jack, was one of the College's founding facultymembers and the first director of student activities. TheDCC Foundation holds a golf tournament annually in hishonor.Dutchess Community College is proud of its mission of providingaffordable, accessible, and excellent education andservice. As we pause each year to assess our performance,we are reminded of, and grateful for, the support we receivefrom you, our graduates and friends. Without yoursupport, we would not succeed as well as we do in fulfillingour mission.Thank you again for supporting Dutchess Community Collegeand the Foundation. I look forward to seeing you atone of the many special and cultural events held at theCollege throughout the coming year.2008 ANNUAL REPORT1 1

education ispurpose“The task of the modern educator is not to cutdown jungles, but to irrigate deserts.”- C.S. Lewis

Dear Friends of DCCRoger Smith,Chairman, DCCFoundationAs this year's Annual Report reflects, 2008 was aterrific year for the Foundation. Not only was ita successful fundraising year, but it was a yearfilled with 50th Anniversary activities. As the College finishedits first half-century of service to Dutchess County,we can reflect on the many lives that have been changedfor the better by DCC. Almost 40,000 people have graduated, countless others have sought training and thousandshave begun their educational journey here. The 50th Anniversary helped us set new highs in contributionsand grant revenue, and our Annual Fund had its bestyear ever. The special events we sponsored were tremendousincluding our 50th Anniversary Gala that engaged theentire community and raised needed funds for our students.Despite the disappointing drop in the stock market and inour endowment during the last months of the year, throughthe success of our fundraising and special events we willbe able to provide scholarships to our acclaimed ConklinScholars and financially needy students; furnish grants tofaculty and staff for special projects vital to College activities;and finance equipment, technology and campus improvements. These are essentialgoals for which funding is notavailable from any other source.I want to thank the members ofthe Foundation Board of Directorsfor their never-ceasing workand study on behalf of the College.Very special thanks to TrishPrunty, our executive director, and her very capable andhard-working staff. Dr. D. David Conklin, our College President, contributes greatly to the success of the Foundationand to all fundraising and special events. A special thanksgoes out to him.Scholarships, grants, technology, faculty projects and campusimprovements are never-ending needs and we knowwe can count on the continued participation of DutchessCounty and Hudson Valley citizens. Together, despitethe difficult times, we shall attain the goals which are sodesirable and essential for students, faculty and the entirecommunity.2008 ANNUAL REPORT3 3

education ispower“Education is the most powerful weapon whichyou can use to change the world.”- Nelson Mandela

Happy Anniversary Dutchess!Last year was a busy one at DCC as the College celebrated50 years of excellence and service to the residents ofDutchess County and the mid-Hudson Valley. Our yearlongcelebration culminated with a Gala Dinner Dance atthe Grandview in Poughkeepsie with 500 of our closestfriends. Having the community come together in such a bigway demonstrates the amazing support the College enjoyslocally. People want to be involved with the College andgreatly value its extraordinary impact on the mid-HudsonValley.The 50th Anniversary celebration also marked exceptionalgrowth in our annual fund and in fundraising overall. Wesaw an additional 765 alumni and friends contribute toDutchess last year, which means that more than 2,500 peopleare now supporting the College. This is a tremendous success!Giving to community colleges tends to be much lessfrequent than giving to four-year schools. What I have foundover the years is that alumni often say that DCC had agreater impact on their lives than their four-year school.Yet, giving tends to be much lower. Now is the time forchange, however. It is time to support Dutchess at the levelsthat it deserves. Many of our students are in great needand the time has come for us to be able to award more andlarger scholarships.Even though 2008 was a fantastic year that saw the Foundationraise $1.7 million, it is truly only the beginning. Asa relatively young college we are pleased that alumni donateto the best of their ability. Alumni giving is currently at5% and we hope to see that percentage grow as we movePatricia L. PruntyFoundation ExecutiveDirector“Having the communitycome together in such abig way demonstrates theamazing support theCollege enjoys locally.”into the future. It is time now to give back, time to increaseopportunities and time to show support for your College.More donations mean that we can award more scholarships, therefore helping more deserving students. This inturn helps everyone, as our successful alumni become leadersin their communities around the country.Thank you for making 2008 a wonderful celebratory year. When the call went out to support the 50th AnniversaryAlumni Fund, many of you responded. If you did not, pleasethink about donating to the Foundation. As Benjamin Franklinsaid, "An investment in knowledge always pays the bestinterest," and at DCC your donation will receive a very highrate of return!2008 ANNUAL REPORT5 5

classnotesBelieve in MeMichelle Barone, '04 is on the path to fulfilling the dream she's had since she was a child. At age 6 she began singing contemporary music and popular showtunes, working on pitchand range. Even at a young age, she was able to not only appreciate music, but also toidentify with the lyrics. Michelle found herself drawn to Pop and R&B for their dynamicinfusion of rhythm and lyrics. Capturing her own life experiences, "Believe In Me" isalso Michelle's autobiography, illustrating personal chapters of her life that will resonatewith her listeners. Her imaginative and heartfelt lyrics have the capacity to reveal both her tragedies andaspirations, and few singers have Michelle's ability to stylistically change their voiceto suit each song.Michelle's strongest influence was her father- His renditions of Broadway showtunes often floatedthrough their home, showing his daughter that she too could have the courage to sing in front of anaudience.Michelle has recently played at BB. Kings in New York City, opened for NE-YO at the Mid-HudsonCivic Center, and celebrated her album release party at the Chance Theater. She has taken her vocaltraining and education from Dutchess Community College and Marist College to a new level to createthis album. She feels that "this cd is meant for all types of people, it has different songs for differentpeople." She states, "I have many goals, and I'm ready to take on whatever I need to in order to makemy dreams become reality."And the Winner is...Maria Grace Decken, RN, NBCT '82 received the Associationfor Career and Technical Education Region 2 Teacher of the YearAward on Oct. 11, 2008.
