Apple sets a July 11 release<br />

for iPhone 3G (8GB/$199,<br />

16GB/$299), a faster, plasticbodied,<br />

and GPS-enabled<br />

iPhone intended to appeal<br />

to new and international<br />

customers. Seventy countries - including Japan and<br />

Australia - will get the new model, with software<br />

version 2.0 and the App Store pushed off to match<br />

the 3G’s launch date; a “push” notification system for<br />

both e-mails and apps is under development. Rate<br />

plan announcements anger many potential buyers,<br />

leading to petitions for lower prices, some effective.<br />

iPhone 3G Bows<br />

Starting in Australia and<br />

New Zealand, the iPhone<br />

3G begins a weekend of<br />

worldwide launches. Lines<br />

form at Apple and partner<br />

stores, but activation delays,<br />

dropped calls, and software<br />

problems disappoint buyers.<br />

Still, Apple sells 1 million<br />

units in three days.<br />

New classic, nano, touch released<br />

Confirming earlier leaks, Apple unveils the<br />

fourth-generation iPod nano (8GB/$149,<br />

16GB/$199), repacking the prior model<br />

in a taller, more colorful aluminum shell,<br />

and the second-gen iPod touch (8GB-<br />

32GB/$229-$399), with a speaker, volume<br />

buttons and Nike + iPod wireless support.<br />

A 120GB ($249) iPod classic replaces the<br />

old 80GB and 160GB models, and four iPod<br />

shuffle colors are updated to brighter tones.<br />

iTunes Store Sells 5 Billion Songs<br />

Now with a catalog of over 8 million tracks,<br />

the Store also claims to be the world’s most<br />

popular online movie store, as well.<br />

July 10<br />

iTunes 7.7, App Store, Apple TV 2.1<br />

One day before the release of iPhone<br />

3G, Apple releases iTunes 7.7, adding<br />

the App Store and an initial slate of 500<br />

downloadable applications, 25% of them<br />

free. The company also releases Apple<br />

TV software 2.1, which like iTunes 7.7 lets<br />

iPod touches and iPhones serve as remote<br />

controls for playback of their libraries.<br />
