Minutes from the Woods Resort sits thefirst <strong>of</strong> five state parks with golf courses,Cacapon Resort State Park, home to a RobertTrent Jones Sr. designed layout. Hatfield-McCoy MountainsTRAVEL REGIONTwisted Gun <strong>Golf</strong> Course, WharncliffeThe Hatfield-McCoy Mountains Regionis located in the southwestern corner <strong>of</strong><strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> along the Kentucky border. Itsmountainous topography has allowed golfcourse architects to create challenging layouts.It’s this same rolling terrain which has madethis region <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> a mecca <strong>of</strong> sortsfor adrenaline junkies, as home to the wellknownHatfield-McCoy Trails. This is not agolf trail though, this is a system <strong>of</strong> trails forall-terrain vehicles or ATVs. As one <strong>of</strong> thelargest <strong>of</strong>f-highway vehicle trail systems in theworld, Hatfield-McCoy Trails stretch morethan 500 miles and <strong>of</strong>fer something forevery skill level. Trails range from the scenicmountain views <strong>of</strong> Pinnacle Creek, to thetight and twisting trails <strong>of</strong> Bearwallow. Manytrails connect to <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>'s “ATV friendlytowns” where visitors can grab a bite to eatand experience true Southern hospitality.The region was named for the famous postCivil War decade-long feud between theHatfield and McCoy families. Labor battlesare also part <strong>of</strong> the mountainous region’shistory, with conflict between coal miners andmining companies in the 1920s. With mineslocated throughout, the importance <strong>of</strong> coalfrom a lifestyle and historical perspectivepermeates the region. In fact, the CoalHeritage Museum is located in Madison anda re-enactment <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> those labor disputes,turned bloody battle, is held annually in thesmall town <strong>of</strong> Matewan.The nearby Twisted Gun <strong>Golf</strong> Club inWharncliffe is appropriately known as thejewel <strong>of</strong> the coal fields. This links-style courseis placed on a former mine site in southernMingo county. With forgiving fairways andsmooth greens, the course has four sets <strong>of</strong> tees,playing from 7,015 yards from the backtees to only 5,155 yards from the forwardtees. <strong>Golf</strong>Online.com as a "Top Fifty under Fifty"in the country, ranking 17th <strong>of</strong> courses thatthe public can play for under fifty dollars.The small town <strong>of</strong> Lavalette is home to two18-hole golf courses. Sugarwood <strong>Golf</strong> Club isa championship layout. Its front nine has treelinedfairways and water coming into playon three holes. A railroad track runs throughthe middle <strong>of</strong> the course, but it seldom getsused. The back nine has three lakes cominginto play. Its signature hole is number 13, a171-yard, par 3, which requires an accuratetee shot to an undulating, island green.Twin Silos at Lavalette is a hilly coursefeaturing water hazards, mature trees, andsand bunkers incorporated into its design.Strategically placed ponds come into play onat least eight holes. Metro ValleyTRAVEL REGIONThe Metro Valley Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>is home to the state’s two most populouscities, Charleston, the state capital andHuntington, home to Marshall University.Both metropolitan areas <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong>cultural activities and dining choices. Thegolf courses in the region are traditionallymaintained and take advantage <strong>of</strong> the rollinghills and waterways throughout.A suburb <strong>of</strong> the capital city, SouthCharleston is home to Little Creek <strong>Golf</strong>Course. Established in 1921, it boasts achallenging 6,096 yard layout, which windsover and around beautiful mountains,demanding a variety <strong>of</strong> shots and placing apremium on accuracy <strong>of</strong>f the tee.The Kanawha County Park & RecreationCommission operates two golf courses in theCharleston area. Big Bend <strong>Golf</strong> Course isan 18-hole championship golf course locatedin Tornado. The county-owned course wasdesigned with every skill level in mind. Thefairways are tree-lined, and water comes intoplay on three holes. Some <strong>of</strong> the greens arelarge and have enough slope to test puttingskills. The Coal River flows alongside part <strong>of</strong>the course and adds to the beautiful scenery.Coonskin Park features the county’s18-hole, par 3 golf course and driving range.This executive course was built on flat terrainamong rolling hillsides. The course is openin places and challenging in others as thetree-lined fairways can be quite tight.There are small, target greens on some holesand mounding throughout. Mid-Ohio ValleyTRAVEL REGION<strong>Golf</strong> Club <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>, WaverlyThe Mid-Ohio Valley Region <strong>of</strong> the stateis bordered by Ohio, with the wide OhioRiver separating the two states. Rollinghills and valleys define the Mid-OhioValley Region, providing an abundance <strong>of</strong>outdoor activities. These include boating,fishing, mountain biking, birding, canoeing,camping and, <strong>of</strong> course, golf.A major metropolis for the region isParkersburg. The city's rich heritage, much<strong>of</strong> it involving the early oil and gas industry,is presented at several museums and historicsites. Most notable among these is theBlennerhassett Island Historical State Park,home to a 7,000 square foot mansion builtin 1798. It’s preserved in its original gloryand open for tours, providing a snapshot <strong>of</strong>what life was like for the wealthy barons inthe late 18th and early 19th centuries.Parkersburg is home to two publiclyaccessiblecourses. Worthington <strong>Golf</strong> Clubwas built on relatively flat terrain, so it’s afavorite among walkers. A creek, whichwinds throughout the layout, provides achallenge on several holes. The South Hills<strong>Golf</strong> Club is a championship 18-hole designwith each hole <strong>of</strong>fering its own uniqueset <strong>of</strong> challenges. Measuring just under 6,500yards from the back tees with spaciouslanding areas strategically accented byboth fairway and green-side bunkers,accurate shot-making is a must. Waterhazards are encountered on several <strong>of</strong> theholes. A meandering stream flows throughoutmost <strong>of</strong> the course.Greenhills Country Club in Ravenswood<strong>of</strong>fers one <strong>of</strong> the areas more challenginglayouts. The 18-hole <strong>Golf</strong> Club <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>in Waverly features rolling fairways, wellmanicuredgreens and a player-friendlylayout. The course, which opened in 1959,was constructed on hilly terrain but providesgenerous landing areas in the fairways.Water hazards, in the form <strong>of</strong> a large lakeand four small ponds, come into play on sixholes. The course was cut out <strong>of</strong> a forest somany <strong>of</strong> the fairways are tree-lined. Mountaineer CountryTRAVEL REGIONMountainview Course at Lakeview <strong>Golf</strong> Resort & Spa, MorgantownTucked halfway between the twopanhandle regions is the MountaineerCountry Region. Morgantown, home toseven golf courses, is golf-central for theregion. It’s located just an hour south <strong>of</strong>Pittsburgh. As home to <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>University, the town <strong>of</strong>fers lots <strong>of</strong> nightlifeand dining options, as well as other outdooractivities, such as mountain biking, raftingand fishing.Lakeview Resort in Morgantown <strong>of</strong>ferstwo championship golf courses, a full servicespa, two restaurants, a 187-room hotel withstandard guestrooms and suites, as wellas 52 two-bedroom, fully-equipped condosalongside one <strong>of</strong> the courses. The resort’stwo 18-hole courses are distinctly different.The historic Lakeview Course opened itsfirst nine holes in 1950 and the second ninein 1954. The Lakeview Course is rated 4 starsby <strong>Golf</strong> Digest’s Places to Play and has beenrated among the top 100 public courses inAmerica. The course <strong>of</strong>fers an intricatetree-lined design, featuring large undulatinggreens, tight fairways and scenic views.The Lakeview Course boasts two signatureholes - the 564-yard 7th which features a180-foot vertical drop from tee to green and<strong>of</strong>fers beautiful views <strong>of</strong> Cheat Lake and the620-yard 18th which is one <strong>of</strong> the mostchallenging par 5s you’ll ever encounter. Thegreen has never been reached in two.The newer Mountainview Course wasdesigned by Bryan Ault and opened in 1985.The course winds through the foothills<strong>of</strong> the Allegheny Mountains, is very hillyand challenging, and its medium-sizedgreens have some undulation.
