16<strong>Craig</strong> was born and raised in Greenville, SouthCarolina with medical care as an integral partof his life. His father is a urologist and hisoldest brother is a cardio-vascular surgeon.When he graduated from high school, <strong>Craig</strong>’sfocus was on management, and he attended“EJCH is an integral part of this communityand together with the support thatwe have from such a world-renowned academicinstitution as <strong>Emory</strong> Healthcare,the corporate community, and the supportof the people that we are here toserve, I am excited about the future ofwhat we can do to assure the health andwell-being of everyone in our community.”and graduated from Furman University with aBachelor’s degree in Business Administration.But, while <strong>Craig</strong> was at Furman, it was the opportunityto ride in an ambulance with a friend,who was a paramedic that led to <strong>Craig</strong>’s nextcareer move and continuing education in thedirection of hands-on medical care. “When Ispent the day riding in the ambulance, I gothooked, and I knew that being a paramedicwas what I wanted to do,” said <strong>Craig</strong>.CountyLine | September 2011 | www.CountyLineMagazine.netAfter graduating from Furman, <strong>Craig</strong> completedan Associate of Health Services degree,with an emergency medical technology emphasis,at Greenville Technical College. He joinedthe emergency medical services departmentof Greenville County and worked as a paramedicfor the next seven years. “Working as aparamedic shaped my perspective on life andhelped to develop my personal mission for acareer in the healthcare field. The training andtools that I was given provided me with the opportunityto make an impact on many people’slives. For just a matterof minutes—from thetime that I arrived onthe scene until I deliveredthe patient to theemergency room—I wasable to give the patientmedical care that madea difference in the outcome,but I was alsoable to make an impactby being a calming forceto the patient duringtheir chaos.” Many yearsafter <strong>Craig</strong> had movedon from his career as aparamedic, he was visitingGreenville and wasapproached by a womanwhose mother had suffereda stroke. <strong>Craig</strong> had been the paramedicwho treated her on the ride to the hospital.“This woman, who I didn’t know, rememberedthat I had been the paramedic who was withher mother when she suffered a stroke manyyears ago,” said <strong>Craig</strong>. “She told me how muchcomfort I had brought to her mother duringher medical crisis. It was incredibly rewardingto hear that I had been a calming force andcomfort to this woman’s mother, and I wouldn’ttrade the years that I worked as a paramedicfor anything.” It was also during the time that<strong>Craig</strong> was a paramedic that he met his futurewife, Pam, when he brought a patient into theemergency room (ER) at Greenville Memorial<strong>Hospital</strong>. Pam, who was a nurse in the ER, and<strong>Craig</strong>, dated for two years before they weremarried, and they recently celebrated theirthirteenth anniversary. With his future plannedwith Pam, <strong>Craig</strong> made the decision that he wasready to go back to school and continue hiseducation in healthcare management.While continuing to work full-time as a paramedic,<strong>Craig</strong> attended the Medical Universityof South Carolina/Clemson University programat the University Center in Greenville. He completedthe three year degree program in lessthan two years, graduating with a Master’s inHealth Administration. By then, he had beenworking as a paramedic for seven years, andwas ready to transition to a career in healthcaremanagement. <strong>Craig</strong> went to work forHealth Management Associates’ (HMA) LakeNorman Regional Medical Center as their assistantexecutive director in 2002. This 117-bed regional medical center that was locatedin Mooresville, North Carolina provided <strong>Craig</strong>with experience in developing new programsand processes for the facility. His hard workand accomplishments were recognized and,in 2003, <strong>Craig</strong> was promoted to take on theposition of chief operating officer at HMA’sSandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet,North Carolina. In this position, <strong>Craig</strong> was responsiblefor the daily operations for the radiology,laboratory, cardiopulmonary, physicaltherapy, environmental and facility services,and dietary departments. One of <strong>Craig</strong>’s majoraccomplishments was the improvements thathe made to the radiology department, whichincluded the purchase and installation of newequipment. In 2004, <strong>Craig</strong> was transferred toHMA’s Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center,a 116-bed medical center and was the chiefoperating officer there for two years, whenhe accepted the position of vice president ofprofessional services at Oconee Medical Centerin Seneca, South Carolina. This facilitywas a 169-bed acute care facility, a 120-bedskilled nursing facility, and a home health, hospiceand EMS—both emergent and convalescent—agency.<strong>Craig</strong>’s next career move was toParadise Valley <strong>Hospital</strong> in Phoenix, Arizona.He began his work at this 136-bed acute caremedical center as chief operating officer, waspromoted to interim chief executive officer,and then to chief executive officer. <strong>Craig</strong> wasone of many candidates who went through theextensive interview process to fill the positionof chief executive officer of <strong>Emory</strong> <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Creek</strong><strong>Hospital</strong>. Last spring, he was offered and acceptedthe position to lead this 110-bed facilitylocated on 65-acres in <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Creek</strong>. “I amvery happy to both be given the opportunity tolead this excellent facility into its future and tomove with my family to such a wonderful community,”said <strong>Craig</strong>. “Moving back to the Southbrings our family much closer to my family inGreenville, and we are all happy to be livingin the <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> area. This community hassuch an excellent quality of life and so much tooffer our family.”<strong>Craig</strong> and Pam have a daughter, Claire, who isnine-years-old and their son, Andrew, is sixyears-old.“When I’m not working at the hospital,”said <strong>Craig</strong>, “I spend every other minuteenjoying the time that I am able to spend withPam, Claire and Andrew.” Since moving to the<strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> area, the family has been attendingPerimeter Church, and mission work is apriority for the <strong>McCoy</strong>s. Last spring, Pam spenttwo weeks on a mission trip to Uganda, and Pamand <strong>Craig</strong> will continue to make as many tripsas possible. It is a priority for both of them toinclude Claire and Andrew in their mission tripsas they get older and to have the family makethese trips together. Though his busy scheduledoesn’t allow much time for it, <strong>Craig</strong> enjoysgolfing and hopes to get more play time in thenear future. He also looks forward to bringingAndrew and Claire along with him and giving17 CountyLine | September 2011

Claireand Andrew have started school, and the entirefamily is settling into their life in the <strong>Johns</strong><strong>Creek</strong> area. “This is such a fabulous area inwhich to raise a family,” <strong>Craig</strong> commented.“We are all happy to be here.”As <strong>Craig</strong> is busy working to continue the qualitycare that EJCH provides its patients, he isalso focusing on providing the community withthe knowledge and tools that address a varietyof health issues. “In continuing to do our bestfor the community, we are creating programsand resources for people to lead a healthierlifestyle,” said <strong>Craig</strong>. “By addressing specifichealth issues, we can provide people with informationthat they can use to prevent futureproblems.
