Welcome from Dr. Theresa MaldonadoDivision Director, Engineering Education and CentersNational Science FoundationWelcome to our 2012 Engineering Education and Centers (EEC) Division Awardees Roundtable.This meeting brings together principal investigators in the following programs and areas:· Innovations in Engineering Education, Curriculum, and Infrastructure (IEECI)· Research in Engineering Education (REE)· Research Initiation Grants in Engineering Education (RIGEE)· Engineering Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)· Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)· Faculty Early Career (CAREER)· Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) in Engineering· Engineering Research Centers (ERC)The primary purpose of this conference is to empower you, our grantees, to discover how toenable our education system to produce outstanding engineers cultivated from rich, broadbackgrounds. Here, you will share new ideas and results among a dynamic, dedicated, andgrowing community of researchers. My sincere hope is that you will return home to yourinstitutions with a renewed appreciation of the importance of the work you do, with newcontacts and partners to strengthen your research activities, and with fresh ideas that can benurtured into competitive proposals.Hence, fostering an environment that supports open dialog and transparency between usis critical to success. While you are here, take the opportunity to build community andpartnerships between NSF, other attendees, and yourself. I request your valuable feedback andideas to guide our thinking on new programs, on strategic directions, and on re-examining ourexisting programs. Numerous opportunities for dialog with NSF personnel are available duringthe meeting, and I am confident that the feedback you provide will help us better evaluatethe impact of the work we fund and continue to better serve the needs of the engineeringeducation community.Finally, this meeting provides an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments and reaffirm theimportance of our work. Well-trained and innovative engineers who can place their work in thecontext of national and global challenges are vital to our future.
