UVEXPOSUREUNITSLow Cost‘LV’ UV UnitsLow Cost UV UnitsThe steel cased LV models are the most cost effective UV unitsoffered. The tubes are in the base which means the artwork hasto be registered on the UV sensitive area and then placed facedown onto the exposure area. Coloured black, each unit has ahinged lid containing a pressure pad which, when the lid is heldclosed by the two retaining clips, acts to force the artwork andsensitive material firmly together on the UV illuminated area. Allcontrols are conveniently front mounted. The LV202-E has a sixminute mechanical timer which also acts as the mains switch.When the control knob is rotated to the required time the poweris turned on and the exposure commences. The timer clicks off assoon as the exposure is completed. The LV204 controls consist ofa 0-500 second digital timer that is set with touch keys. The settime counts down during exposure and then flashes to indicatethe exposure is complete. To perform an exposure, the artwork and UV sensitivematerial being exposed are placed on the precision exposure foampressure pad (fig1). The separate hinged frame containing 4mmglass is then lowered onto this foam pad. It hinges from the rearof the unit and induces a progressive contact line across the faceof the foam pad aiding the expulsion of air between the artworkand UV sensitive material (fig 2). The frame is secured with thetwo front mounting catches to achieve the necessary pressure forthe required artwork contact. When the frame is secured the finalposition and registration of the artwork is checked (fig 3) beforelowering the exposure head and commencing the exposure (fig 4).Exposure is controlled by a 0-500 second digital timer that is setvia touch keys. The set time counts down during exposure andflashes to indicate the exposure is complete. The tubes in theexposure head are screened with a special membrane whichprotects the operative from the potential hazards of live electricalparts. The foam exposure pad sits in a tray and can be easilyremoved for cleaning or quick installation of exposure trays fornon-contact curing. Vacuum UV UnitsFor the ultimate in reproduction definition, a vacuum unit has to be thechoice. Unlike the pressure pad units the AY series use a vacuum toensure the artwork and material to be exposed are held in perfectcontact. When fine tracks are required on a PCB or detailed definitionon a graphic reproduction, an AY vacuum unit should be chosen. All theAY units now feature the latest rubber blanket and glass vacuum systemfor the ultimate exposure resolution. The time is then set via the touchmembrane control panel and the start button pressed. This activates theintegral vacuum pump which removes the airfrom the chamberensuring perfectcontact betweenartwork andmaterial to beexposed. Onlywhen a vacuumhas beenachieved will thetubes activateand the exposurecommence. When completed the vacuum pump is turned off and a valve automatically releases the vacuum allowing the lidto be raised. The successful provendesign features self contained units each of which arefree standing and will accept boards up to 320 x 260mm(12.6" x 10.23"). Each unit is formed in two parts, thehigh density polypropylene inside tank being injectionmoulded as a single piece. This method of constructionhas proved to be far more efficient than the old methodof welding together several vacuum formed parts whichby design gives inherent danger of leaks from joins. Thisone piece design is an important safety feature whichshould be considered when choosing PCB tanks. Thisinside tank has an integral top surround, which securesover the second of the two parts, a rigid rotationallymoulded polyethylene outer case. A splash proof lid withfull length board holder mesh covers a working area of 5litre capacity. The board holders feature yellow side clipswhich can be secured to close the sides of the meshwhen very small boards are being processed.For added safety the inside tank is bolted to the outercase at the bottom of the unit. This must be removedbefore access to electrical components. Where applicable,the specially developed 500 watt heater with protectivesilica sheath is externally mounted in the tank, as is thethermostat sensor. The heater is fitted with an internalre-settable safety device to protect the tank if it isinadvertently turned on without any liquid in.
