COMPULSORY COURSESStudents in Grade 9 in all Simcoe County District <strong>School</strong> Board secondary schools will takethe following subjects, each worth one credit:English,French,Geography,Health <strong>and</strong> Physical Education,Mathematics,ScienceStudents will also select two additional Grade 9 credits from among those offered by the school.EnglishENG1DW: English, AcademicThis course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, <strong>and</strong> media literacy skills that students need forsuccess in their secondary school academic programs <strong>and</strong> in their daily lives. Students will analyse literary texts fromcontemporary <strong>and</strong> historical periods, interpret informational <strong>and</strong> graphic texts, <strong>and</strong> create oral, written, <strong>and</strong> media texts in avariety of forms. An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. The course isintended to prepare students for the Grade 10 academic English course, which leads to university or college preparationcourses in Grades 11 <strong>and</strong> 12.ENG1PW: English, AppliedThis course is designed to develop the key oral communication, reading, writing, <strong>and</strong> media literacy skills students need forsuccess in secondary school <strong>and</strong> daily life. Students will read, interpret, <strong>and</strong> create a variety of informational, literary, <strong>and</strong>graphic texts. An important focus will be on identifying <strong>and</strong> using appropriate strategies <strong>and</strong> processes to improve students’comprehension of texts <strong>and</strong> to help them communicate clearly <strong>and</strong> effectively. The course is intended to prepare students forthe Grade 10 applied English course, which leads to college or workplace preparation courses in Grades 11 <strong>and</strong> 12.ENG1LW: English, Locally DevelopedThis course emphasizes key reading, writing, oral communication, <strong>and</strong> thinking skills that students need for success insecondary school <strong>and</strong> their daily lives. In particular, the program works towards preparing students to enter the Grade 11Workplace preparation course in English, <strong>and</strong> to complete the Grade 10 Test of Reading <strong>and</strong> Writing skills successfully.Students may also use this course to strengthen skills toward pursuing English at the grade 9 applied level. Students read avariety of narrative <strong>and</strong> expository forms, poetry <strong>and</strong> drama <strong>and</strong> practice the skills necessary for clear <strong>and</strong> accurate spoken<strong>and</strong> written language. In particular, course activities will help develop confidence <strong>and</strong> self-esteem <strong>and</strong> provide motivation tosucceed in school <strong>and</strong> life.FrenchFEF1DW: Extended French, AcademicThis course emphasizes the expansion of students’ oral communication, reading, <strong>and</strong> writing skills through the study ofthemes that reflect their interests. Students will apply their knowledge of French in discussion, debates, dramatizations, <strong>and</strong>oral presentations. Students will read <strong>and</strong> write in a variety of genres (e.g. poems, articles, <strong>and</strong> brochures) <strong>and</strong> study at leastone short novel intended for a French-speaking audience.Students in the Grade 9 Extended French program will also take CGC1DF – Geographie du CanadaFSF1DW: Core French, AcademicThis course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading, <strong>and</strong> writing skills. Students will build on<strong>and</strong> apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such a relationships, trends, <strong>and</strong> careers. Thematicreadings, which include a selection of short stories, articles, <strong>and</strong> poems, will serve as stepping stones to oral <strong>and</strong> writtenactivities.FSF1PW: Core French, AppliedThis course emphasizes the further development of oral communication skills. Using the theme of media, the development oforal communication skills will be integrated with the development of reading <strong>and</strong> writing skills. Students will exp<strong>and</strong> theirability to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> speak French through conversations, discussions, <strong>and</strong> presentations. They will also read mediarelatedshort stories, articles, poems, <strong>and</strong> songs <strong>and</strong> write brief descriptions, letters, dialogues, <strong>and</strong> invitations.


ScienceSNC1DW: Science, AcademicThis course enables students to develop their underst<strong>and</strong>ing of basic concepts in biology, chemistry, earth <strong>and</strong> spacescience, <strong>and</strong> physics, <strong>and</strong> to relate science to technology, society, <strong>and</strong> the environment. Throughout the course, students willdevelop their skills in the processes of scientific investigation. Students will acquire an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of scientific theories<strong>and</strong> conduct investigations related to sustainable ecosystems; atomic <strong>and</strong> molecular structures <strong>and</strong> the properties ofelements <strong>and</strong> compounds; the study of the universe <strong>and</strong> its properties <strong>and</strong> components; <strong>and</strong> the principles of electricity.SNC1PW: Science, AppliedThis course enables students to develop their underst<strong>and</strong>ing of basic concepts in biology, chemistry, earth <strong>and</strong> spacescience, <strong>and</strong> physics, <strong>and</strong> to apply their knowledge of science to everyday situations. They are also given opportunities todevelop practical skills related to scientific investigation. Students will plan <strong>and</strong> conduct investigations into practical problems<strong>and</strong> issues related to the impact of human activity on ecosystems; the structure <strong>and</strong> properties of elements <strong>and</strong> compounds;space exploration <strong>and</strong> the components of the universe; <strong>and</strong> static <strong>and</strong> current electricity.SNC1LW: Science, Locally DevelopedThis course enables students to deepen their knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the basic concepts in biology, chemistry, earth<strong>and</strong> space science, <strong>and</strong> physics; develop practical skills in science investigation <strong>and</strong> to apply their knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills toeveryday situations. Students conduct investigations into practical problems <strong>and</strong> issues related to cells <strong>and</strong> reproduction; thestructure <strong>and</strong> properties of elements <strong>and</strong> compounds; static <strong>and</strong> current electricity; <strong>and</strong> astronomy <strong>and</strong> space exploration. Avariety of h<strong>and</strong>s-on activities assist students to acquire concepts. Students will use different reporting strategies to facilitatethe development of communications skills.OPTIONAL COURSESARTSADA1OW: Drama, OpenThis course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms <strong>and</strong> techniques, using material from a wide rangeof sources <strong>and</strong> cultures. Students will use the elements of drama to examine situations <strong>and</strong> issues that are relevant to theirlives. Students will create, perform, discuss, <strong>and</strong> analyse drama, <strong>and</strong> then reflect on the experiences to develop anunderst<strong>and</strong>ing of themselves, the art form, <strong>and</strong> the world around them.AMI1OW: Instrumental Music, B<strong>and</strong>, OpenWould you like to learn how to play a b<strong>and</strong> instrument, or do you already have some musical experience? This course gives you beginninginstruction along with the study of theory, listening <strong>and</strong> creative exercises.This course emphasizes the creation <strong>and</strong> performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience <strong>and</strong> is aimedat developing technique, sensitivity, <strong>and</strong> imagination. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative <strong>and</strong>critical analysis processes in composition, performance, <strong>and</strong> a range of reflective <strong>and</strong> analytical activities. BUSINESSBTT1OW: Information <strong>and</strong> Communication Technology in Business, OpenThis course introduces students to information <strong>and</strong> communication technology in a business environment <strong>and</strong> builds afoundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop wordprocessing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, <strong>and</strong> website design skills. Throughout thecourse, there is emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research <strong>and</strong> communication skills, <strong>and</strong> current issuesrelated to the impact of information <strong>and</strong> communication technology.LANGUAGESLVLADW: Latin, Classical Language, AcademicThis course introduces students to the achievements of the classical world through the study of Latin. Students will learnvocabulary <strong>and</strong> grammar essential for reading <strong>and</strong> translating classical texts. English is the language of instruction. Througha variety of enrichment activities, such as presentations, debates, <strong>and</strong> dialogues, students will explore such aspects of life inthe ancient world as trade, commerce, education, entertainment, <strong>and</strong> social customs while improving their language skillsLWSBDW: Spanish, International Language, AcademicThese courses are designed to enable students to begin to communicate with native speakers of Spanish. Students will usesimple language <strong>and</strong> read age-<strong>and</strong> language-appropriate passages for various purposes. They will explore aspects of theculture of countries where Spanish is spoken, including social customs <strong>and</strong> the arts, by participating in cultural events <strong>and</strong>activities involving both print <strong>and</strong> technological resourcesSOCIAL SCIENCEHIF1OW: Individual Family <strong>and</strong> Social Living, OpenThis course explores the challenges faced by all people: how to meet basic needs, how to relate to others, how to manageresources, <strong>and</strong> how to become responsible members of society. Students will learn about how families work <strong>and</strong> thediversity of families <strong>and</strong> societies, <strong>and</strong> will have opportunities to develop interpersonal skills, decision-making skills, <strong>and</strong>practical skills related to family <strong>and</strong> social issues in daily life. Students participate in both food <strong>and</strong> clothing labs.TECHNOLOGYThe following technology courses are offered in grade 9 as either two half-credit combinations or a fullcredit course. Please note that the half credit combinations are two separate units <strong>and</strong> must be selectedas packaged.Half Credit Packages:1. TGJ1OW: Exploring Communications Technology <strong>and</strong> Technological Design, OpenThis exploratory course introduces students to concepts <strong>and</strong> skills in communications technology, which encompassestelevision/video <strong>and</strong> movie production, radio <strong>and</strong> audio production, print <strong>and</strong> graphic communications, photography, <strong>and</strong>animation. Students will develop an awareness of related environmental <strong>and</strong> societal issues <strong>and</strong> will begin to exploresecondary <strong>and</strong> postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field.This exploratory course introduces students to concepts <strong>and</strong> skills related to technological design, which involves thedevelopment of solutions to various design challenges <strong>and</strong> the fabrication of models or prototypes of those solutions.Students will develop an awareness of related environmental <strong>and</strong> societal issues <strong>and</strong> will begin to explore secondary <strong>and</strong>postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field.


2. TMJ1OW: Exploring Manufacturing <strong>and</strong> Construction Technology, OpenThis exploratory course introduces students to concepts <strong>and</strong> skills related to manufacturing technology, whichencompasses technical drawing, properties <strong>and</strong> preparation of materials, manufacturing techniques, <strong>and</strong> control systems.Students will develop an awareness of related environmental <strong>and</strong> societal issues <strong>and</strong> will begin to explore secondary <strong>and</strong>postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field.This exploratory course introduces students to concepts <strong>and</strong> skills in construction technology, which encompassesplumbing, electrical wiring, masonry, heating/cooling, carpentry, <strong>and</strong> woodworking. Students will develop an awareness ofrelated environmental <strong>and</strong> societal issues <strong>and</strong> will begin to explore secondary <strong>and</strong> postsecondary pathways leading tocareers in the field.Full Credit <strong>Course</strong>:TIJ1OW: Exploring Technologies, OpenThis course enables students to further explore <strong>and</strong> develop technological knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills introduced in the elementaryscience <strong>and</strong> technology program. Students will be given the opportunity to design <strong>and</strong> create products <strong>and</strong>/or provideservices related to the various technological areas or industries, working with a variety of tools, equipment, <strong>and</strong> softwarecommonly used in industry. Students will develop an awareness of environmental <strong>and</strong> societal issues, <strong>and</strong> will begin toexplore secondary <strong>and</strong> postsecondary education <strong>and</strong> training pathways leading to careers in technology-related fields.Note: In addition, students will use the design process to solve open-ended problem solving processes through construction,computer, electronics <strong>and</strong> green industry technologies. Students will design <strong>and</strong> build (from locally harvested cedar <strong>and</strong> ashlumber) that will address challenges in sea <strong>and</strong> air transportation; communications; housing <strong>and</strong> power generation.TFJ1OW: Exploring Hospitality <strong>and</strong> Tourism, OpenThis exploratory course introduces students to concepts <strong>and</strong> skills related to hospitality <strong>and</strong> tourism, focusing on the areas offood h<strong>and</strong>ling, food preparation, the origins of foods, event planning, <strong>and</strong> local tourism. Students will develop an awarenessof related environmental <strong>and</strong> societal issues <strong>and</strong> will begin to explore secondary <strong>and</strong> postsecondary pathways leading tocareers in the field.Please note students may only select one technology package, although they may includeanother as an alternative selection on their option sheet.SPECIAL EDUCATIONTo meet the individual needs of our students, there are Special Education Resource teachers available to assist with theirprogram. The South Simcoe District Identification, Placement, <strong>and</strong> Review committee (I.P.R.C.) the school’s I.P.R.C.Committee, <strong>and</strong> the school’s Special Needs Committee (S.N.C.) assist the students, parents <strong>and</strong> teachers in the appropriateadjustments.<strong>Banting</strong>’s Special Education Department Leader will be meeting with parents of students who are currenlty on an IndividualEducation Plan, to assist with course selections <strong>and</strong> pathway planning.
