56 The SCROLL of Phi Delta Theta jor November, 1932Brother Cowles have under his leadershipbeen built into two of the most influentialand largest papers in the Middle West. Thebeautiful Register-Tribune building was, when built, the tallest structure in the stateof Iowa, although later buildings have exceededit in height. The two papers havethe largest circulation in Iowa and onlynine cities in the entire United States havea daily newspaper with a circulation as largeas that of the Register and Tribune.A unique record, indicative of the papers'place as leaders in the agricultural MiddleWest is seen in the fact that the combinedcirculation among farm subscribers is greaterthan that of any other daily newspaper inAmerica. The mail circulation is the largestof any standard daily newspaper in theworld. Another superlative is necessary todescribe the carrier salesmen's organization—also the largest in the world. This grouphas 4032 members, quite a bunch of newsboyswhen one stops to think of it!One of the most unique features aboutthe two Cowles-owned papers is their useof airplanes for the past four years for thegathering of news and pictures. At the presenttime they own and operate an autogyro, the "Good News III." The Register andTribune are the only papers west of theMississippi River, and with one exception, the only papers in America, using a plane ofthis type. Needless to say, it is an excellentadvertising feature for the papers.Director Cowles goes to the ReconstructionFinance Corporation well acquaintedwith banking problems. Until two years agohe had served for many years as a directorof the lowa-Des Moines National Bank andTrust Company and of the NorthwestBank corporation. Prior to his entry intothe newspaper field he had managed a chainof ten country banks in northern Iowa. Althoughhe fills the directorship made vacantby the resignation of General Dawes hewas not appointed to the presidency of thecorporation, another post that Dawes held.{Continued on fage 69]tttt^*^Cowles newspapers are energetic. This autogyro takes special editions of the "Register'' to various Iowa townswhen big news breaks, or when certain sections have special celebrations.
