Research into issues related to peace and conflict is spread through a number of different departments and research centres. The School of History and International Affairs runs a successful MA in Peace and Conflict studies at Magee and staff here have interests in areas that include peace and conflict theory, the Northern Ireland peace process, Cambodia, UN peacekeeping, and ethnic conflict. Also at Magee is the University of Ulster/UN University research centre called INCORE (Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity) which undertakes comparative research and policy work in the areas of ethnic, political and religious conflicts (see www.incore.ulst.ac.uk). At Coleraine there is a UNESCO Centre which focuses on education for pluralism, human rights and democracy, in local, national and international contexts. Important research into peace and conflict issues is also undertaken in the Schools of Law, Politics and Economics, and Social Policy. Full details are available on-line at www.ulster.ac.uk. One particular advantage that can arise from study at the University is that as we are based in a zone of ethnic conflict students have an opportunity for experiential learning into the impact of ethnic conflict on communities and can observe at first hand the unfolding of a peace process. Uppsala university is the oldest academic institution in the Nordic countries. It has today some 35,000 students, and over 5,000 PhD candidates. Peace, Democracy, and Human Rights is one of the university’s prioritized areas of research. The Department of Peace and Conflict Research has some 200 students, two Chairs and 10 Associate or other professor/researcher positions. It offers a complete undergraduate and PhD programme. Courses are given in English and Swedish on under-graduate as well as doctoral level. The Department offers in addition two Master’s programmes, one in International Studies, and the other in International Humanitarian Assistance. Research focuses on the origin, development and resolution of conflict, of which foremost is the the study of armed conflicts or conflicts that face the risk of becoming armed. Besides classical fields of peace research (such as the origins of war, and theories of conflict resolution), theories about security, mediation, peacebuilding, gender, and reconciliation are central in current research projects. Finally, the Department also holds some area expertise in conflict regions in Europe as well as South/South East Asia, West/Central Asia, West/Southern Africa, the Balkans, and Latin America.
Utrecht University has a long-standing tradition of research on conflict and violence at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and the Centre for Conflict Studies (CCS). The anthropology department‘s central research programme is called Political Conflict, Cultural Trauma, and Social Reconstruction (CTR). The CTR programme focuses on the multiple historical causes, repressive practices, traumatic consequences of political violence and their impact on problems of reconciliation and reconstruction in Latin America and the Caribbean. The conflict studies center CCS promotes interdisciplinary research and education in conflict studies and offers a MA Conflict Studies and Human Rights. It is linked to the School of Human Rights Research and the Research School for Resource Studies in Development (CERES). Both research schools offer PhD programmes. The CCS places emphasis on the critical analysis of the causes, dynamics and consequences of international and intrastate conflict. The Centre has a strong multidisciplinary profile and aims explicitly to combine the study of theoretical issues with in-depth case study material. Research projects focus on the local dynamics of conflict as well as problems related to international military and humanitarian intervention directed at the resolution of conflicts. The main areas of research include: post conflict governance, the role of diasporas, economies of war, and theories of conflict.
