elcome to all parents/carers and pupils.
I hope you find these newsletters helpful and informative. They are issued on
the last Friday of each half term and, with the exception of this first one of the year,
are sent via email and posted on the website.
Sport & PE
Inside this edition you will find an update of our sporting achievements so far this term.
Although we are no longer in a position to offer inter-school fixtures in rugby, it
remains a key part of our taught curriculum, with the addition of after school coaching
currently run by volunteers, for which we are extremely grateful. Our achievements in
other areas of school sport is going from strength to strength, as you will see from Mr
Edwards’ roundup inside. Preparations have just begun for the wide ranging interform
competitions which will begin in earnest after half term. Also included within is an
article from Mrs Crawford, our Sports Liaison Officer, about her work with our pupils.
The Arts
As I write, the finishing touches are underway for two trips to the West End in London
(The Lion King and War Horse) which are being organised by Mrs Hounsome and Ms
Crellin. These promise to be exciting and memorable cultural experiences for our young
people. In connection with the Arts, I should like to say well done to all pupils (and one
boy’s dad!) who participated in the Year 7 Music Showcase evening a couple of weeks
ago. There is clearly a tremendous range of artistic ability - singers, musicians and
dancers – in the current Year 7, and we are looking forward to seeing how they develop
their talents over the next few years.
Wider Curriculum Enrichment
I should like to thank Mr Mulholland for his co-ordination and oversight of the
enrichment activities that took place a couple of weeks ago. These activities happen at
different times throughout the year for different year groups and are an essential part
of our curriculum. They help pupils to understand more about themselves and the wider
world and so are very important in helping them become responsible young citizens.
End of Key Stage 3 Assessment Results
Inside you will see a summary of our 2012 results. They are very good and firmly place
us in the top 10% of schools nationally. Well done to last year’s year 9 pupils and their
teachers for these very creditable results.
11-16 Consultation
You will have seen a letter I issued to you recently saying that the governors, as a
follow through to our academy conversion last year, have decided to go to consultation
on whether we should become a school that takes in pupils in the age range 11-16. Our
working party of staff and governors who are looking at this issue will be meeting next
month to agree a timescale for consultation. You will be given full details of this by
Christmas. As mentioned in my earlier letter to you, this will be a full consultation with
all relevant stakeholders, both in school and in the wider community, and it will not be
rushed.
Working With Parents/Carers
Despite the fact that we have been graded outstanding by Ofsted, we have never been complacent about our successes. We are
always interested to hear your views about the school and how we might improve further. All of the examples below are
improvements brought about as a result of listening to suggestions from parents/carers through the various channels of
communication which we promote.
Healthy Lifestyles
A new information section about the canteen has been created on the website.
Discipline/Behaviour
We achieved an outstanding grade for behaviour in the last Ofsted inspection in 2010, and our standards have not dropped since
then. Our behaviour /discipline policy was reviewed last year in line with the new legal powers that schools now have. This new
policy can be viewed on our website at downloads/policies/discipline.
In connection with this, and following suggestions from parents/carers, we have amended our protocol regarding the allocation of
places on trips and educational visits. It can be viewed at downloads/policies/residential and educational visits.
Reporting Pupil Progress
The parents’ evening schedule has been modified to reduce the gap between the dates of the Yr 7 and Yr 8 parents’ evenings from
one year to the next. In addition, reports now contain a table linking KS3 levels to potential at GCSE.
General Links with Parents
A new and improved website was launched last year to improve communication and navigation through the site
We now have better promotion on the website of Sims Learning Gateway. See the remote access panel/SIMS Learning
Gateway section on our homepage which enables parents to have 24/7 access to all information held electronically about their child,
including information on behaviour, attendance, school reports and rewards
Increased focus on extending the links with Year 7 parents. This includes a recent and very successful parents’ workshop on
homework, and an additional “settling in” meeting which takes place in November with Form Tutors for those parents who requested it
A regular notice in each newsletter about the various means of contacting school with queries/concerns
Future Feedback
In addition to the ongoing informal communication we receive from parents/carers, we periodically issue a survey. The next one is
due to go out after half term. We do hope you can find the time to give us feedback on our strengths as well as areas where we might
consider further improvements.
Mrs Angela Edwards, Headteacher
17 th September 2012
When I became Chair of Governors, several years ago, we reported annually to parents in the form of our Annual
Report; changes in regulations and other avenues of communication have now replaced this Annual Report. The
governors believe that a shortened report, in the form of this letter, is still appropriate to communicate the
progress of the school.
Academy status. As an Outstanding School, were we eligible to apply for Academy status and converted
on 1 October 2011. I would emphasise that the School’s ethos, curriculum and admissions policy,
including special needs has not changed; the decision was made primarily to safeguard our current
outstanding status in these uncertain financial times. Whilst there have been additional or changed
responsibilities for the School and the Local Authority there has also been additional funding;
importantly however the education of our pupils has not been adversely impacted.
Results. This is probably the most visible and direct measure of the school’s performance. Our results
have consistently exceeded those at both national and Leicestershire level. The 2011/12 teacher
assessments announced prior to summer holidays show an even higher percentage of children
achieving the benchmark Level 5, (all subjects in the mid to high 90%),. What is more significant is
the increasing numbers attaining the higher grades continuing our exceptionally good results. Full
details are on the school website.
Finance. The funds to run the school as an Academy now come directly from the Government. Ofsted in
their 2010 report stated “Value for money is outstanding. The school is well maintained with finances
managed very efficiently”. The Finance Committee approves and monitors a school budget, which for
the first Academy period (11 months October to August) 2011/12 was approx 2.6 million, driven largely
by the number of pupils in the school. The expenditure is controlled by specific budgets for each area,
with termly reporting to Governors who approve Controls Assurance and Best Value statements
annually. As an Academy we are required to produce externally audited annual accounts.
Technology. The significant use of the technology within the School continues. Over the last year pupils’
reports became available on line, although a paper version will still be available. Homework is also
being made available on line, again with provision to ensure that any without access are not
disadvantaged. The School now has a wireless network which will enable greater flexibility in the use
of IT within the School
Future developments. Whilst an ‘Outstanding School’, there can be no room for complacency, the
Governors and the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) are continually looking for improvements,
including the proposed all weather pitch (for School and Community use).
Other sources of information I would encourage you to visit the school website http://
www.kibworthhigh.leics.sch.uk/ where most of the information resides along with links to other useful
sites.
I would encourage and welcome any feedback on this newsletter and remind you that the governors can be
contacted through the school on any issues of concern or suggestions for improvement in the School. Additionally
we shall endeavour to ensure that a governor is available on all parent evenings. The current governors, in
addition to the headteacher, Angela Edwards, are listed on the Website together with their area of responsibility.
We currently have vacancies for one Staff and two Community governors.
After many years, I am now stepping down as Chair, although I will remain a governor; I have every confidence in
Andy Munro, my replacement as Chair to continue the progress Kibworth has made over the years
This brief note is to advise Parents that we currently have vacancies for Governors and to
encourage parents to consider the position. Further details will be issued after half term.
The full governing body meets four times a year (generally starting at 6pm for two hours).
Each committee (governors are usually members of one or two) meets generally once a term
(another one to two hours). Naturally full training is provided with an introductory ‘Ready,
Steady, Govern’ course as well as other more specific training on areas of interest.
I appreciate that becoming a governor would represent an additional commitment of your spare
time but would encourage you to consider the position.
Should you wish to discuss becoming a governor, require more information or have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office.
Thank you for your time in considering this role.
Occasionally, pupils are given the option to have a non uniform day. In return, pupils are asked to donate a small fee
(usually £1.00), the proceeds of which go to fund raising efforts in which the school is currently involved. Children may like
to use their pocket money for this.
We do, however, insist that clothing should not be provocative and, therefore, appropriate for school, even if this means
going against current fashions - no short skirts/mini skirts or “short” shorts (eg hotpants or similar) and no revealing
cropped tops. Knee length or below knee length shorts are acceptable. Fancy dress is not allowed. Equally, clothing
should not display inappropriate or provocative or political slogans. Pupils should at all times dress with decency and
modesty; the Headteacher will have the final say in this matter.
Normal school policy on these days applies regarding jewellery, make-up/face paint and extreme hairstyles or dyed hair -
ie they are not allowed.
CHILDREN at a school in the Harborough area spent a day learning about democracy through an
interactive session organised by Harborough District Council.
Kibworth High is one of many schools that have taken part in The Young Citizens Panel, which takes
place every two months at a different middle or high school in the district.
It is a new system set up by the council to ensure that young people’s views are heard and these
views are fed back to the authority.
Children attending the sessions are able to quiz councillors.
The session on Friday focused on waste and recycling and officers designed a game to allow pupils
to see the change in the recycling system and allow them to have their say.
Cllr Blake Pain, who has responsibility for health and wellbeing, said: “The council is delighted that
Kibworth High School was able to participate in one of our Young Citizen Panel sessions. The views
of our young people are very important to us.”
Does your village have some connection to the Civil War, WW1 or
the Industrial Revolution?
Perhaps you know someone who lived through WW2 in the area, and
they could share a few memories with us. How has your area
changed over the years?
Do you know where your village name comes from?
You could even tell us about your school years or send us a copy of
an old photograph
The school History club are currently working on a project to find
out about the history of the local area. With Michael Wood’s
‘Story of England’ featuring Kibworth and Smeeton Westerby as
inspiration, we are trying to gather as much information about the
local area as possible. From Market Harborough to Wistow, Billsdon
to Oadby.
If you have any historical information about the local area, we
would be really appreciative if you could share it with us. You don’t
have to write a huge amount, even a few sentences will be great!
The information that we collect will be used by the History Club,
and some of it will be used for a wall display about local history.
Information regarding the History Club will be issued via the
Student Bulletin after half term.
For three weeks every year (one in September, one in March and one in June), the
normal timetable is suspended and the students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of
themed activities ranging from outer space to careers and enterprise. Here is a brief review of our
most recent Year 9 enrichment week (24 th to 28 th Enrichment week
September 2012).
Many of the Year 9s attended trips to Aberglaslyn in North Wales, to the World War 1 Battlefields of
Belgium or to northern France. The Year 9 Careers and Enterprise Week gave the students who were
not attending a residential trip the chance to explore their career options as well as developing job
related skills such as interview techniques, running a business and building up self confidence with
regard to body image.
One of the activities was run by the RAF Motivational Outreach team
who ran team work and physical activities in the drama studio.
Meanwhile, we were lucky to have Richard Egger from Go Motorsports
who brought in a rally car and informed the students about possible
careers in the motor industry. It was just a shame that the weather
was not good on that day so time outside with the car was limited.
Furthermore, we were delighted to see Georgia Twynham (author and
ex Kibworth Pupil) who ran a workshop for Year 9s about writing and
her work as an author. Moreover, Kelly Scott from the Teenage
Cancer Trust delivered an inspirational talk about her experiences of
overcoming cancer as a teenager and advice for students about how she coped.
The winning group on the year 9 enterprise
day
In a week of many highlights, one of the activities that appear to have
stood out is the Year 9 Enterprise Day whereby students have to work
in team in an Apprentice style environment to form a company and
produce a product which then has to be marketed to the business
leaders. This was a real chance for students to work in a more
business orientated environment and learn valuable skills in managing a
budget and presentation.
Students from all three year groups had the opportunity to take part
in the Young Citizen Panel (led by Stella Renwick) from Harborough
District Council. 33 Kibworth High School students took part on
Friday 28 th September 2012 and worked with Stella to address issues that affect young people in
South Leicestershire. This is part of an ongoing partnership to empower young people and give them the
skills and knowledge to be able to change things for the better in their local communities.
Overall, this was a highly successful week which gave students the opportunity to learn and to try new
things related to Careers and Enterprise. We hope to make it even better next year!
A s part of Kibworth High School’s autumn enrichment activities, year 8
students have the opportunity to sample the delights of multicultural links
that are on our door step in our cross curricular Spirit of Leicester trip. This
popular trip gives students an understanding of different religions and cultures
that make Leicester such a rich and diverse city. Students have a very warm
welcome on their visit to the Shree Ram Mandir Temple where they observe a
Hindu Arti Ceremony followed by an open question session.
They are taken to the nearby popular Belgrave Road for lunch at Bobby's, a pure
vegetarian Indian restaurant, where a traditional feast awaits. Pupils have a full
meal, sampling a number of dishes, including vegetable korma, tarka daal,
channa masala, bhatures, potato bhaji and barfi, to name but a few. For some
pupils it is the first time they have tried curries and traditional Hindu Indian
cuisine. Pupils really enjoy the delicious food and certainly go for seconds!
The day concludes with a spot of shopping, visiting the local traditional Indian
shops, soaking up a very different array of merchandise, sights, sounds and
smells.
Outstanding Exam Results
The end of Key Stage 3 results at Kibworth High School in 2012 follow the trend of recent
years being higher than the Leicestershire average in all subjects. Core subjects (Mathematics,
English and Science) results were pleasing with over 95% of students reaching level 5 – the
“benchmark” minimum for fourteen year olds nationally.
Previous years’ results in core subjects at Level 5+, 6+ and 7+ have been well above the national
average for both boys and girls, and once the national comparator data is in, we expect our
2012 results to follow the same pattern.
Please refer to our website for the actual results in each subject area. (Subject/Results pages
or the back page of the Prospectus)
Pupils Transferring from High to Upper School
Autumn Term 2012
Parents of Year 9 should have reserved a place for their child at an upper school by the 31
October 2012. If they fail to meet this deadline, and the school is full, a place may be
allocated to their child at a school which is in fact out of the catchment area. The date is the
same for Year 6 pupils transferring to the High School in September 2013.
School Fund
Education is expensive and we budget as carefully as we can. The School Fund helps to meet a
number of special initiatives that cannot be financed out of public funds. We hope for the
support of every parent/carer. We ask for a donation of £5 per family per year at the start of
the academic year. School Fund is used in a variety of ways which includes:
Subscriptions to a range of sports
Refreshments, prizes, decorations, hire of equipment
 Supplementary resources to departments
Administration of Medicines
(AS PER LOCAL AUTHORITY CODE OF PRACTICE)
No medicine can be administered to a pupil unless clear written instructions to do so have been
obtained from parents or carers.
Medicine should be brought in to school by parents/carers only not
pupils. Parents/carers will be required to complete a General Care
Plan (green form) giving permission to dispense and details of the
administration of the medicine.
All medicines must be stored in a locked cabinet accessed only by
designated members of staff. All medicines must be clearly labelled
with the child’s name, mode of administration (oral, etc.), dosage,
frequency and the name of medication being given. Parents/carers
must take responsibility to update the school of any changes to
administration or routine.
If a child has diabetes, a supply of glucose (gel, tablets, drink, food etc.) should be provided by
parents/carers and kept in school for treatment of hypoglycaemic attacks.
Page 13

Emergency Medication
*Please ensure that if your child has been prescribed an Inhaler or Epipen that they are
carrying it on them at all times.
We also feel that it is advisable for the school to hold a spare Epipen/Anapen, as in the event
of an emergency situation, staff may not be able to easily identify the pupil’s bag in time to
administer the Epipen/Anapen
*This age group is the worst for not carrying their medication with them, including during PE
(to the sports field). Failure to do so could prove fatal.
Emergency Closure Procedures
Each year we send out this information to inform you of what happens at our school in the event
of an emergency closure. This is usually due to extreme weather conditions, but could also be
due to security alerts, national emergencies, etc.
Weather Conditions
Kibworth High School serves a wide area of 170sq km and some pupils
live in remote places. From experience we know how quickly roads can
become impassable in bad weather, particularly in the east of the area.
Please may I remind parents that the final decision to send children to
school in snowy weather rests with them unless a school closure notice
has been issued. We expect the guidance issued by Leicestershire County Council to be followed
if the school remains open. This states that “if the bus is late, you should wait for 20 minutes
after the bus was due to arrive at the pick-up point…” We accept that bus companies must
decide if they should risk sending vehicles. It is very important to note that, in snowy weather,
if a bus company does not send a vehicle in the morning it will not send one in the evening. If
parents decide to bring their children to school in snowy weather they have to pick them up in
the afternoon at 3.00pm.
If you have any doubt please contact the passenger transport helpline 0116 3058777 at County
Hall.
If the weather seriously deteriorates during the day, we send for the buses and get the
children home whilst the roads are open. It is usually the case that we have been alerted by
anxious parents or by the bus companies themselves. We cannot take chances that later,
children could be stranded in remote places.
Page 14

Emergency Closures
If the decision is taken to close the school before the start of the day due to weather
conditions or another emergency, the information will be sent to Radio Leicester 104.9FM, in
accordance with Local Authority (LA) guidelines. You should tune into this radio station for
this information and regular updates. A school closures list can also be viewed via
www.bbc.co.uk/leicester (NB you need to refresh page regularly). From 7.15am onwards
messages will also be posted on our website and sent through our text messaging service. Please
note, the school will be closed to all pupils and staff and so we cannot accept any responsibility
for your child. You will need to have your childcare plans in place for such exceptional
circumstances. If we have to close the school during the course of the day for the same
reasons, it is important that you agree in advance with your child what they should do if they
are sent home early (e.g. stay at home, go to a relative/neighbour, etc.) Please see page 17 of
your child’s student planner. If there are any problems and we need to contact parents, please
ensure that we have your up to date phone numbers and contact details. Can I stress, these
situations may not arise, but it is as well to plan for them. A copy of this information may be
viewed via our website http://www.kibworthhigh.leics.sch.uk/parent/closure/emerg.htm
Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance is essential to progress at school. Our levels of attendance are
regularly monitored, and we are pleased to say that Kibworth High School has an excellent
record. In an effort to maintain this standard detailed below is the procedure for reporting an
absence from school or a late arrival.
Please telephone the school on the morning of each absence to inform the attendance clerk by
10am. The school attendance clerk will investigate any absences where a telephone call has not
been received to establish the whereabouts and safety of pupils. Our text messaging service
will inform parents/carers of their child’s absence.
In cases where pupils have more than a week off school, a note detailing the reason for absence
will be required. If we have not had a reason for an absence, a letter is sent automatically
asking for an explanation. If a reason is still not forthcoming, the absence will be recorded as
‘unauthorised’.
It would be extremely useful to have prior notice of dental/medical appointments which require
pupils to leave the school premises, and if pupils arrive late due to such appointments they
should be accompanied or have written notification. Where possible it would be helpful to have
a copy of dental/medical appointment cards or letters.
Family holidays should be avoided during term time because of the well documented negative
impact on a pupil’s learning. It is now the responsibility of the school to decide whether an
absence is to be classed as “authorised” or “unauthorised” and we are advised by the
Department For Education (DFE) that we should not authorise more than 10 days absence for
holidays or similar family activities in an academic year as it is very disruptive to a child’s
education.
Page 15

A holiday taken without authorisation will be recorded as unauthorised. A holiday request form
needs to be completed and authorised well in advance of a holiday being taken. Please ask your
child to collect one of these forms from the office. Holiday requests may be refused if your
child has a poor attendance record or if tests are taking place at the time of the holiday.
Your child’s attendance is monitored weekly. If attendance is less than 90%, parents will receive a
letter expressing concern. If the attendance level continues to fall, a second letter will be sent
asking for medical evidence of illnesses. For frequent unauthorised absences we will invite parents
in for a meeting. For continued unauthorised absences where medical evidence is not provided or
pupils refuse to attend school a fine will be issued by the Local Authority on recommendation by
the school and will result in a pupil’s place on any school trip being put in jeopardy.
Finally, we appreciate a certain amount of lateness is unavoidable where school buses are
concerned, but pupils must ensure that they complete a late arrival slip if they have been
marked late at registration. This also applies to afternoon registration, should pupils be late
because of lunchtime sporting activities etc. If this is unavoidable they must complete a blue
late slip at Reception.
Telephone Messages
If you need the school to convey a message (urgent messages only) to your child can you please
ensure that you contact the school office by 2.30pm. After this time it can not be guaranteed
that messages will be relayed.
A reminder to parents and carers, especially those new to the school, about our automated
telephone system. When you call the school on 0116 2792238 you will be given a list of options.
Safety Notice
As per our School Travel Plan the school have installed ‘Pupil Safety’ notices at both the Main
Car Park Entrance and the Sports Hall Car Park Entrance. These notices instruct parents that
U-turns should not be done in these areas. The School Travel Plan can be viewed on the school
website http://www.kibworthhigh.leics.sch.uk/downloads/ under the Information section. If
parents wish to pick up their children by car at the end of the school day, please can they do so
from the Sports Hall car park. This avoids congestion with the buses.
To All Parents Whose Children Use School Transport
It has come to our attention that some pupils are unaware of guidelines to follow in the event
that their school bus fails to arrive on time.
If a bus is late, pupils should wait for 20 minutes at the pick-up point – you should discuss now
with your child your options should their bus fail to turn up after this time. These options
include: travelling to school using public transport, travelling to school with a responsible adult
e.g. a parent or friend’s parent, or ringing the School Transport Helpline on Leicester 0116
3058777 who will arrange transport.
Could you please ensure that your child is aware of which option they should follow.
The school have been informed by the LA Passenger Transport unit that the fee for
replacement bus passes is £10. Please ensure that if your child has been issued with a contract
bus pass that they do not misplace it.
If you have any doubt please contact either the passenger transport helpline 0116 3058777 at
County Hall or the bus company on the following numbers:
Freezone
You may be aware that every lunchtime we operate a scheme called ‘Freezone’ in school. This is
where one of our computer rooms is opened to the pupils as a general workroom. A member of
staff is on hand to provide help and guidance if necessary.
The school’s pupil information management system (SIMS) collects and stores details about
your child which staff in school use to monitor aspects of attendance, progress and behaviour.
We are now able to give you an on-line view of some of this information taken directly from
SIMS. This would involve you using a computer connected to the internet to log into the SIMs
Learning Gateway
More details and the forms required to sign up to the SIMs Learning Gateway can be found on
the school website homepage in the Remote Access Panel, or can be obtained by contacting the
school using the email address slg@kibworthhigh.leics.sch.uk
Personal Accident Insurance for Pupils
SCHEME ARRANGED WITH ZURICH MUNICIPAL INSURANCE CO
It is often assumed by parents that if an accident occurs at school, the school can be held responsible
and that financial compensation will therefore be made. It cannot be emphasised too
strongly that the liability of the school is strictly limited to cases where there is proven evidence
of negligence.
In the vast majority of cases, the injuries sustained are minor and the circumstances of the accident
will reveal no evidence at all of negligence on the part of the school. There are, however,
some accidents which can have long term consequences or result in some form of permanent disability
but still without any evidence of negligence on the part of the school. The advantage of
a personal accident policy therefore, is that whilst in no way preventing further action to seek
damages in cases where negligence is alleged, payments under the policy are made on the basis
of the injuries sustained and are not conditional on proving liability.
In order to provide parents with the opportunity of arranging appropriate insurance cover at a
very competitive cost, the Local Authority has arranged a scheme with Zurich Municipal Insurance
Co. the policy runs from September to August of the ensuing year and provides cover for
24 hours a day, 365 days per year and so is not limited to when children are at school. If you
are interested in arranging such cover for your child, summary of cover sheets and application
forms can be obtained from the school. Completed forms should then be returned to the school
accompanied by a cheque for £12 made payable to Kibworth High School. Confirmation of
cover together with a copy of the supply policy will subsequently be forwarded to you by the
Children and Young People’s Service via the school.
Mobile Phones
The rules for mobile phones are outlined below:
1. Pupils are not allowed to bring mobile phones into school. The school will not
accept responsibility for damaged or missing phones.
2. Parents/carers who feel their child needs access to a mobile phone for a one
off emergency situation must request this in writing to the Headteacher. If the
request is granted, arrangements will be made regarding the pupil’s access to the phone. In
these exceptional circumstances we ask that the phone be handed in to the school office for
safe keeping.
3. In all other circumstances, if a pupil is found to have a mobile phone, it will be confiscated
and will only be returned when the parents/carers have made an appointment to collect it.
Page 19

Emergency contact between parents/carers and pupils during the school day:
1. Pupils must not use mobile phones to contact parents/carers during the school day and vice
versa
2. Permission from a teacher is required before a pupil will be allowed to contact parents/
carers. If it is deemed necessary, pupils will be allowed to contact home on the school land line
via the school reception
3. For all children’s safety, if parents/carers need to contact their child during the day this
should always be done through the school reception.
Parentpay
Please remember Parentpay. This is the web based site that can be used to make payments for
your child’s dinners, trips, music lessons, etc. If used to pay for dinners this avoids the queues
at break and lunchtime at the revaluation machines. If you have mislaid your password for the
system, please contact Mrs Swinn, Finance Assistant in the school office.
Information & Communication Technology Department
Kibworth High School pupils are renowned for achieving high standards and exhibiting talents
both in subject related work and in extra-curricular activities. We believe that such talents and
achievements, for example sporting endeavours, musical and drama events, exceptionally high
grades and competition winners, should be recognised and rewarded.
Many past pupils have had articles with group photographs included in the local press or have
been involved in professional safety film productions. We would like to continue to use images
of Kibworth High School pupils for future media productions, newsletter articles or local press
releases. This would not include using recognisable images of pupils on our website or the
Internet.
If you do not wish your child to be included in any such
opportunities, please can you inform us in writing at the
given address.
If you require any further information please contact
Mrs Bev Cuppelditch, Business Manager, at the school.
This week is National Identity Fraud Prevention Week where a number of organisations from the public and private
sector begin a month-long drive to help combat identity fraud in the UK [1st October 2012]
During this week Action Fraud is reminding you how to keep your identity safe with some simple tips:
Don’t throw out anything with your name, address or financial details without shredding it first.
Be careful about what information you share on social networking sites, and check your privacy settings.
Monitor your credit status by getting regular copies of your credit report from a credit reference agency.
Install anti-virus software and make sure it is kept up to date.
Regularly change your passwords and protect mobile devices with them.
 Never click on suspicious hyperlinks.
Look into any mail that does not arrive when you are expecting it.
The National Fraud Authority (NFA) who runs Action Fraud estimates that identity theft costs individuals a total of
£1.2 billion each year.
To read more about this, go to the Action Fraud web site:
This is a message to all Schools from Harborough Police.
Trick or treaters are being urged to think carefully about which
doors they knock on this Halloween.
Leicestershire Constabulary is reminding young people that whilst
Halloween can be a lot of fun, it can also be a distressing time for
more vulnerable members of the community such as the elderly.
Police have been distributing posters, which say ‘No thanks trick
or treaters’, to residents who don’t wish to be disturbed on
Halloween and are urging trick or treaters to respect the wishes
of any household displaying one of these posters.
Leicestershire Constabulary has the following advice for trick or
treaters:
1) Stay in groups when trick and treating.
2) Wear high visibility jackets so you can be seen.
3) Young children should be accompanied by adults.
4) Older children should have a planned route which should be
discussed with Parents, and keep in touch at intervals with your
nominated person to let them know your progress.
5) Arrange a time you should be expected home and therefore make
sure you are wearing a watch.
6) Make sure your route is well planned and also well lit. Have a torch
with you just in case.
7) Make sure you respect those who do not wish to be disturbed, they
will normally have a sign stating this.
8) Don't eat any items given to you until to get home and have shown
them to your parents, and don't accept a lift from anyone. Remember
it's always safety in numbers.
Page 22

Throwing things like eggs and flour can cause damage and upset. It
can also be classed as criminal damage, or even assault, so your ‘bit of
fun’ could end up with you in trouble with the police.
Chief Inspector Adam Streets said: “We don’t want to spoil
anyone’s fun at Halloween but we are asking trick or treaters to
be considerate and think of others, especially the elderly.
“We hope that by offering this advice we can reduce the number
of people who are subjected to incidents of anti-social behaviour
and prevent those that are intent on causing trouble from doing
so.”
On the KHS Website under ‘Notices’ is the printable two sided
poster (see below) for Halloween that has been produced by
Leicestershire Police. Show the red side if you don't welcome ‘trick or
treaters’ calling at your house or show the green side if you welcome
‘trick and treaters’ calling.
These are just some pointers to bear in mind in order to have a safe
and fun time.
Hope you all have a great Halloween.
ith the Olympic and Paralympics Games now a fond memory, it is now time to convert the
W enthusiasm and excitement created by the Games into school PE and extra-curricular activities.
We now have a photo of every Team-GB and Paralymics-GB medal winner displayed in the PE foyer to
hopefully inspire our pupils to strive to be the best they can be.
Paralympic Taster Day – In September, I took 2 year 8 pupils to Loughborough University for a
Paralympic Taster Day. This day had been set up to introduce pupils with physical disabilities to
alternative sports which they may not have tried. Both boys thoroughly enjoyed their day learning new
activities including table tennis, boccia, poly-bat and wheelchair basketball!
Loughborough University Links and our Olympic/Paralympic Legacy – as well as the above trip, Mrs
Edwards also took 2 pupils to a day’s conference at Loughborough University in July. Headteachers
from across Leicestershire and the City of Leicester attended along with 2 pupils from each of their
schools. They went to presentations and workshops and had a tour of the brilliant sports facilities.
Most of the extra curricular activities listed below have been planned as a result of our pupils’
suggestions from this day, so we are very grateful for their input.
Girls’ Active Lifestyle Sessions – The GALS initiative has been running for the past 2 years at KHS.
This scheme is being run across all high and upper schools within Blaby and Harborough with the aim of
giving girls opportunities to try activities which we do not offer within curriculum time. These activities
are often fitness style classes lead by coaches and instructors from the local community. Linking with
instructors in this way means that if girls enjoy a particular session, they are able to continue that
activity outside of school. Starting after half term, selected year 8 girls will experience new activities
including Zumba, Pilates, Skipping, Ultimate, Cheerleading, Karate and Street Dance.
Young Leaders – Unfortunately the miserable weather at the end of last term led to the cancellation of
all of the primary school sports days that our leaders were due to attend. Starting after half term, our
year 9 Young Leaders will be running a series of lunchtime table tennis and pool sessions which will
initially be offered to year 7 pupils. As table tennis is a new activity to many of the year 9 pupils, we
recently had a local coach deliver a session to teach the leaders the basics.
Y7 Boys’ Tennis – We have now had 4 successful lunchtime sessions of year 7 boys’ tennis which is
being run in collaboration with Kibworth Tennis Club. As there was a much larger demand than
expected, we have now set up an after school session on a Wednesday for year 7 boys who are
beginners or have not played much tennis before. Letters were given to pupils on Wednesday 17 th
October and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please note, reply slips need to
be returned to Kibworth Tennis Club, not KHS.
YEAR 7
After lots of trials in the first 3 weeks of term, the following boys were successful in being
selected for the Year 7 Boys Football Squad:-
Ethan Dawe, Ollie Lewis, Charlie Wollerson (Capt), James Wyche, Joey Caravelli, Harry Allen,
Freddie Robinson, Harry Pounds, Tim Gormon-Powell, Isaac Lakin, Joel Busby-Powell, Harry
Jones, Ollie Gilbert, Jake Fromont, Fraser Williams
So far this is their record:-
Played 4 Won 4 Scored 31 Conceded 2
It has been a fantastic start to the season for the Year 7 squad, unbeaten in their first 4
matches. Three South Leicestershire League matches have seen them beat South Wigston
10-0, Bushloe 8-1 and Gartree 4-1. In the second round of the National Cup having been given
a bye in round 1they travelled to Coventry and beat Bishop Ullathorne Catholic College 9-0.
After half term they have 2 South Leicester League matches at home to Thomas Estley
(Broughton Astley) and away to Welland Park.
Also in the 2nd round of the County Cup they will play Uppingham College at home and we are
waiting to see their opponents in the 3rd round of the National Cup.
Mr Murphy and I, who have both seen a lot of very good teams pass through Kibworth, are very
excited about the potential that this team has shown already and they can only get better......
Watch this space!
Page 25

YEAR 8
Squad:-
Kieran Ashman, Joe Boddy, Jed Acton, Ollie Foster-Pollard, Alex Rose, Tom Fielding (Capt),
Will Blackburn, Ben Knight, Ben Di Salvo, Cieran Hill, Josh King, Ben Parkinson, Matt Donahey
Played 5 Won 4 Scored 26 Conceded 3
The Year 8 squad did not have the start to the season they wanted in the 1st round of the
County Cup away at English Martyrs (Leicester). Leading comfortably 2-0 at half time the
boys pressed the self destruct button and lost 3-2.
However, since then they are unbeaten , beating South Wigston 5-0 and Gartree 6-0 in the
South Leicester League and then 2 National Cup matches—Harris School from Rugby 7-0 and
John Henry Newman from Birmingham 5-1.
After half term they face both Thomas Estley and Welland Park in the South Leicester League
and wait to see who their next opponents are in the National Cup.
YEAR 9
Squad :-
Ben Perkins, Dan Bray, James Bonser, Scott Haines, Tom Rawlins, Jack Tebbutt-Smith, James
Milsom, Matt Brown (Capt), Jack Langton, Oscar Trier, Elliott Coe, Ivan Tapper, Ben Fisher,
Jack Starkie, James Mason
This has been a very encouraging start for a team who has been too inconsistent over Year 7 &
8.
Played 4 Won 3 Lost 1 Scored 14 Conceded 5
Three wins on the bounce, one South Leicester league game Gartree 5-1, one County Cup De
Lisle 6-0 and one National Cup Bishop Stapford (Kettering) 2-1 made Mr Mulholland and Mr
Edwards very pleased, not just because they won but because of the good football and hard
work they produced. On Monday 15th October the boys lost at home 3-1 to Nicholas
Chamberlaine from Bedworth in the National Cup. Unfortunately it was the teams worst
display of the season so far but they lost to the better team who are 2 years in a row
Warwickshire County Champions.
After half term they face Thomas Estley at home and Welland Park away in the South
Leicester league and Roundhill (Thurmaston) away in the second round of the County Cup.
Page 26

South Leicester League
Kibworth have had yet another great start to the Netball season. Our
south Leicester fixtures have all been successful. These include South
Wigston, Bushloe (Y9’s yet to play), Gartree and Lutterworth. Having
won all of our league games in all three years I have high hopes for future
matches and competitions. Following half term we have Welland
park and Thomas Estley still to play.
Central venue League
The Y8 and Y9 Netball teams have entered the central venue county
league this year and have both progressed to the county finals. Both
year groups were undefeated in all league round matches and have it to
their finals.
