<strong>Faraday</strong> <strong>Isolators</strong>Advantages of <strong>Faraday</strong> <strong>Isolators</strong><strong>Isolators</strong>High Isolation<strong>The</strong> properties of the <strong>Faraday</strong> isolatorare determined by the quality of theoptical elements and the uniformity ofthe magnetic field. <strong>The</strong> entrance and exitpolarizers exhibit a very high extinctionratio, so that the isolation is mainlylimited by inhomogenities in the crystalmaterial. Specially selected crystalmaterials with a high Verdet constantcombined with permanent magnets witha high remanence enable us to useshorter crystals and obtain an isolation> 30 dB.<strong>The</strong> radiation blocked by the entranceand exit polarizers is not absorbedinternally, but is deflected by 90° withrespect to the beam direction. <strong>Faraday</strong> <strong>Isolators</strong>Single Stage <strong>Faraday</strong> <strong>Isolators</strong><strong>Isolators</strong>Technical OverviewIntroduction<strong>The</strong> compact <strong>Faraday</strong> isolators in thischapter use a single stage rotator. <strong>The</strong>length is kept to a minimum with the useof powerful permanent magnets in anoptimized geometry. A 360° rotation ofthe exit polarizer provides a maximumextinction over a certain range aroundthe central wavelength. <strong>The</strong> entranceand exit polarizers are polarizing beamsplitter cubes. <strong>The</strong> blocked radiation isdiverted by 90° and is readily availablefor other applications. At 30 dB, thespecification of the isolator is sufficientfor most standard applications. Forspecialized applications, selectedisolators with an extinction up to 45 dBare available.An even higher extinction is provided bythe two stage isolator series.Wavelength tuning<strong>The</strong> Verdet constant of the TGG crystal isdependent upon wavelength andtemperature. In order to compensate fordifferent temperatures or differentwavelengths, it is possible to tune theisolator in order to achieve maximumextinction. Tuning the isolator isaccomplished by rotating the holder ofthe exit polarizer with respect to anengraved angular scale.Reduction of transmission T(Δλ) [%]Tuning of design wavelength Δλ<strong>The</strong> graph shows the typical reductionfactor of the transmission (Δλ) that is dueto the tuning of the isolator to awavelength λ that is different from thedesign wavelength λ 0. <strong>The</strong> bar has alength that covers the wavelength rangefor which 0.95 < T(Δλ) < 1. <strong>The</strong> bulletindicates the design wavelength λ 0. <strong>The</strong>overall transmission of a <strong>Faraday</strong> isolatoris equal to T t= T 0x T(Δλ), where T 0is afactor that represents the transmission ofthe polarizers. At the design wavelengththe overall transmission of the <strong>Faraday</strong>isolator is λ 0> 90 %Broadband optionOn Broadband (BB) models the isolationis improved over a broadband spectrumby compensating rotational dispersion ofthe TGG. Precisionmechanics allow a continuous adjustmentof the interaction between themagnetic field and the TGG crystalwithout moving any optical components.It is possible to set the rotation angle toany value between 0° to 45° within thewavelength range in order to study theeffects of varying degrees of feedback.Easy access to the blocked beam isprovided by polarizing beam splittercubes, which divert the blocked beam by90°.Precision mechanics allow the exactreproduction of adjustments previouslyestablished. Two Stage <strong>Faraday</strong> <strong>Isolators</strong>Technical OverviewFI-x-5TI and FI-x-5TVDiode lasers are extremely sensitive toreflected radiation. Standard <strong>Faraday</strong>isolators typically achieve between 30dBand 40 dB isolation, which in some casesis not sufficient to suppress undesirablefeedback.Our two stage <strong>Faraday</strong> isolators weredeveloped for the special requirementsof diode lasers and square the standardisolation of single stage <strong>Faraday</strong>isolators. At the heart of this developmentis the use of two coupled isolatorstages together with the best polarizersavailable on the market.This configuration combines the exitpolarizer of the first stage with the entrypolarizer of the second stage to formone central polarizer.Arranging the polarity of the twomagnets to be opposite to each otherresults in two benefits: <strong>The</strong> polarizationdirection of the transmitted light remainsunchanged in the transmission directionand the effect of both magnetic fields isenhanced. <strong>The</strong>refore this configurationalso leads to a more compact isolatorand a reduction of the optical pathlength which in turn enhances theoptical quality of the <strong>Faraday</strong> isolator.All optical surfaces are antireflectioncoated and the surfaces normal to thebeam axis are tilted. <strong>The</strong> polarizers aremounted in a way that allows easycleaning of the external optical surfaces.This guarantees that the isolation is notreduced by residual reflections andscattering from the isolator.Based on this special design a guaranteed60 dB isolation at the designwavelength, respectively within theadjustment range of ±10 nm, makesLinos two stage <strong>Faraday</strong> isolators thebest on the market.DLI, Overview<strong>The</strong> isolators of the DLI-series weredeveloped for the special requirementsof diode lasers in the visible spectrumand combine the outstanding isolationof a two stage isolator with the flexibilityof a tunable isolator.<strong>The</strong> DLI isolators are easily integratedinto an existing setup and can beadjusted to match any wavelengthwithout changing the laser polarizationor displacing the laser beam. <strong>The</strong>isolators can be coarsely tuned byaltering the effective magnetic field inthe two isolator stages. A precisewavelength adjustment is possible byrotating the central polarizer with amicrometer set screw. <strong>The</strong> blockedradiation is deflected out of the isolatorat 90° with respect to the beam axis. It isnot absorbed by the interior of theisolator, but is available at the sidesurfaces of the polarizer and the exitwindow.DLI Injection Locking<strong>The</strong> DLI injection version revolves thisoperating mode and uses the exitwindow for in-coupling of the seed laserfor injection locking while decouplingefficiently the master and the slave laserfrom each other at the same time.
