Paddling to adventureTeaching outdoor education in the UKneeds a comfortable and trustworthywaterproof system – Páramo fits thebill perfectly. Open canoe coachingand expeditions now make up thebulk of my work, and my Páramocomes too. Not specifically designedas paddling wear, it is nonethelessmy first choice of clothing apart fromin the very worst of winter whentrousers with waterproof feet are dugout to ensure my feet keep dry too;the rest of the time it’s Aspira Trousers,Aspira Smock for colder days and VelezAdventure Light for milder ones. There’s a saying in Scotland, whereI live and work, that you get fourseasons in one day – often veryaccurate, making a versatile clothingsystem essential. Plus versatile clothingsuits this versatile craft – open canoesare equally suitable for gliding throughflat calm lochs, sailing when the windgets up and dancing on white water. One day or multi day, the journeyis what inspires me most. Althoughboating takes up the majority ofmy working life, I love to get intothe mountains too. Scotland hasadventures galore to offer, and my favouritejourneys use canoes to access the mountains, the North West Highlands having some of thebest. Enjoying the wilderness of Loch Shiel orheading down the River Spey to the sea – bothinspire me with their combination of weather, travelling companions and the beauty of theirsurroundings. Adventure isn’t just about thedestination, it’s much more about the journey– for me, I love the balance between travellingand simply stopping to soak it all in.Over the years I’ve convinced many openboaters that Páramo is the most comfortable, most weatherproof and longest lastingwaterproof system on the market. Open boatersmake up a small number of the population, but despite a market flooded (excuse the pun)with paddling specific clothing, there’s a highpercentage of us whose first choice is Páramo.Anna SibbaldMinimalism on a motorbike!Page 14I stop for petrol in Bolivia and asexpected my motorcycle with boxesattached encourages a local to ask,“Hey, what do you have in thoseboxes?” I convey in Spanish that I’mtravelling and living on this bike. I’mcarrying spare parts, tools, campingand photography equipment and, ohyeah, clothes. Travelling by motorcyclehas made me a minimalist. Every pieceof gear has to perform and preferablybe multi-functional; a fleece mid-layerkeeps me warm on chilly evenings anddoubles as a pillow.I’ve been on the road now for twoyears, covering over 70,000 kmsbetween Chicago and Nairobi. I’mhalfway through my trip, with a goalof reaching my home country of Indiaby the end of 2013. Some gear thatI started the trip with was startingto fail and in my search for outdoorgear, I was led to Páramo. Studyingfor a distance masters in SustainableDevelopment during my trip, I waspleased to see the high value Páramoplaces on ethical issues and their driveto achieve sustainability.Besides their highly functional gear, the facet of Páramo that attractedme most was their ethical productionfacility in Bogotá. At the MiquelinaFoundation, high-tech outdoor gear ismanufactured by women who’ve beengiven a second chance in life. Thispartnership has allowed Miquelinato make a positive impact in theircommunity, driven by a strong partnerin Páramo. When I passed throughColombia, I visited the local office ofChildren International in Cartagena,as I sponsor a child through themand wanted to see how things weregoing. Families were living in povertybut knew they could make progresswith their lifeline; their sponsor. There are many people around theworld who could use a little lifelineand choosing to support a companylike Páramo makes possible lifelinesto be thrown out in the sea of despairthat slowly changes it into a sea ofhope. The ladies at Miquelina havebeen given a self-esteem boostwith a secure job and their effortsare put back into their community, multiplying the positive effect whenPáramo products are used to exploreour world.Jay KannaiyanThe trek was awesome!Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t justlovely views, people and meals. It washard work, the first day was hottest at36°C but the coolest day was still 31!The longest day’s walk covered19km but our group made every dayfly by. We’re already planning nextyear’s trek together. Photos can’tconvey the impressive views or thegenuine hospitality of the peoplein the Berber villages en route andthe kindness of our two guides and‘cook’. Breakfast was porridge, everylunchtime we’d sit down in the shadeof the nearest tree for a wonderfuland ornate salad, evening meal wasalways a tagine, chicken, fish, beef andmutton, deliciously spiced and mouthwateringlytender. The guides werefantastic – despite the language barrierwe’ll be friends for many years. With Páramo’s help, we completedthe trek not only in one piece butin extremely good condition! Theequipment used exceeded our wildestexpectations, performing flawlessly.Ian BakerTrekking in aid of Help for Heroes

In 2008 my husband and Idecided to raise £5000 to traina Guide Dog puppy. We settled onwalking the last 200 miles of Caminode Santiago, the old pilgrim route inNorthern Spain. We did it and reachedour target. It gave me the bug and Ifelt I had unfinished business, so inAugust 2011 we set off again, thistime from Roncesvalles at the foot ofthe Pyrenees, aiming to walk the whole550 miles of the Camino to Santiagode Compostela and on to Finisterre, again to raise £5000. The trip was notwithout problems, our walking polesdisappeared before we even started, and the heat was intense. Covering20 miles a day, we were grateful for abed in the refuges along the way – itcertainly takes you out of your comfortzone, sharing a mixed dormitory withup to 100 strangers! Our prioritieswere basic – a bed, hopefully a hotshower, food and plenty of water.Camino challengeWe experienced aches and pains, blisters and insect bites, but nothingwe couldn’t cope with. We enjoyedmeeting people from many countries, all with their own reasons for walking– religious, spiritual, physical challenge– but with the common goal of theCathedral in Santiago. The peace andtranquillity there is something youcan’t explain.Sadly, 2 weeks and 200 miles in, abereavement forced us to curtail ourchallenge. Disappointing, but in 2012we’ll restart our trek at the foot ofthe Pyrenees again. I never wantedto do this in stages, as aside fromsponsorship, to complete this is apersonal challenge. At home I relyon Izzy, my trusty guide dog – onthe Camino, my husband is my eyes. Not only am I registered blind, I haveLupus, which for a few years renderedme incapable of walking any distance.Páramoia not paranoia! The first time I used my Páramogear was last year in Tasmaniaat the Adventure Racing WorldChampionships. Our team captain,Nick Gracie, had given the gear glowingreports but because I get very cold inraces I had my doubts. Tasmania wasmuch colder than I expected so thePáramo gear got a good work out.All our paddling was in freezing coldwater using “sit-on-top” boats.Page 16For the first paddle I used my normalpaddling jacket and tights whichnormally is enough. How wrong Iwas! For the last hour I was absolutelyfreezing and it took a long time towarm up after finishing the leg. Fromthat point on for every paddle I donnedmy full Páramo suit (Smock andTrousers) and as a result was warm astoast. At transitions people commentedon how good we looked compared toother teams that were freezing. We also had to swim in 13°Cwater which is usually extremelyuncomfortable. We had decidedagainst wearing our jackets in order tokeep them dry but we were so cold wehad to use them. Instantly we warmedThis is my way of not lettingthe disease get the better of me.On the Camino there’s a tradition ofplacing a stone from home at Ferrode Cruz. Sadly we didn’t reach thispoint. I’d taken 6 stones, my 3 year oldgranddaughter insisting I take one formy 3 grown-up children, for her ANDher teddy!! I couldn’t face carryingthem home, so found a waymarkerand left them at the foot in an arrowshape. In 2012 I’ll be checking if myarrow is still there...Our Páramo jackets were perfect, keeping us warm and dry on coldermornings and evenings and duringthe showers we encountered– much better than traditionalwaterproofs whichstick to your skinand makes you hotand sweaty.HelenMcCannup and started to feel better again. We were amazed that the jacketmaterial dried so quickly. During darkzones I am usually too cold to sleep. However, because I was so warm inmy Páramo gear I felt like we hadonly been asleep 2 hours when it hadactually been about 8 hours. The Páramo gear, complementing ouradidas TERREX kit and shoes, is thebest gear that I have ever raced in.I used to be very paranoidabout cold races butPáramo has given me anew found confidence. Thanks guys!Sonya Clark, WorldAdventure RacingChampionships2011, Tasmaniaheart of BorneoThe Heart of Borneo Project’sMurung Raya Expedition was oneof the largest, most innovativeexpeditions of recent years –2 months exploring, researchingand documenting unstudiedrainforest in the very centre ofthe island of Borneo – 400kmfrom the coast, one of the mostremote areas of the planet. We were working inside the Heart ofBorneo rainforest, the single largeststretch of rainforest left standing inSouth East Asia, and one of the mostbiodiverse ecosystems on earth. Thisunique habitat is under immediatethreat from logging and miningactivity, so our work there is extremelyimportant for its future conservation. Thanks to our generous sponsors, wewere able to do so much more thansimply collect vital data. We created aninteractive expedition by filming andphotographing everything, to uploadon our website via satellite every fewdays, allowing people all over the worldto follow us in real time, and ask usquestions we could respond to. The aimwas to help conserve this rainforestby combining science and media todiscover, educate, and inspire. We even took part in two live videolinks with audiences at London’sNatural History Museum – fromthe depths of completely unstudiedrainforest on the other side of theworld, so remote it had taken ourteam over 3 weeks to get to!That same day we were joined at ourcamp by two guest researchers fromGermany. Our team were kitted out inPáramo clothing ready for the eventwhen Jan and Carsten arrived. We’dbeen wearing this kit day in, day outfor over 2 months by that point, butit still felt like we were putting on our‘smarts’ for the camera! One of the firstthings the two new guys said was howwell kept we seemed after such a longtime living and working in the field! The rainforest is an extremely testingenvironment, one of the toughest inthe world to work in. You needn’t worrytoo much about venomous snakesand poisonous spiders – the rainforestbreaks you down, slowly, constantly. It’s a war of attrition that you aredestined to lose, and your only lineof defence apart from strict personalhygiene is your clothing.Day in, day out, for 2 months in thefield and 4 weeks either side, our teamwore Páramo’s Directional Clothing. Ithad to withstand the rigours of soaringtemperatures and UV rays, 100%humidity, torrential rainfall, not tomention the constant barrage of abusefrom spiny lianas, tree climbing, rivercrossings, plus rivers and rivers of sweat! Now we’re back, my Páramo clothinghas been washed and packed away, ready for our next expedition. Forcomfort, durability, and phenomenalfast drying ability, I wouldn’t risk takinganything else.Martin Holland, Project leader

French Alps 2011Paths, patrols, cabins and counting!Report from ProAves, Colombia – September 2011In summer 1990, I enjoyed a climbingholiday based at Ailefroide, a smallvillage in the Ecrins region of theFrench Alps. I promised myself I’dreturn the following year. But ‘thingshappen’ and my return wasn’t until2011, twenty years later. The villagehad not changed much, just a fewmore shops – but in the mountainsI was shocked with the distancethe glaciers had retreated – theGlacier Blanc by hundreds of metressince 1990.Our first objective was the ascent ofthe highest peak in the region, theBarre des Ecrins. We decided againstthe normal route in favour of themore interesting looking couloir, theBarre Noire. We bivouaced on the glacier side and, after little sleep, rose at 3am, settingoff into the dark, along and over theglacier towards our route. Once wesurmounted the bergschrund and gotinto the couloir, we found it very icyand out of condition. Although Alexhad two axes, Henry and I had onlyone each and so, erring on the sideof safety, rather than climbing in fastalpine style we tackled it in individualpitches of about 100 feet each –some 10 pitches in all.Although we made a mistake in nottaking two axes each, we had at leastgot the right clothing. Each of us hada Fuera smock – incredibly light, verybreathable and well designed. Henrywas very pleased he had taken hisGilet and wore this over his outerclothing whilst waiting on a coldbelay stance. It kept him warm duringthe bivouac too. He thought it one ofthe best pieces of kit he’d ever had.Although it took longer than wewould have liked, we finished theclimb and then just had to thinkof the best route down the 4000mmountain. The following day werested up to plan our next adventure.Simon BoyleShopping for KiliWith the prospect of climbing Mount Kilimanjaroin June 2010, I was not only faced with a physicalchallenge but also an organisational one.I had no trekking or climbing gearat all. I started my shopping early tomake sure I did not miss anything.I visited all the mountain shops inCovent Garden buying boots, shoes,day-packs, duffle bags and more.I was, however, disappointed by thequality of clothes in the big shops.Heading back to the tube, I noticed asmall shop...”PÁRAMO” and thought“may as well try it”. Walking in I wasgreeted by friendly and, importantly, knowledgeable staff. I had a millionquestions and the sales attendantwas happy to spend time with meand helped a lot. I walked out withjackets, baselayer Zip Neck Tshirts, fleeces, trousers, and towels (I wasbuying for 2).At first I was a little sceptical aboutthe small amount and low weight ofstuff I’d bought, thinking “I’ll end upfreezing up there or just won’t haveenough stuff”. But I was astonishedat how comfortable I was duringmy 7-day trek to Uhuru Peak. I waswarm, lightweight, and comfortablethroughout my whole trip!Thank you Páramo!!Next trip: Vietnam 12 day tour.Next stop: Páramo Covent Garden.Leonardo BarbagalloObjective: to use the World LandTrust donated Olympus cameras todocument daily activities performedby forest guards, Robert Garcia andCarlos Lopez, working to protect andconserve the ProAves nature reserveEl Pangan, Colombia. However, due to heavy rain, therewere many occasions when we werenot able to use the camera!Arrival of Páramo clothingThanks to Páramo, each of theforest guards at El Pangan receiveddesperately needed new trousers, shirts and a waterproof jacket.Page 18Trail maintenanceEl Pangan’s numerous trails allowvisitors and workers to access thereserve. Trail maintenance is crucialfor the protection of the reserve aswell as the visitor experience. Due tonearly constant rain last September, many landslides and tree falls meantlots of trail clearing work.ReserveboundarypatrolsOccasionally conflicts arise betweenEl Pangan reserve and its neighbourswith evidence of trespassers andillegal loggers. So routine boundarypatrols on a daily basis are crucialto protect the natural resources.Conversations with local peoplealso help - educating people aboutthe reserve’s mission and why it’snecessary to avoid unsustainableactivities. Increased patrols havereduced problems such as the illegalremoval of trees.Cabin maintenanceAs well as performing routineboundary patrols and trailmaintenance, we’re responsible forcleaning and upkeep of the eco-cabinsand eco-centre and maintenance ofthe small hydroelectric generator.Research & RescueThe cameras are also used to registerspecies found in El Pangan, amongother things:• Recording local animals – analysisof tracks as well as sightings;• Generating data about the differentspecies of birds – especiallyhummingbirds – using the feedersoutside the eco-cabins.Photographs record the release of atwo-toed sloth (choloepus hoffmanii),rescued by local police. After a healthassessment, the sloth was fine forrelease back into the wild. Our new Páramo keeps us morecomfortable when carrying out all ourtasks – and helps the ProAves reserveto continue to conserve the rainforestand its species.

Inspired by naturePage 20A Páramo weddingwith a view of the Cuillins!Tina and I had mountaineered togetherfor years. We agreed we’d get marriedonce Tina had completed her Munros, but the challenge then was to finda suitable venue and willing priest. An Alpine Club meet in Coruisk Hutlast year provided the dream locationwhen fellow AC member and Oxfordpriest Andrew Moore agreed toofficiate. Initial thoughts were tohold the ceremony on Sgurr na Stri, agranite shoulder buttressing the Cuillinhorseshoe and overlooking LochsCoruisk and Scavaig. The wedding was scheduled forWednesday and we arrived at Elgolthe Saturday before to get the ferryin, but the wind was picking up withstorms coming in and the forecast forthe worst day on Wednesday. A recceof Sgurr na Stri in pouring rain was apleasant outing for those in Páramogear, but wading the River Scavaiglooked serious as the stepping stonesdisappeared under the rising torrent. Our fall-back plan of holding theceremony on the shore of Lock Coruiskalso had to be abandoned when theTuesday morning ferry announcedthe storm was worsening and it wasunlikely there would be any moreferries that week.I spend a lot of work time out in thefield as the supportive partner incrime to David Noton, landscape andtravel photographer. Little did I know25 years ago that early morning vigilswould become earlier, more frequentand encompass all corners of theworld. I’ve learnt by trial and errorthe bare essentials of clothing that Iwouldn’t be without. I’ve learnt thatwe could start a day’s shoot in sunand finish in cold and rain. Comfortis essential, with watertight andwindproof clothing, reliability andlongevity a must – looking goodis an added bonus.Over the decades, I’ve tried manywaterproof jackets. A girlfriendtold me about Páramo, she had theVelez Adventure Smock, I neededsomething that worked, so I got one.I can’t live without it, it’s light, watertight, windproof and long enoughthat when the hood is up I don’t getneck ache! In the Black Mountainsin strong winds and torrential rain,my hood didn’t blow off whilst IAt this point, the groom’s party, including priest, were on Coruisk andthe bride with her party, includingbridesmaid and best man, were inElgol. Within the hour, we struck campand loaded the next ferry with bags, allowing most of us to walk out overthe ‘BadStep’ and round the coastback to Elgol.Next day, the morning of the wedding, strong winds buffeted the coast, sending white horses crashing inacross the sea. Fortunately we founda sheltered cove along the beachfrom Elgol, with a magical view of theCuillins just visible through the mist.confidently faced the elements, knowing I’d stay warm and dry. Whenwarm I opened the side vents, lettingair through.I’ve always put on overtrousers inthe rain – a battle when dressing inthe elements. So when my Cascadatrousers came, wearable alone forcomfort, warmth and waterproofing,I didn’t believe that they would doall these things. I was proved wrong– and they’re lightweight, cosy, withunrestricted leg movement. Anyexcuse and I wear them ratherthan walking trousers! While in the field, I often take outmy Canon G11 and observe what’saround me. I experiment with textiledesign in my head, concentrating ondetails and shots become cushioncovers or future projects. Beingcomfortable, dry and warm allows meto meditate and lose myself in nature. In essence, Páramo kit allows me toget on with the job and enjoy it.Wendy NotonWe were piped in byHighland piper, GrantMilne, and enjoyeda truly memorablewedding ceremony inan awe-inspiring andunforgettable locationwith our good friends. We were ready for the worst of theweather, warm and dry in our Páramogear and with plastic-laminated orderof service, but just as I slipped thering on Tina’s finger we were treatedto a brief glimpse of sunshine. We returned to our rented cottage fora light lunch and cake cutting, still inPáramo, before setting off along thecoast to find Bonnie Prince Charlie’scave and watch the heavy seas poundthe cliffs. A hot shower followed bya well-earned dinner at the CoruiskHouse Restaurant brought a reallyspecial wedding day to a fitting close.Tony & Tina WestcottThemillionthtreeCelebrations are planned forthe Millionth Tree planting inMay by conservation charityTrees for Life. The charity’s founder and executivedirector, Alan Watson Featherstonesaid: “The planting of our Millionth Treewill be a major milestone in a 250-yearproject – that’s how long it will take formature trees to return to areas wherethere are none today. ”Since its launch in 1986, Trees forLife – whose vision also includes thereintroduction of the forest’s wildlifeand plants, to form a fully-functioningecosystem – has grown into an awardwinningcharity, with a dedicated staff, hundreds of volunteers and thousandsof supporters.
