JEAN TSCHUMI PRIZE 2011:Louise Noelle GrasBorn in Mexico City, with a BA from the UniversidadIberoamericana and an MA from the Universidad NacionalAutónoma de México (UNAM), both in Art History.Professor of History of Architecture, UNAM (since 1991).Involved with Architectural criticism as Editor ofArquitectura/México (1976‐80) and researcher at theInstituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, UNAM (since 1982).She has been active in the defense of 20th centuryheritage, has received several recognitions and prizes and isa member of Comité International des Critiquesd’Architecture (CICA), Sociedad de Arquitectos Mexicanos,Academia de Artes, ICOMOS, DOCOMOMO‐México andAcademia Nacional de Bellas Artes de Argentina.19JEAN TSCHUMI PRIZE 2011:Louise Noelle Gras’s career is dedicatedto both architectural education and architecturalhistory and criticism.As an eminent teacher for more than 35 years, shehas contributed to the in‐depth study of 20thcentury Latin American architecture.As an historian and critic, she has been very activein promoting and defending 20 th centuryarchitecture at the head of many relevantorganisations.20

He was a consultant of the United NationsHigh Commissioner for Refugees and alsoestablished the Voluntary Architects’ Network in 1995.Renowned for his works of innovative ideas andstructures, he currently bases his practice in Tokyo,New York and Paris.He contributes much energy to disaster reliefprojects and has taught at major universities in Japanand the USA. He opened his own atelier in Porto in1954, designing smaller works and collaborating withFernando Tavora.He has taught at the University of Porto since 1966and also at Harvard, USA, the Ecole Poytechnique ofLausanne, Switzerland and Los Andes University Bogota,Colombia. His works are internationally renowned fortheir coherence, clarity, and what Siza calls simplism ‐ aquality that recognizes the complexity andcontradictions of a project without trying to imposeartificial control over them.He was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in1992 and the Royal Gold Medal of the RIBA in 2009.33GOLD MEDAL 2011:Àlvaro Siza Vieira,PortugalHe defies categorisation.
