the memory of David Geldard MBE
The Theme for 2012: Exercise in healthy hearts and heart disease
With the Olympics this summer, Tuesday 29 May will be the BCS Sports Day. Alongside
the main programme, the day will include dedicated BCS sessions relating to training (from
‘MAMiL’ to elite), sudden cardiac death and exercise in certain cardiac conditions. The
Arena in the Exhibition will have educational demonstrations on exercise during the breaks.
Don’t miss Olympic medalist Rebecca Romero on Tuesday lunchtime. Pitch yourself against
Chris Hoy on a simulator in the Arena and help us raise money for CRY with the Cyclathon
in the Central Foyer. Greg Whyte will be setting the pace. You could win tickets to the
Olympics or an iPad! Go to http://www.bcs.com/crycyclathon for more information. We are
also hosting an event for local school children outside the Conference to educate the next
generation on a healthy lifestyle.
Exhibition, Arena and Simulators
Please visit the Exhibition during the breaks. This year, we are providing more education
around the stands with case presentations, interpretation of data, ‘How to…’ posters. Come
and test your knowledge and visit the stands too. The arena activities are within the Exhibition
area. Simulation based learning will soon be part of revalidation and training and this year we
have a wider range of simulators than ever before, including a new station to help refine your
dissection and suturing skills. Sign up for sessions at the Simulator Area or online.
Social events
An important part of the Conference is the opportunity to network both professionally
and socially.
Annual Dinner – Tuesday 29 May, 7:30pm in the Alexandra Suite, Midland Hotel
The Annual Dinner is a must: following a drinks reception, infiltrated by magicians, and the
presentations, dinner will be accompanied by wine and a string quartet. We are delighted to
have an Olympian, sports scientist and celebrity trainer to entertain us for the after dinner
speech. Reserve your seat and table at the registration desk. Your table will have a chance
to win a magnum of champagne.
Tea Party! – Wednesday 30 May, 3pm in the Exhibition
It’s our 90th Birthday, so come and join us for a celebration ‘tea party’ on the Wednesday
afternoon in the Exhibition. See how the world and cardiology have changed over the
last nine decades. See how much we have raised for CRY and who has won the prizes
including Olympic tickets and an iPad.
Gold standard markers for heart failure
Elecsys ® NT-proBNP
Diagnose heart failure
Obtain the answers required to help rule-in
or rule-out heart failure..
Stratify risk
Accurately predict morbidity, mortality and
hospitalisation in patients with heart failure.
Manage renal patients
NT-proBNP provides important information
for the detection, prognosis and monitoring
of cardiovascular disease in renal patients.
International approval
FDA approved and recommended by ESC
for the diagnosis and assessment of heart
failure. NT-proBNP is a key performance
indicator for patients suspected with heart
failure without previous MI (NICE 2010).
Elecsys ® cardiac Troponin T high sensitive
Diagnose AMI on admission
Superior sensitivity enables earlier
diagnosis and faster rule-out of acute
myocardial infarction.
Enhance prognosis
Predict cardiovascular mortality in patients
with stable artery disease, chronic heart
failure and chronic renal failure.
Identify risk
High sensitivity helps to select patients who
may require further intervention or therapy.
Meet recommended guidelines
Improved sensitivity and excellent precision
Roche Elecsys NT-proBNP testing
improves patient pathway at East Sussex
Healthcare NHS Trust
The new heart failure service
at East Sussex Healthcare NHS
Trust, part of a new quality
improvement programme,
has reduced unnecessary
admissions, boosted diagnoses
of heart failure and made
annual savings for the PCT of
up to £270,000.
Better Patient
Outcomes
The Clinical Biochemistry
Laboratory at Eastbourne
District General Hospital
offers Roche Elecsys NTproBNP
testing as a routine
service to GPs throughout
the area. NT-proBNP test
requests are made when the
GP identifies a patient with
suspected heart failure.
The Roche Elecsys NTproBNP
assay is used
on a Roche Modular
E170 immunoassay
platform. With a 24
hour turnaround time,
the samples are tested
on the same day that
they are received and
results are sent out to
the GPs electronically
that evening.
The results tell the GP
if, and how quickly, the
patient should be referred
for specialist opinion and
further investigation by echo
cardiogram (ECG), following
NICE guidelines1 and
additional age/sex related
criteria. Criteria for selection
and oversight are provided
by a specialist GP, Dr Richard
Blakey, employed by the
Trust. If NT-proBNP levels
are high, patients are referred
quickly. This speeds up
the patient pathway, where
delays can be costly in terms
of patient outcomes.
The laboratory provides
testing reports (where the
test requests are coming
from; patient profiles; results,
etc) so that the primary care
commissioners can check
compliance of both patients
and GPs. This ensures that
the right patients are tested
and the right follow-up is
provided. Oversight and
feedback is provided by the
GP specialist, which is vital
to ensure and maintain
appropriate testing.
Cost Savings
Funding for NT-proBNP
testing is provided by the
Local PCT. Savings are made
in the improvement of the
patient pathway. Testing for
NT-proBNP has reduced the
number of patients requiring
referral for specialist
assessment and ECG.
A recent audit of the
service has shown that
NT-proBNP testing
has spared nearly 700
patients from being
referred in the last year.
This alone has resulted
in annual savings of up
to £270,000 against the
annual QIPP savings
target for cardiology of
£700,000 2 .
The testing service provided
by the laboratory is seen as
an integral part of the patient
process and contributes greatly
to the perceived value of
pathology within the Trust.
