COMPANY NUMBER : 3767312CHARITY NUMBER : 1075720BRITISH SOCIETY FOR HEART FAILURE(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)ANNUAL REPORTYEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2004

BRITISH SOCIETY FOR HEART FAILURE 1(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)TRUSTEES’ REPORTYEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2004The trustees submit their annual report, including the financial statements, for the year ended 31 May 2004.1. RESULTSA substantial surplus of income over expenditure of £22,037 for the year was accrued, which, inaddition to the reserves carried forward from the previous year of £3141 provide a final balance tocarry forward at 31 May 2004 of £25,178. The trustees consider the financial position of the charity tobe good and consistent with its charitable objects, and will continue to closely monitor the financialsituation. A continuing long-term aim of the trustees is to build up reserves to equate to one-year'soperating costs for the Society, through increasing the number of 'Friends of BSH' and securingincreased sponsorship for the Society's annual scientific conference. This is in addition to gatheringannual membership fees during the year and delegate registration fees for the Annual AutumnMeetings.2. REVIEW OF CHARITY AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTSThe charity operates with a voluntary management committee/Board of trustees who meet on aquarterly basis. Our main objective is to relieve patients with, or who are at risk of developing, heartfailure mainly through promoting research into heart failure and into prevention, treatment and cures ofsuch complaints, and the dissemination of the results of such research. The charity is an affiliated group of the British Cardiac Society (BCS).At the end of the period, the charity's membership, comprising healthcare professionals with an interestin heart failure stood at 600 subscribed members. This figure increased from around 500 members atthe end of the previous financial period. The introduction of annual membership fees of £25/year fornurses, research fellows, physiotherapists and medical students, and £30/year for all other healthcareprofessionals in 2002 seems to have been successful and is now starting to provide a useful source ofincome for the Society. The membership fee was introduced to help the Society continue and increaseits activities. It was anticipated that there would be a large reduction in membership figures uponintroduction of the fee, but the Board is happy with the proportion of members who have chosen tocommit to the Society and retain their membership despite the introduction of the annual fees.Board of trusteesTrustees who served during the year ended 31 May 2004 were:Chairman:Past-Chairman:Chairman-Elect:Deputy Chairman:Treasurer:Councillor:Councillor:Councillor:Professor Henry Dargie (Glasgow)Dr Michael Davies (Birmingham)Professor John Cleland (Hull)Dr Suzanna Hardman (London)Dr Theresa McDonagh (Glasgow)Mrs Lynda Blue (Glasgow)Professor Martin Cowie (London)Dr Iain Squire (Leicester)The Board of trustees was elected in May 2003 with appointments taking effect from 1 June 2003 and aterm of office until end May 2005.The trustees are not entitled to and did not receive any remuneration during the period.Under the terms of the statutory guarantee the trustees, numbering 8, are deemed to be statutorymembers and as such have given an undertaking to contribute up to £1 each if called upon to do so.
