ACCOUNTING POLICIESThe principal accounting policies of the company are as follows:(a)(b)Basis of accountingThe financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and inaccordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting byCharities (SORP 2000) issued in October 2000, applicable accounting standards and theCompanies Act 1985.IncomeFriends of BSH contributions and annual membership fees are made on an annual basis andare recognised in the income and expenditure account on an accruals basis.Sponsorship and other donations for furtherance of British Society for Heart Failure’scharitable objects are recognised in the income and expenditure account when received.Grants are included in the income and expenditure account as they become receivable.(c)Explanation of the categories of expenditureCost of generating fundsThis includes direct expenditure incurred in liaising with friends of the society and securingtheir contributions and obtaining sponsorship and a proportion of management overheads.Costs of activities in furtherance of the charity’s objectsThis comprises all direct costs and management overheads which have been incurred by thecharity in meeting its charitable objects.Management and administrationManagement and administration expenses represent the costs incurred in connection with theadministration of the charity and compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements.(d)(e)(f)TaxationThe company is a registered charity and is not liable to United Kingdom taxes on its income.Restricted fundsWhere income is received for purposes specified by the donor or by the terms of an appealunder which it was raised, that income is shown as restricted in the Statement of FinancialActivities. Expenditure for the specified purposes is shown as restricted expenditure. Anyunexpended balance at the balance sheet date is carried forward as a restricted reserve.Gifts in kindWhere the charity receives goods or services by way of gifts in kind the market value of thegift is accounted for in the statement of Financial Activities as an incoming and outgoingresource.
