BRITISH SOCIETY FOR HEART FAILURE 2(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)TRUSTEES’ REPORTYEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2004ObserversThe following four Observers were chosen by the Board in 2003 from nominations from themembership, and were appointed to serve for the period to end May 2005 to represent disciplines withan interest in heart failure not represented by the current Board.• Ahmet Fuat (representing Primary care physicians)• Stephen Westaby (representing Surgeons)• Jackie Taylor (representing Geriatricians)• Lynda Blue (representing Nurses)Scientific symposiaThe charity organised or supported the following scientific symposia during the period, to which allmembers were invited:• 'New approaches to heart failure – the impact of sleep’: 27 June 2003This symposium was held in London and organised by the Royal <strong>Society</strong> for Medicine and <strong>British</strong>Cardiac <strong>Society</strong>, and was supported by the BSH. BSH members were able to take advantage of areduced registration fee for the meeting.• BSH Annual Autumn Meeting: 28 November 2003The Annual Autumn Meeting 2003 and AGM took place on 28 November 2003 in Oxford. Themeeting was entitled 'Heart Failure beyond maximum medical management' and focussed onways to manage advanced HF in patients for whom medical management is no longer sufficient.Around 300 participants registered for the meeting, along with 14 exhibitors and 8 scientificposter presenters. The meeting was filmed by the BBC as part of a documentary being madeabout the Programme Director, Mr Stephen Westaby, a distinguished cardiac surgeon fromOxford. The report from the meeting was published in Spring 2004 as the 15 th BSH newsletter.• BSH sessions at the <strong>British</strong> Cardiac <strong>Society</strong> (BCS) Annual Scientific Conference,24–27 May 2004As a BCS affiliated group, the BSH held three very successful sessions as part of the BCS AnnualScientific Conference. The programmes were titled:- Heart Failure: delivering evidence-based care in the UK- Electrical device therapy in heart failure: unmet need and unmet cost (Joint session betweenBSH and BPEG)- Anti-thrombotic therapy for heart failure: which agent, if any?A meeting report covering all three sessions was published as the 16 th BSH Newsletter, which wascirculated to members in September 2004.Annual General Meeting: 28 November 2003The charity's Annual General Meeting was held on 28 November 2003 in Oxford, and accounts for theperiod 2002-2003 were presented.
