BRITISH SOCIETY FOR HEART FAILURE 2(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)TRUSTEES’ REPORTYEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2004ObserversThe following four Observers were chosen by the Board in 2003 from nominations from themembership, and were appointed to serve for the period to end May 2005 to represent disciplines withan interest in heart failure not represented by the current Board.• Ahmet Fuat (representing Primary care physicians)• Stephen Westaby (representing Surgeons)• Jackie Taylor (representing Geriatricians)• Lynda Blue (representing Nurses)Scientific symposiaThe charity organised or supported the following scientific symposia during the period, to which allmembers were invited:• 'New approaches to heart failure – the impact of sleep’: 27 June 2003This symposium was held in London and organised by the Royal Society for Medicine and BritishCardiac Society, and was supported by the BSH. BSH members were able to take advantage of areduced registration fee for the meeting.• BSH Annual Autumn Meeting: 28 November 2003The Annual Autumn Meeting 2003 and AGM took place on 28 November 2003 in Oxford. Themeeting was entitled 'Heart Failure beyond maximum medical management' and focussed onways to manage advanced HF in patients for whom medical management is no longer sufficient.Around 300 participants registered for the meeting, along with 14 exhibitors and 8 scientificposter presenters. The meeting was filmed by the BBC as part of a documentary being madeabout the Programme Director, Mr Stephen Westaby, a distinguished cardiac surgeon fromOxford. The report from the meeting was published in Spring 2004 as the 15 th BSH newsletter.• BSH sessions at the British Cardiac Society (BCS) Annual Scientific Conference,24–27 May 2004As a BCS affiliated group, the BSH held three very successful sessions as part of the BCS AnnualScientific Conference. The programmes were titled:- Heart Failure: delivering evidence-based care in the UK- Electrical device therapy in heart failure: unmet need and unmet cost (Joint session betweenBSH and BPEG)- Anti-thrombotic therapy for heart failure: which agent, if any?A meeting report covering all three sessions was published as the 16 th BSH Newsletter, which wascirculated to members in September 2004.Annual General Meeting: 28 November 2003The charity's Annual General Meeting was held on 28 November 2003 in Oxford, and accounts for theperiod 2002-2003 were presented.
BRITISH SOCIETY FOR HEART FAILURE 3(A COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE)TRUSTEES’ REPORTYEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2004Meeting reportsThe proceedings from the three symposia held as part of the BCS Annual Scientific Conference in 2003were published as the 14 th BSH Newsletter in Summer 2003. A report from the Autumn Meeting 2003was published in Spring 2004 as the 15 th BSH Newsletter. Copies of both newsletters were circulated tomembers.Heart failure nurse trainingHeart failure nurses have maintained and increased their representation as a large and key group withinthe membership of Society. During 2002, the BSH formed collaboration with the British HeartFoundation and the Glasgow Caledonian University to develop the first formally academicallyaccredited educational programme to prepare registered nurses and other allied health careprofessionals to managed patients with chronic heart failure. The course, entitled 'Principles of caremanagement' was established in 2002 and runs three times a year. From its inception, until the end ofMay 2003, around 128 nurses had either completed or were currently attending the course.WebsiteThe BSH section of the BCS website has continued to develop, and additional resources were addedduring the period June 2003-May 2004, including a comprehensive ‘blueprint’ for the management of heartfailure patients in the community and in hospitals. The trustees are keen to develop new material forinclusion on the website, providing valuable information specifically related to heart failure.Heart Failure DatabaseThree working parties to formulate plans for a national heart failure database took place fromNovember 2003-May 2004. The outcome of these meetings was to consolidate information as to whatalready exists in terms of heart failure databases, and what would be sensible to develop. The next stepis to agree a minimum dataset that would fulfil audit requirements, with a view to expanding this toinclude electronic patient records as a second phase of development.Heart Failure 'Standards'A sub-committee of the Board developed a document outlining 'Standards' for care in heart failure. Thedocument will be incorporated into the BSC Standards in Cardiology, which will be used for thepurpose of peer-review/audit of standards in secondary care.Friends of BSHThe increase in contributions from Friends of BSH in the accounting period June 2003-May 2004 waslargely due to new ongoing commitments beginning in 2003 from Pfizer and Takeda and in 2004 fromBayer and A Menarini. These added to the existing ongoing commitments from AstraZeneca, E Merck,GlaxoSmithKline, Medtronic, Roche and Servier.Future activitiesThe following BSH activities have taken place or been planned since the financial year end:• A report from the BSH symposia held during the BCS Annual Scientific Conference 2004 waspublished as the 16 th BSH Newsletter and circulated to members in September 2004.• Meeting on circulatory assist devices, 2 July 2004. This one day symposium entitled ‘Developmentof mechanical circulatory programmes for the UK: a consensus conference’ was held as anadditional meeting in 2004. The meeting was supported by the Department of Health, who wererepresented at the meeting, and endorsed by the BCS.
