Oil war?If Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is at the brink of disintegration, Sudan, untilrecently the largest country in Africa is already behind it—after half a century of ethnic <strong>and</strong>religious wars. In July 2011, after a civil war which lasted a generation, Sudan, with an areaof ​2.5 million km 2 (for comparison, the entire area of the European Union is 4.3 million km 2 ),divided into two parts. The smaller southern part gave birth to the new independent stateof South Sudan, with an area of ​620,000 km 2 <strong>and</strong> about 8.3 million inhabitants.Independence in South Sudan fulfilled the dream of many people living in this vastterritory. During colonial rule Great Britain administered both north <strong>and</strong> south Sudan, butbecause of the large ethnic <strong>and</strong> religious differences, the British managed them as twoessentially separate entities. When Sudan gained independence from Britain, there wereconsiderations about the possible connection of South Sudan—formerly known as Equatoria—toUg<strong>and</strong>a. It turned out that the concerns that led to those considerations werejustified. Once independent, Sudan consisting of both the northern <strong>and</strong> southern partwas established in 1956, the Arabized <strong>and</strong> more economically developed north introduceddomination over the Nilot <strong>and</strong> mainly Christian tribes in the south leading to a profounddissatisfaction <strong>and</strong> two long civil wars. The first war lasted from 1955 to 1972 <strong>and</strong> over the17 years claimed the lives of about half a million people, of whom about 400,000 were civilians.The second Sudanese war lasted even longer—22 years (1983 to 2005)—<strong>and</strong> killed upto 2 million people.Thus, the endless civil war in Sudan claimed about two <strong>and</strong> a half million lives <strong>and</strong> fivemillion found themselves as refugees.
