news from the fieldCrossing The American Continent By WaterOn Sunday April 4th 2009, AlexanderMartin departed on his expeditionto travel by canoe and foot5,500 miles from Portland, ORto Portland, ME and the AtlanticOcean in one seasonal year. Theplanned route lies entirely withinthe contiguous United States andtraverses many of the country’sgreat and storied rivers as well asmany hidden and wild places accessibleonly by water. All travelwill be human powered, either bypaddle or portage.The 6,000 mile route will be attemptedover a period of six monthsand will include over 2,000 milespaddled against the current, 3,500miles with it, and over 600 miles ofportaging. The route began on theincoming tide of the Pacific Oceanand follows the Columbia, Snake,Yellowstone, Missouri, and OhioRivers for much – and in mostcases all – of their length, beforejoining Lake Erie, the Erie Canal,the Hudson River and a variety ofsmaller rivers and lakes to meetthe Atlantic Ocean at the mouthof the Presumpscot River. “I willwithstand the snow and wind of theCascades in April, battle the powerof the Rocky Mountain freshet,cross the continental divide by portaging100 miles through the TetonRange, and, depending on waterlevels and the most appropriateroute, paddle through downtownPortland, Kansas City, St. Louis,Chicago, Louisville, Cincinnati,Pittsburgh, and Albany as well asYellowstone National Park, TetonNational Park, fifty National WildlifeRefuges, four Wild and ScenicRivers, and several National RecreationalAreas, just to name a few,”says Martin.If successful, this crossing will bethe first of its kind. It will be thefirst west to east crossing of NorthAmerica by canoe in a single yearand the first crossing of the UnitedStates, at its widest point, by nonbicyclehuman power in a singleyear. “The achievement of these arbitrarydistinctions is not the goal ofthis project,” explains Martin. “Mygoal is to explore my country andinteract with my countrymen andwomen, raising awareness of riverconservation and education effortsof organizations. I will invite thepeople I meet and those that haveonly heard or read about the projectto pledge a penny or a dime or anyamount they choose for each mileI paddle, and direct that money tothe organizations whose life workis the protection of these rivers andthe education of their importanceto the next generation.”Martins’ choice to travel across theUnited States by canoe is a deliberateone. “The connection peoplefeel with their backyard, their localriver or town is immense, andthe canoe is a ubiquitous object inour country. Thisinternational expedition adventurerace will bring 200+ nationaland international athletes toAustralia from 17-28 May 2010.It will be “as much an expeditionas a race”.Cairns To Host XPD In 2010Race Director Craig Bycroft said“Tropical North Queensland offersthe ideal location to host the5th edition of XPD. We plan totake competitors through theGreat Barrier Reef and nearbyislands, the rich and diverse rainforestsof the wet tropics, over waterfallsand cascades that feed crystalclear rivers, across lakes of thetablelands and through eucalyptwoodlands of the Eastern savannahcountry. We even plan to incorporatesome of the iconic legs undertakenin the Eco-Challenge of 97”XPD is open to mixed, all maleor all female teams of four fromaround the world. The exact courseis kept secret until 24hrs beforethe start. Then with much excitementand anticipation, teams areprovided a course booklet and theirrace maps. The course bookletcontains the location of each of therace checkpoints. Once teams start,racing is 24 hours per day; teamschoose when and where they willsleep. The winning team is expectedto trek, mountain bike and kayakthe 700km course in 4-5 days. Allother teams will be permitted up to10 days to complete the expeditionwithout mid-race cut offs. XPD willbe challenging for first time racersand experienced teams alike.As a member of the AR <strong>World</strong> Series,XPD is a qualifying event forthe <strong>Adventure</strong> Race <strong>World</strong> Championship(ARWC). The AR <strong>World</strong>Series is an international circuitof premiere adventure races representing10 countries creating a12 month calendar of professionalevents around the world. Gone To The DogsBy Amanda JonesFor more than 30 years, “13” hasproved to be a rather lucky numberfor one Alaskan family. In 1978,Dick Mackey won the Iditarod onhis 6th try wearing bib number13. Then in 1983, son Rick takesthe title back for the Mackey familyon his 6th try wearing bib number13. Flash forward 24 years, littlebrother Lance becomes the kingof the Mackey family and the Iditarod,you guessed it on his 6th trywearing bib #13! That year, Lancewon his first of three straight Iditarodtitles. The road to the winner’scircle was not an easy onefor Lance. Though it might soundlike mushing is in his blood, he stillovercame unbelievable odds to notonly join the ranks of his father andbrother, but to surpass them. TheIditarod has been called one ofthe ‘last great races on earth’. Itis over 1150 miles of the most gorgeousand treacherous terrain onecould imagine. It starts in Anchorage,AK and ends in Nome.Native Alaskan, Lance Mackey,now calls Fairbanks, AK home.The 38-year-old father and athleteis now a fulltime musher and ownsComeback Kennels with his family.His career in mushing got off to aslow start. In fact, he didn’t evenrealize mushing was a dream forhim. “I grew up around dogs, butmy dad always left me the bottomof the barrel racing dogs,” saidLance, “it was his way of teachingme and my brother Jason responsibility.”As a teen, the highlight of Mackey’sracing career was a 4th place finishin the Jr. Iditarod. By the timehe was 18, Mackey had gone from140 dogs to none. He even becamea commercial fisherman for a time.After marrying and becoming a fatherto his wife’s three small children,he ended up with 10 dogs beforehe knew it. Mackey just wasn’tsure the title of IDIT champ wasin the cards for him. The 10 dogshe had accumulated were actuallyused to have fun with the kids.“The only racing they were doingwas up and down our driveway,”said Mackey. Then the mushingbug bit again. “I think the feverhad always been there. I was soproud of my dad and brother, theywere legends, I was always braggingabout them”In 2001, he couldn’t resist thetemptation of the ultimate race anylonger. He ran the race with borrowedand “left over” dogs. “Ijust wanted a belt buckle for completingthe race, only 600 peoplein the world have them,” he said.He finished 36 out of 58. But then,he realized if he had finished only6 places higher, he would havealso gotten a portion of the “racepurse.” He also wanted to makehis family proud.Mackey had a long and trying roadstill ahead of him on his journey tobeing an Iditarod champ. In 2002,Mackey was diagnosed with throatcancer. He had surgery that Apriland then the radiation and recoveryprocess began. As I listenedto Mackey’s recount of that tryingyear I was shocked to hear thathe actually raced in 2002. Manywould consider just making it tothe starting line an accomplishment.But not Mackey, the competitivespirit that had made the othermen in his family so successful wasalive in him too. tube at the time, and couldn’t keepmy liquid food thawed.” Here’sa guy who amazed this journalistby simply attempting this amazingfeat. Yet, for him it was a majordisappointment. “It was the lowestmoment in my life. I had disappointedso many people.” Hisfamily and his sponsors were paramountto him. Not your $5000sponsors mind you. “I was getting$500 sponsors at this time.” Theamount was not the important partof this to Lance. It was the faiththey had put in him. By the way,several of those sponsors evendropped him after that race.When asked about being an inspirationto others (particularly cancersurvivors); Again, his humbleand hardworking persona shinesthrough and he sees nothing tooremarkable about his accomplishment.“I find it odd,” he said, “Ithink I did what most people woulddo. I had a dog team, a wife and afamily counting on me.” However,Mackey still realizes the gravity ofthe situation he survived “I don’tthink anyone who deals with whatI dealt with can help but be gratefulfor tomorrow and thankful fortoday.”So, 2003 rolls around and moneybecomes an <strong>issue</strong> and keeps himfrom competing. In 2004, he andhis brother, Jason make top 30 finishesand get a much needed boost.2005 had even more in store forthis athlete. I asked if ever he wasadvised to give this whole racingthing a rest, his doctors thought ofthis too. “Don’t tell me I can’t dosomething.” is all he said. Thatsomething in Mackey’s mind was tobe the first person to run the Yukonand Iditarod back to back. That’sexactly what he did. He was the2005 Yukon champ and got a top 7finish in the Iditarod. That was thefirst chapter to a very successfulracing career for Lance Mackey.To put this in perspective, he is theonly musher to win the over 1000mile races back to back. He did itnot once but twice.He won the Yukon in 2005, 2006,2007, and 2008. He gives all ofcredit to his “team”. He attributeshis success to his dogs and the supportof his family. “The dogs arethe #1 reason we are out there,”he said: The relationship with yourdogs is crucial. I have 100 dogsand treat them all like family. Somemushers are too serious and are inthis just as a business. I don’t dothat.”Mackey says the secret to his successis quite simple. Dedication! “Iam out there with my dogs 99% ofthe time,” said Mackey. It is a connectionhe has cultivated with hisdogs and is certainly proud of it.“We put our heart and souls intothis,” he said, “My wife is thebackbone of Team Mackey.”Then there are the furry familymembers. And, I quickly learn that“Larry” is a big part of this familyaffair. He is also known as the“lead dog” around the Mackeyclan.“You hope to find them once in alifetime, said Mackey,”I didn’t realizewhat I had with Larry untilI had had him a couple of years.”Larry is nine years old and thiswas his last year to race. By theway, he did finish the race this year.“A few parts of the race we went atLarry speed. But, our crew is notwimpy,” said Mackey.The dogs even get to take a summerbreak. “I let them lay aroundall summer, from the first week ofApril to the first week of August,”said Mackey. Mackey also saysthey are like any athlete and needto heal. But I had to ask, just howdo you train dogs in August withno snow? I found out quickly thatmushers are a resourceful breed. “Ihook them up to ATVs and run ondirt trails to build their muscles,”added Mackey.But back to the race… In 2009,after 9 days, 21 hours, 38 minutesand 46 seconds… Lance Mackeyclaimed his 3rd Iditarod title. Itstill gives Lance a boost to hear theexcitement in his Dad’s voice aftera race. “After my third win, mydad was in disbelief,” said Mackey.He knew his son had joined anelite few. Dick Mackey now lives inArizona. “He was the first personI talked to this year,” said Mackey,“I tear up thinking about him.”The race and the gear have certainlychanged since his dad wonthe Iditarod back in 1978. “Sledsand gear have very much improvedsince the 70’s,” he said, “My dadhad a military sleeping bag weighing20 lbs. Mine is 3-1/2 lbs. And,there were very few dog food companiesthen.” Lance recalls a storyfrom his dad about the time he gotstuck in a snow storm. He sayshis dad had to hunt for moose justto feed the dogs. In comparison,Lance and other mushers now sendout 2500 pounds of gear and foodto check points weeks ahead of therace.One other thing Mackey Sr. didn’thave, Lance’s “must have” piece ofgear - his iPod! “Its quiet and desolateout there,” he said, “it helps<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> is a GreenZine 11


keep you motivated.”Only 2 other racers, Susan Butcher(1986-88) and Doug Swingley(1999-2001), have won the Iditarod3 consecutive times. But, itwas one of the awards given by theveterinarians after the race thatMackey most treasures. He wasgiven the “Humanitarian Award”.For an animal lover like Mackey,this was priceless. “I would tradethe truck, the money everythingfor that award.” It means the vetsalong the racecourse think thatMackey had the best care for hisdog team.One part of the process that iseasier for Mackey now is the availabilityof sponsors to him. He cannow focus on training and racingfull time. And, it is an expensivegame to play “$100K a year is aconservative amount to spend ona racing team” said Mackey. Heputs in $60-70K a year.He now has another possible awardon the horizon, an ESPY. “I havehad 3 years of being nominated,”he said, “just being nominated ishuge even if I don’t win.”When asked what words of wisdomhe would pass along to futuremushers, Mackey responded:“It’s a passionate sport that takeseffort. You must be patient, there’sno overnight success. You only getout of it what you put in.” Lancerecalls going without family vacationsso that they could put all oftheir money into their racing dogs.I couldn’t avoid the temptation tocompare this Lance to another famousrace-winning-cancer-survivingLance. Wouldn’t you know it;I wasn’t the first to make this comparison.“We got approached bythe Lance Armstrong Foundationto come down to Texas and do acommercial with him.” The otherdetails Mackey is not too sure of,“My wife handles that,” he said.In case you are wondering aboutthe next generation of racingMackeys. Lance’s teenaged son,Cain Mackey, is proving this is afamily tradition. He just won theJr. Iditarod. And now, Lance getsto feel the same type of pride hisfather has felt for him.But Lance isn’t hanging up hisracing sled just yet. His goal for2010? “To get as many happy andhealthy dogs to Nome as I can!”His final words to me were notabout himself. “We thank the fansand all of those who support us andthe dogs.” •<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 12

Lessons Learned At HuairasinchiStory by Jacob Thompson • Photos by Robert Espinosa F“How do you feel? Are younervous?” asked a reporter at thestarting line of the race.“Nervous? Nah. I would say it ismore a feeling of resignation,” JJreplied as he looked through theballoon arch at the starting line ofthe Huairasinchi <strong>Adventure</strong> Race.It was our first adventure race and Ihad lost plenty of sleep in the weeksbefore thinking about the numbers:3 days to cover 200 miles, reachingelevations of 14,435 and droppingto just 108 feet in the last 60 miles.A good 45 miles of the race doesnot fall below 11,500 feet. As theorganizers presented the map andintroduced the course the nightbefore the race, they promised itwould be cold and we would suffer.Oh yeah, we would be skirting anactive volcano that was spewingash over the trail; it happened tobe Carnival and we should notbe surprised if locals threw waterballoons or eggs at us. Don’t worry,it´s tradition.You gotta love Ecuador.LIFESTYLE:Competing in an adventure raceseemed reasonable, consideringI have spent the last couple yearstraveling by bike with my friends,looking for adventures at everyturn. Our goal has been to stay offpavement as we ride self-supportedfrom Alaska to Patagonia, followingthe continental divide. Regularly,we find ourselves off map,dragging our bikes through mud,and asking locals for directions inunfamiliar languages, somethinglike adventure racing, but withoutcheckpoints and jerseys. We already had a solid team, ingood shape, and well acquaintedunder highly stressful conditions injust about every climate possible.We are all friends from collegewith lots of shared adventures andable to settle all important decisionswith a civilized game of Ro-Sham-Bo. A great team situation.Originally our trip was to takeabout two years, but after settlinginto the lifestyle we realized the lastthing we wanted to do was actuallyarrive at the tip of South America.Huairasinchi was to be a new twistto our journey, one that would pushour limits and force us to do what<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 14


eply caustically.In between visits to the ATM Iwould check off each item on thelist of obligatory equipment.JJ realized his flip flops would notcut it for the 62 miles of trekkingwe had in front of us and founda great pair “fast” brand runningshoes for 12 dollars at a Chineseimport store. He was stoked. The last thing on our list was a pairof shoes for me.“Size 9 is the largest we have.Just try it on.” The salesladyencouraged.“But I wear a size 12?”“Not important. Try these,” Sheoffered, holding up another box.“What size are those?”“Size 9”“Uh-huh”that night thinking about 60 milesof trekking in rubber boots.PEDRO:The day before the race we metPedro for the first time. About thesame age as us, but looked like ayoung teenager. His attitude waspositive and we all liked him.He had an expensive new neongreen bike that seemed to weighabout as much my wheelset alone. “Are you ready?” I asked him. “Yeah. Absolutely.” He repliedwith confidence.PRE-RACE:Our support vehicle arrived: atricked out 2008 Land Roverwith a full-roof bike-rack, a dealarranged for us by a race director.We loaded up the vehicle with ourbikes and gear; plastered the largeHuairasinchi stickers on the sideand suddenly looked like we knewwhat we were doing.Inside the van, we crammed 8people into 6 seats for the 4 hour tripto the starting point. We re<strong>view</strong>edsome tutorials on using a compass,and tapped on the face of the 30dollar altimeter that we assumedwas worthless. Maybe we can justfollow the other teams, we naivelyhypothesized. In reality, we hadno idea what we were gettingourselves into.Yet, as we ate ice cream and goofedaround at a rest stop, it did notmatter if we knew what we weredoing, we were going to have agood time.RACE DAY:At the starting line, we waitedApparently, nobody in Quito hasfeet larger than size 9, and all Iwas able to find were a pair of tallrubber boots. calmly for the event to begin,watching all the racers polishedup in multi-colored lycra outfitsnervously pacing around.With hindsight, we wereapproaching the event as if it werejust another day on our bike tour.There was no conversation aboutteam roles, who was going tonavigate or make sure everybodywas eating or drinking enough. Wejust assumed that everybody wouldhandle their scene, like every otherday for the past few years. Withinhours we would see that this wasnot going to be like every otherday, at all. As the gun sounded, we quicklybegan climbing out of town ona cobblestone road. JJ and Ipedaled close together keepinga comfortable pace and steadilypassing one team after another.We turned around a bend, passinga guy on his mule and crossed abridge where a photographer wasshooting. “So where is your team?”he asked.I didn´t have to look back to knowthat JJ was right behind me orthat Sean was about two minutesbehind since he was riding hisSurly Big Dummy long bike, anobscenely heavy bike to use for arace. However, for the first time,I realized that I had no clue howcapable our new teammate reallywas. After a few minutes of waiting,we started to get nervous and feltlike bad teammates for not stayingtogether. A mechanical perhaps?I grabbed a length of rope and speddown the hill looking for him. Ahalf-mile down the hill I found himpushing his bike. I started attaching the rope to hisbike and he tried to stop me, “No.No. I don´t need to be pulled up”he claimed. This was the first moment that Iunderstood I was by default, thecaptain of this team. Ro-Sham-Bowasn´t going to cut it.“You were pushing your bike,”I told him, “Hopefully this willhelp.” Towing him proved even moredifficult than carrying all mysupplies for a multi-year bike tour.I found myself looking back tosee if he was even pedaling. Westill had another 10 kilometers ofclimbing to the top of the hill, andwe stopped at various points tryingto switch off towing Pedro, but inthe frenzy I’d tied an impossibleknot and was stuck tugging him therest of the way.I was just barely prepared to carry<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> is a GreenZine 17


“Does that help?” I asked her.“Oh yeah. Very much.” She replied,looking down at the strap in awe.We had not considered having totow somebody while hiking, butfigured out how to rig up a waiststrap for him to grab onto. It was asmiserable as it sounds, and quicklystarted hurting my knees, so JJfinished dragging him to the top.myself across the country andwas not prepared to carry anotherperson through this course.Control Point 1:At the top of the hill we got ourpassport stamped and I was able todisconnect Pedro from the tether.He kept up well on the downhillsections.Like ants emerging from theirtunnels after a foot smashes ontotheir mound, cyclists were scurryingacross the hillsides. Apparently,nobody knew exactly where theywere going on the maze of roads. Ifelt ridiculous for ever thinking wecould merely follow other teamsacross the course.Control Point 2:We came skidding into a haciendafilled with support vehicles andcrew. The Austrian model greetedus at the trailhead and pointed ustowards the Land Rover where wedropped off our bikes. Apparently,she was responsible for at least onebike collision while waiting for usto arrive. I forgot to change out ofmy bike shorts (something we referto as our diaper without affection)and only managed to take off oneglove before we were trekkingthrough cornfields towards the nextCP.Pedro was already falling waybehind, shortly into the hike. “Justfinding a pace he could keep for 3days,” he assured us.A cluster of teams was gatheredat the end of a road we had beenfollowing. Some were consideringa gnarly route following theEcuadorian military team whohad taken a compass bearing andbushwacked straight over themountain towards the CP. Crawlingthrough their jungle tunnel lookedhellish and we continued to traversethe mountain, eventually gettingback on the original trail.Control Point 3:A steep jungle trail heavily erodedby ages of rain and use took usinto a dwarf tree forest. Pedrocontinued to lag more and more,despite our encouragement.A team passed us with a womangrabbing onto the waist strap of herteammate as they climbed the trail.Misty hillsides greeted us and wewatched our trail disappear intopatches of paramo grasses until wesaw another team running by.After a knee pounding descent ona dirt road we could see the nextcheckpoint; an open stadium filledwith support vehicles. Down a steeptrail, we dropped through the thickjungle foliage and later learned thata member of the military team hurthis knee descending this section andwas carried out by his teammates.Control Point 4: (4:30AM)We had been out for about 10 hoursat this point and relaxed for awhileat the transition point.“He´s only carrying 1.5 liters ofwater!” JJ told me as he watchedPedro´s Camelbak get filled up,“We were just out there for 6 hours.He´s gotta drink more agua.” Extrafood and water was added to hispack.Our next CP with a support crewwas about 60 miles away and duskwas coming in only two hours. Wewere all worried about the initialclimb in this stage, afraid thatPedro just could not do it. To makethings worse, we made a wrongturn that took us 6 miles off route<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 18


Then Sean started to panic, “Mylight. I don´t have my headlamp, Ileft it with the other pack.”“Keep looking, maybe they packedit,” JJ said calmly.“Nothing. I don´t have it.” Seansaid finally.Fortunately, Pedro had a light onhis bike and a headlamp he couldspare.Into the night, we would ride a good30 minutes through the dense mistand fog offering at most 10 feet ofvisibility, and then we´d hang outwaiting for Pedro. No one wasreally able to tow him anymore.At some point in the night, wecrossed paths with a team on foot,still seeking CP4, brutally lost.Control Point 5: (10-11PM)“Be very careful on this nextdownhill, there is some seriousmud.” The Control Point volunteerwarned us.and downhill.“Can somebody carry mybackpack?” asked Pedro as he laydown on the concrete after climbingback up to the turnoff we missed.“Sure, man.” Sean said, andattached it to his bike.We passed a hacienda and reacheda turnoff and waited for Pedro asdarkness set in completely, lowclouds covered the stars. A haggardlooking team pedaled up, from theadventure category that covers halfthe overall distance. “You see asolo rider down there?” We asked.“Yeah. He is pushing his bike up.”One of the guys said as he crumpledwith exhaustion into the thick grass.He got out his headlamp and theycontinued on.All our headlamps veered towardswhere we imagined the trail to be,but could see only fog. We weresliding all over the place, hittingpatches of mud that sucked in halfour front wheel. At a turnoff weused our tried and true navigationmethod, “So which route has moretire tracks?”As we were inspecting the trail,a huge group of teams arrivedand we raced down some smoothswitchbacks at high speeds withvery little light. We hooked up our bikes to aclimbing rig and sent it to the otherside of the canyon, and one at atime traversed the line, wishing wehad gotten here before sunset toenjoy the <strong>view</strong>.Control Point 9: (3:30 AM)CP 9 was just a few minutes away.There was another chasm to cross.This time it was inside a metalgondola.We came skidding into the nextcontrol point to get our passportstamped.Control Point 6: (11-Midnight)We rode along the river andcrossed a bridge looking for avirtual checkpoint. Somewherenearby there was a sign with threewords we needed, only it was notprecisely located on the map andwe were unsure what to do.The team waited at a bus stop whileI pedaled around trying to find thesign further up the river, just in case.I was only able to find belligerentdrunks out at that hour, and cameback empty-handed. The lack ofsleep was catching up. JJ and Iwere still pretty strong and lucid,but Sean was starting to deteriorateand Pedro was on fumes.Control Point 7: (12-1 AM)Our virtual checkpoint was justfurther up the road and we madeour way along a gradually inclinedroad for what was described by atienda clerk as a “giant bird” at thebase of a rockslide.Sure enough, on a poorlyconstructed artificial tree sat an8-10 foot bird, and our next CP wasa steep 5 mile climb away.Pedro rounded a bend, slowlypushing his bike up. “I justvomited,” he told us.“Drink some water, we are almostthere.” I said. But the truth was, wewere not almost there. We still hada pretty significant climb before wemet up with our support crew.Control Point 8: (2.45 AM)“It is 2:45 A.M.” the volunteer atthe Tyrolean traverse told us, “thecut off time for the Cotalo CP is3 AM. And, you have 5 miles ofsteep switchbacks ahead of you. Ifyou want to continue, we will letyou go across, otherwise you mightwant to radio your support crew.”I looked over at my teammatesand watched the effect of the newscrush them. As if our report cardhad been handed back to us with abright red F. We talked it over anddecided we did not want to botherour support crew, and would ratherride it out to the end.Climbing up the switchbacks to thefinal control point as the sun rose,teams were wiped out along the way,sitting against the embankmentswith vacant expressions. We hadlong ago run out of water andsnacks, never imagining that a60-kilometer bike ride could takealmost 14 hours.Throughout the climb, Pedrowould vomit at least three times ashe pushed his bike all the way toCotalo. I imagine he was happythat the race was over.Control Point 10: (6:30 AM)Our support crew was awakeand waiting for us with a feast,including freshly made guacamole,fried potatoes, and quesadillas.They were a bit delirious havingnot slept through the night, andcheered us up by obnoxiouslyspraying cheap champagne all overus and excitedly cheering us on.The girls promised a big party forus later.After getting our passport stampedone last time, I gazed at the 10 holespunched through our card, eachrepresenting a sliver of adventure:muddy trails through dwarf forestsand pedaling through indigenousvillages in the night.<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 20


Yet, I couldn´t help but thinkabout the remaining 13 CPs,conspicuously unpunched, thatwe were going to miss, includinga huge rappel down a cliff inthe highlands near ChimborazoVolcano and the kayaking stretchthrough the jungle.Huairasinchi literally translates to“the wind´s strength” in Kichwa,alluding to the phenomenalchallenges that we would encounterin this world-class adventure race.For us, the wind dealt us a hardblow when we lost our teammatedays before the competition, andyet another when we discoveredhis replacement was in no shapefor a race of this caliber. Even ifwe had been able to finish the race,I imagine I would still feel thataddictive tug of adventure racing.Somehow you can just never getenough. adventure destinationThe Road Less Traveled:Machu Picchu Via the Salkantay TrekStory and Photos By Jason HeflinBy now most of us have formed alife’s list of adventure travel destinationswe want to visit before wego. That list might live in a MicrosoftWord document, on a Facebookpage, scribbled on a drinknapkin, or just in the recesses ofyour mind. There are some tripsthat make the list over and overagain such as trekking the Himalaya,seeing the great pyramids ofGiza, or climbing Kilimanjaro. Onedestination that kept rising to thetop of my list was Machu Picchu.HistoryRoughly fifty years before ChristopherColumbus sailed acrossthe ocean blue a great citadelwas being built high in the Andesmountains of what is now Peru inSouth America. The Incans namedthis peak Machu Picchu, or OldPeak. It was to be an importantlocale, not only to the civilizationthat carved it’s stone walls,but for those who were to follow.Machu Picchu is situated on asteep mountain ridge 2,000 feetabove the Urubamba river. Thislandmark lies only fifty miles fromCusco, a major Peruvian city. Yet,unlike most other Incan settlements,it was never discovered ordestroyed by the Spanish conquistadorsas they invaded. MachuPicchu was instead abandoned. Itis not known why the residents ofthis sacred city left, or where theywent. Machu Picchu has remainedin remarkably pristine conditionthroughout the past 600 years.The great explorer Hiram Binghamre-discovered this place in 1911and brought the “lost city” to the attentionof the world. Today MachuPicchu is open to the public; it isa heavily traveled tourist attractionthat is seen by thousands of visitorseach year from around the globe.The Road Less TraveledMachu Picchu was on my life list.A few years ago I decided I wasn’tgoing to wait on this one. I didn’twant to visit this remote sanctuaryby tour bus, as is a common practicethese days. Many take what isknown as the Inca Trail, but I soonlearned there is more than one IncaTrail to Machu Picchu. The standardtrail leads the trekker throughthe highlands and up to MachuPicchu in much the same way theInca visited the city. In my life Itend to choose the road less traveledhowever. I was told the traditionalInca Trail was very busy<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 24


and didn’t provide much of a wildernessexperience. So, I opted forthe Salkantay Trek. This alternateroute follows another ancient roadthe Inca used to connect villages.The Salkantay Trek is not your averagemulti-day hike. I chose thisroute for its difficulty and because itgot me so close to some of the highpeaks of the Andes along the way.Most journeys typically start inCusco. This city sprawls throughouta valley which sits at roughly10,000 feet. From Cusco a bus istaken to the village of Mollepata. Atthe bus stop we were offered tea andporridge for breakfast, but opted towait. Once in Mollepata we weretaken to a local woman’s home. Shehad several picnic-type tables in acourtyard and fed us well for onlya few dollars. Then we were off.The trek took us up a typical mountainslope in the Andes. Dry anddusty trails snake up the hillsidesthrough low scrub brush. Bandanaswere a necessity to keep from swallowingtoo much of the dust. Oncewe reached our lunch spot we hadour first glimpse of the high peaks.The <strong>view</strong> of these glacier coveredgoliaths was breathtaking. Thatnight we camped above 12,000 feetin an abandoned village. In theseremote mountains the milky waylooks as if it were painted acrossthe sky with a brush. Dense starclusters and bright constellationskept us out of our tents until late.The next morning we began thetoughest part of the trek, the climbto Salkantay Pass. This pass liesat 14,763 feet and tested our lungpower as did the hours of switchbacksthat took us up to the crest.All the while porters with hugeloads on their backs passed theflatlanders as if we were standingstill. Once at the pass, however,the <strong>view</strong> was reward enough forthe tough journey. Standing underthe glaciers of the massive Salkantaypeak and watching chunksof ice break loose in the middaysun would not be soon forgotten.That afternoon the trail led usdown a huge valley and into a jungleclimate. Crossing rushing riverson handmade log bridges andencountering local Peruvians goingabout their daily business wasa great way to see the rural culture.The women braid their silkyblack hair into long strands downtheir back. Their clothing is madefrom bright colors that stand outagainst the sea of green jungle. Themen are dressed in more earthy<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> is a GreenZine 25


tones and typically walk while allowingthe women to ride a horse.This area also has a large varietyof orchids and rare wildlife speciessuch as the spectacled bear.That night we camped in a smallvillage clinging to the mountainside.With chickens peckingaround our tents, we knew wewere in for an early awakening.After the roosters roused us thefollowing morning we continuedour journey downward from thesehigh jungles to a valley where weneeded to cross a major river at themining town of Oroya. The riverwas swollen and full of whitecapsfrom the summer snowmelt. Therewas no bridge and the current wastoo strong to wade across so wetook the cable system. Crouchingin a small metal basket we clung toour backpacks as we were zippedacross the river by hand, using apulley system. Once across theriver it was that person’s obligationto pull the next traveler over.The trek then leads into AguasCalientes, named so for its naturalthermal baths. There we optedto stay in small hotels. We haddecided ascend to Machu Picchufrom Aguas Calientes using thestone staircase carved by the Inca.The climb put us at the gates justbefore dawn. Be aware that thiscan take a few hours, and is a realworkout. We took on the gruelingclimb only to arrive in the parkinglot just after the first bus load oftourists disembarked and we hadto wait to get in. Still, the sunriseover these ancient stone walls hasno equal. Just don’t be disappointedif the high jungle fog robs you.Old PeakOne day is enough to see the entiremountain top as long as you areprepared to do some serious walking.Remember Machu Picchu wasa city, and it is fairly large. Takeplenty of water, which can be purchasedas you enter. The gate guardiansare very strict about what canenter Machu Picchu. Only “small”backpacks and bags can be takenin, and no food. We saw a Germanman get his bag taken while entering,and although you get your itemsback at the end of the visit, he wasnot happy to see it taken from him.Visitors can either take a guidedtour, or explore the ruins on theirown. We had an excellent guidewho enlightened us on the history<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 26


and culture of the Inca people wholived here. A good guide can makeall the difference. Pictures can betaken in most areas, but there arecertain spots where feet may nottread. There are a number of whistleblowing rangers that patrol theruins. They are more than happyto let you know you’ve stepped onprohibited soil. Besides the whistleblowers the mountain is hometo others. These others have beenroaming these hillsides longer thanthe rangers though. They are the llamasof Machu Picchu. They grazeon the grasses here and are just aboutas loved as the monument itself.Another popular side excursionwhile at Machu Picchu is to hikeup Huayna Picchu, the picturesquemountain in the background of thetypical postcard photo. This cantake a few hours though, and thereis a controlled number of visitorsthat can climb it each day. Get inline for Huayna Picchu early in themorning to ensure a trip up. An exposedpath leads up the blade-likeridge of the lush mountainside. Ittakes you through a small cave toan alter. There is no short supply ofalters at Machu Picchu, which leadsarchaeologists to believe this wasa place where the Inca practicedsacrifice. It is not recommended toclimb Huayna Picchu when conditionsare wet. People have fallento their death from its steep trail.With all this in mind, keep youreyes, ears, and heart open whileyou walk these ancient paths. MachuPicchu was a spiritual place forthe Inca. Find a small patch of stoneor grass, look out over this massivestone citadel, and breathe in one ofthe most beautiful places on Earth.Planning Your TripGuided trips can be purchasedin Cusco or before you leaveyour home country. Be warnedthough, prices vary greatly. Doyour homework before arrivingif you plan to book your trip incountry. This could save you quitea bit of money. June through Augustis the height of the dry seasonand is the ideal time to visit Peru.There are daily flights to Cuscofrom Peru’s capital of Lima. A traindeparts regularly for Machu Picchuso you won’t have any problemgetting to Aguas Calientes to startyour visit. To make the most of yourtrip, study up before arriving. I remember being a young boy siftingthrough countless articles ofthe National Geographic magazinereading about amazing journeys ofexploration to untouched places inthe world. I could spend hours lookingthrough the maps and picturesimagining myself hanging from thetreetops, hiking through the junglesin search of some lost species or insearch of a new cure. What I didnot think about was the countlesshours spent preparing for theseexpeditions, or the overwhelmingstress that the leaders of the expeditionsmust have felt trying to putsuch a huge trip together.With some key strategic planningand preparation you will be readyto go from day hikes or adventureracing sprint distances to multifaceted life changing expeditionsand expedition length races. In thecoming months I will break downPlanning For An ExpeditionBy Branndon Bargoeverything that it takes to preparefor and plan your own expeditionincluding choosing a team, logisticsof an expedition such as food,equipment and permits, Physicaland mental conditioning, sponsorshipand media, and lastly takingexpeditions for a greater cause.First, we must know exactly whatconstitutes an expedition comparedto an everyday adventure. A simpledictionary definition of an expeditionis a journey or voyage madefor a specific purpose. Anothermore detailed definition would bean adventure that requires permits,dealing with local customs andregulations, medical requirementssuch as vaccinations, several daysof air travel, followed by land travel,and then spending multiple days,weeks or months climbing a mountain,kayaking or sailing an ocean,running a river or reaching the finishline of an expedition race.In this installment I will discusschoosing the right expedition foryou. You may already have a bigtrip in mind. A childhood dreamthat you have always wanted to accomplish,but you first have to askyourself some important questions.First, what is the goal for this expedition?Is your objective to doresearch, raise money, to climb amountain, to win a race, or a combinationof objectives? If for example you are climbinga mountain do you know how tosafely stop yourself from slidingdown the mountain by using theself-arrest technique,or if someonefalls into a crevasse do you knowhow to set up an anchor and pulleysystem to rescue them? If youare taking a white water kayakingtrip do you know how to use theEskimo roll to right yourself, or ifyou are sea kayaking how to navigatewhere you are going and stillfactor in the tides and currents? Ifyou are caving do you know howmany sources of light you shouldcarry, or how to ascend or descendinto the cave, or what gear youshould bring with you? The skillsyou need to know before settingout on an expedition are absolutelynecessary. The expedition shouldbe considered the final exam aftermany hours of studying.There were times I found myselfin bad situations early on in myquest for adventure seeking becausemy desire and exuberanceto be in the outdoors far exceededmy knowledge. I remember onesuch instance when I was hitchhikingand backpacking around GreatBritain. I really wanted to go to aremote area of Scotland so I mademy way up to the northern less visitedislands to explore the beautifulIsle of Skye. I hitchhiked to thebase of one of the more ominouslooking mountains on the island. Atransplant from Liverpool told methat he enjoyed picking up foreignhitchhikers but since it was Sundaymost of the locals were not on theroad. He tried to talk me out of thehike because he could see it wasgetting late, and knew that in Scotlandand especially this far norththe weather can change quickly forthe worse. I told him that I wouldmove fast and ignored his advice.As I began my climb, I realized thiswas going to be a tough hike. Themud was horrendous, and was slowgoing. I thought it would be a goodidea to speed things up by droppingmy pack off so that I could movefaster. I left my pack near a groupof rocks and then started to jog topick up the pace as it was becomingevening and getting dark. Icould feel that I was getting closerto the summit, but as I nearedthe rocky pinnacle of the summitthe clouds began to move in, andthey did not look friendly. I knewthen that it was not to be. I beganto descend and quickly realizedthat I was lost. For the next severalhours, I searched for my backpackthat contained my food, water,extra layers, and a sleeping bag.I had a very weak headlamp, andhad no idea where my gear couldbe. With no skill or knowledge ofmy own I stumbled upon my packand quickly put on extra layersas I was becoming hypothermic,and ate and drank knowing that Ilucked out in this situation. Soonafter I zipped up my sleeping bag,it began to pour down rain as it sooften does in Scotland. I proceededto get soaked since I did not bring atent, and after hours of being miserable,and my bag almost floatingaway with me in it I decided I hadhad enough and headed down.I mention this story because if Ihad not found my pack my situationcould have been much worse.Many people suffer hypothermia,heat exhaustion, or even deathbecause they think their fitness,excitement, or some show on theDiscovery channel will be enoughto get them through. I got myselfinto this situation because I wantedto climb a mountain, and that is allI knew. I did not have the propergear, judgment, decision makingskills and lacked understandingof what it took to climb a mountainsafely. With some necessaryknowledge this trip could havebeen much more enjoyable. Hereare some ways in which you cangain experience.First, begin taking lots of short trips.Take challenging day hikes andtrail runs in your local state and nationalparks. Second, buy outdoorgear and learn how to use it. Third,if you want to take longer trips youwill need to be mentored or taught.Research schools and find one thatis reputable, and has a safe andlong standing record. Fourth, joinan outdoor club and begin takingtrips and meeting like-minded individualsthat can accompany you onlonger outings. And lastly, as youbegin to build and gain confidenceyou will feel ready for greater challengesand longer trips.Though these steps seem to be prettysimple and common knowledgeyou would be surprised how manypeople I have seen in the outdoorsthat have put themselves in dangeroussituations because they did nottake the time to learn and gain thenecessary experience.Planning for you own expedition isone of the most rewarding thingsyou can do in the outdoors. It willteach you how to become a betterleader, a better team member, abetter communicator, and developgreater decision- making skills.But it will only come after hardwork and commitment. The Coastal ChallengeRainforest RunOn February 1st, 76 people gatheredat the Costa Rican coastaltown of Quepos with one thingin common. They were about tocross the start line for the 5th AnnualCoastal Challenge (www.TheCoastalChallenge.com).The Coastal Challenge- RainforestRun, is a 6 day stage running raceset along Costa Rica’s tropical Pacificcoastline using both the Talamancas,a coastal mountain rangein the Southwest corner of thecountry, and the verdant rainforestas the habitat for 225 kilometers ofpure physical and emotional challenge.Each stage is designed totake advantage of the topography,and the stunning beauty of the mostrural and undeveloped places insouthern Costa Rica.Of the 76 athletes gathered, somewere well known in the enduranceracing community like, Scott Jurek,5 time Winner and course recordholder of The Western States100, or Robyn Benincasa, <strong>World</strong>Champion <strong>Adventure</strong> Racer inboth the Eco-Challenge and theRaid Gauloises. Some of the athleteswere ultra-runners looking toextend their experience over morethan a day, and some were IronManathletes looking for the next bigchallenge. cent- SHAKE RATTLE ANDBOILA three hour bus ride to the coastof Costa Rica is always a beautifulride unless you are a nervousracer…And then the sun came out with thehumidity and we started to boil. Soboil we did until we reached thethick part of the rainforest.And then it was up and up andup through overgrown forest withnothing insight but the thin trailand the racer in front of you.Camp was in a beautiful hiddenvalley that we had to access via apull cart to get across a river. Dinnerwas subdued as many left theirenergy on the course.Day 2 –39k- 2250m Ascent- SLIP,SLIDIN, CLIMBIN, AND THEOCEANAs soon as it was light-- we wereoff!We ran down a scenic dirt road andthen immediately turned into thejungle and hit a hill that went up formiles -STRAIGHT UP, IN MUDAND MUCK THAT SUCKEDTHE SHOES RIGHT OFF YOURFEET.…our second time station had localsproviding fresh coconut juice(they just cut the side off with amachete and handed it to you).As I sign off, I am enjoying thebreeze off the ocean in Dominical,one of Costa Rica’s prime surfingspots. Life is good and yes, everyoneis very tired but very happyDay 3- 52.2k, 2450m Ascent -RIVER, CLIMB, BOIL ANDBEACHThis race is hard, and I mean realhard.Scott Jurek is amazed on a dailybasis that all of the athletes lookfresh each morning as we start yetanother stage.Camp was subdued at night andthe only thing that was able to raiseany energy from the exhausted racerswas the offer of free beer andpop from the race directors. Dinneras usual was hot, delicious andeaten greedily.Day 4- 37.5k 2950m Ascent- HITTHE WALL<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 32


We “hit the wall” which is best describedas climbing straight up arain forest covered sky scrapper, ormaybe a lot of them, as the entirefirst climb was 1000 meters (that’s3000 feet) in just 2 kilometers ofdistance.Once we topped out and took amuch needed breath or ten, we thenwere met with incredible <strong>view</strong>s ofthe Telamanca mountain range andthe ocean 3000 feet below.Feb 5 -47.4k -1450m Ascent -IN-CREDIBLY, BEAUTIFULLYLONG!Our boat driver picking up on thesudden interest in the parrot proceededto slow down and we quicklyspotted white faced monkeysthat were eating the fruit off thetree hanging upside down. Then itwas the crocodile on the bank layingas still as the log floating justfeet away from the boat--until thelog revealed itself as yet anothercrocodile.Long, Long, Long. This freakingstage hurt it was so long. Miles orKilometers it did not matter theyjust did not seem to go by fastenough.As always, when the going getstough good things happen.Feb 6 -FINAL Day -23.7k – 450mAscent - The fat lady is SING-ING and DANCING!It is impossible that the same peoplewho just ran the day beforewere the same people who showedup at today’s starting line.The start of the race was...wait forit...wait for it...yep, freaking UPHILL!And yet we soon descended andproceeded to run a river in kneehigh crystal clear, cool water.There are finishing styles galore...the runner who jogs the entire raceto then sprint the last 10 yards, therunner who sprints the entire raceto then jog the last 10 yards, thereare those that ignore the cheeringcrowd, and those who play to thecrowd like they are conducting anorchestra of applause.The post race dinner was on thebeach lit by candles in luminarysacks and a roaring log fire. It didnot take long for the ever presentjuices and electrolyte drinks to besupplemented with that wonderfulinvention by those monastic monks–BEER.The 6th Annual Coastal Challengewill be hosting “The Route ofFire”, a 6 day stage race featuringCosta Rica’s Northwestern coastand volcanic regions. trainingNutrition: Feeding the Machineby Cynthia EngelHow often have you gloriouslysavored a crème filled chocolatecovered Krispy Kreme donut or acheeseburger with fries and a microbrew and said, “THIS is whyI workout so much – so I can eatwhatever I want! “Or what about those of you whoare convinced you should be on thecover of a fitness magazine giventhe amount of time, energy and focusyou put into working out, butyou’re still not ok with that onebulge you see every morning in themirror so you cut back on what youeat because “losing weight is simplya matter of your caloric inputbeing lower than your caloric output”?Over the course of my life as a multisportathlete, I think I’ve lived inboth of those realities just short ofan infinite number of times. Andthe reality was that I was goingnowhere in terms of improving myperformance or in terms of reducingbody fat– in fact I was gainingmore fat the less I ate and the moreI trained!And then I met with sports nutritionexpert and world championadventure racer Cathy Sassin, whotaught me through her Intrafitt program(http://www.intrafitt.com/ )that feeding your body what it isasking of you is vital for it to honorwhat you are asking of it. WhenI chose to trust this process andgave my body the right balance ofnutrients it needed to perform at itsbest, I was astounded at the instantimpact (literally!) it had on my performance,my attitude, my energylevel throughout the day and mybody composition.Maintaining proper nutrition is asimportant for an athlete as trainingand resting is in any lifestyle,regardless of intensity or performancelevel. And it is probably themost neglected or misunderstoodaspect of athletic performance.Our bodies are extraordinarilyresilient ecosystems that are constantlyseeking homeostasis or balance.When we subject them to thedaily demands of playing, workingand training, we are constantlythrowing them out of balance. Andthey are constantly finding ways tore-establish that balance so thatthey can keep doing what we askof them. In doing so, our bodiesmake adjustments to the speed thatthey choose to burn their energystores (metabolism). They also decidewhich energy stores (muscle,fat from storage (body fat) or sugarfrom our muscles, bloodstream orliver) are most efficient to burn giventhe pattern of what is coming in(food) and what we generally askthem to do for us.The key is to give your body whatit needs consistently so that it cantrust you. It wants to know thatyou will provide it with the protein,carbs, fat and water it needsto give you the energy you demandthroughout the day. When it trustsyou, then it is trusting that it willalways have the various energystores it needs, even in a crisissituation. This allows your metabolismto run faster and feeds theprotein into your heart and skeletalmuscles to grow stronger as youtrain. Whenever the macronutrients,protein, carbs and fats are inshort supply, the body moves intohoarding mode rather than usingthe fat it has stored for energy.Knowing how much protein, fat,carbs and water to eat and drinkand how often to feed your bodyare difficult to know. Here are someguidelines I learned from CathySassin and Intrafitt to get started:• We’ve all heard this…drink lotsof water throughout the day. It’strue! That alone can improve yourperformance instantly!• Eat breakfast every day. No matterwhat. And make protein a moreprominent part of it. If you are thetype that feels nauseous if you eatin the morning, start slowly witheasily digestible foods – smoothieswith protein powder in them forexample – and build up to eatingmore solid foods in the morning.The food we provide our body firstthing in the morning is what establishesthe rate at which our bodydecides it can burn energy andwhat kind it will burn throughoutthe day. • Listen to your body – if it sendsout an alarm (fatigue, irritability,grumbling stomach, lethargy, forgetfulness…),feed it right away!It’s warning you and by the timeyou actually get these signals, yourbody is already going into hibernationmode.• Graze over the course of a dayrather than simply eating 3 meals.Try eating 4 or 5 smaller balancedmeals instead.• When you feed your body,always give it a combination ofprotein, fat and carbs. Fat providesyour body with a long termenergy source because it breaksit down slowly. Only providing itwith carbs will cause your bloodsugar levels to jump because of theinstant energy it can provide. Butwithout something to balance thatout, it will drop just as quickly andyou’ll be back in hoarding modeagain.• Always have a snack composedof protein, fat and carbs ready forafter your workout. And eat it immediatelywhen you finish yourworkout.• Eat during any workouts longerthan an hour. Feed yourself smallportions of a high protein energybar (I eat ¼ of an energy bar everyhalf hour or so).• Have high protein/ lower sugarenergy bars available in your car,in your bag and at work so that ifyou are caught with no food andyour body starts yelling at you,you can feed it something balancedright away rather than going for ahigh carb or high fat snack.• Work with a sports nutritionistto dial in the ideal balance of proteinsto fats to carbs for your ownfitness and performance goals.While it may initially seem counter-intuitiveto eat more to improveboth body composition and performance,it makes more sense whenwe look at it from our body’s perspective.Because my body truststhat I will give it what it wants andhow it wants it, my metabolismhas increased significantly and mybody now chooses to burn storedfat sooner. As a result, I have becomeleaner and my performancehas increased dramatically, withouthaving made any changes tomy actual workouts. Five femaleadventure athletes who’vesurvived life-affirming struggleshave launched a foundation to grantthe wishes of other women who’vehad medical or traumatic setbacksin their lives. Invoking the nameof the Greek goddess of war andwisdom, the group has dubbed itseffort “Project Athena.”Project Athena founders say theirorganization will grant “Athenaships”,which are similar to scholarships,that will completely fundand outfit the adventurous wishesof each recipient. Their mission isquite simple. “Someone may wantto trek to Everest Base Camp orrun a marathon,” said co-founderRobin Benincasa, ”Through ourown experiences, we know thehopelessness survivors battle. It isour intent to honor that by helpingthese women achieve their life longdreams of an adventure.”Once you’ve learned more aboutthese amazing and inspiring womenwho founded Project Athena,you will understand why their selfproclaimedtitles are guaranteedto bring a smile, but why they are“jobs” these adventure warriorstake seriously.Robin Benincasa, AKA “Ministerof Dreams”, has competed in morethan 35 expedition-length adventureraces. She has claimed top5 finishes in most of those races,including winning EcoChallengeBorneo in 2000. Benincasa wasdiagnosed with severe osteoarthritisin her hip and underwent hip resurfacingsurgery in August 2007.She captains co-ed adventure racingteam Merrell/Zanfel <strong>Adventure</strong>and works full time as a San Diegofirefighter.Danelle Ballengee, “Seraphim ofSurvival”, has won world championshipsin mountain running,snowshoeing and adventure racingover the past decade. She was alsopart of the winning team for PrimalQuest in 2004. In December 2006,Ballengee survived a near deathexperience after taking a fall whiletraining near Moab, Utah. Shespent most of 2007 recovering, butreturned to competition and tookfirst place in the women’s solo divisionof the <strong>Adventure</strong> Xstream adventurerace. In August 2008, shebegan a new adventure – as momto baby Noah!Melissa Cleary, “Angel of Hope”,was left bed bound for months aftera car accident years ago. “I remembertelling myself that when I gotbetter, I would never sit still again,”said Cleary. Since that vow, shehas run more than 40 marathons,including Nepal’s Hillary/TenzingMarathon on Mt. Everest and China’sGreat Wall Marathon. Despitehaving Rheumatoid Arthristis, sheruns every day. Cleary works withBenincasa as a San Diego firefighter(she drives the engine!).Louise Cooper, “Chief InspirationOfficer”, was diagnosed withbreast cancer in 1998. The cancerwas so aggressive, experts said itwas guaranteed to return. Cooperis going strong and has finishedseven Ironman Triathlons, and justas many EcoChallenge adventureraces. Now, she plans to climb thehighest summit on each of the sevencontinents. Four down, three togo! She was diagnosedwith cancer not once – butTWICE! Surviving wasn’t enoughfor Debout. In July 2008, she wasthe first woman to cross the finishline at Barb’s Half Ironman Triathlonin Northern California. Shenow resides in California and is aphysical therapist.The foundation has awarded twoAthenaships in its first 6 months.The first was to San Diego firefighter,Lonnie Kitch. She was diagnosedwith stage 2 breast cancerin May of 2004. “I went from thefire line to the operating room,” saidKitch, “I didn’t feel like fighting Ijust wanted it to go away.” But itdidn’t. After three surgeries in sixweeks, four and a half months ofChemotherapy and six weeks ofRadiation, Kitch was weak andachey. “During my recovery I hada lot of time to reflect,” she said,”I thought what would I want to doif I make it through this?” As afirefighter, Kitch had many opportunitiesto backpack. And, had exploredmany trails with her husbandof 24 years. “One of my dreams isto hike the Grand Canyon,” she realized.So, this past September theAthena Project made it happen forKitch. “I hold the vision of the fullmoon rising over the grandeur ofthe canyon in my heart everyday,”said Kitch,” I am so gratefulto all my team members for takingthis time out of their lives to experiencethis journey with me. Theirkindness, camaraderie, compassionand caring spirits were remarkable.They are all an inspiration for meto keep moving forward with myhealth goals.” While Kitch saysthis was life changing for her, shehopes it will be for others too.“This GRAND experience has givenme the courage and motivationto change my attitude and my life.I hope to inspire other recipients totake on their own challenge!”And, Project Athena is just gettingstarted. Next up on the adventurewish recipient list is Kerrie Larson-Kerkman. “My dream is to run themarathon on the Great Wall of China,”said Larson-Kerkman. She hadspinal fusion three years ago due toa degenerative spinal condition. “Ihave been in physical therapy for atotal of 8 years,” she said. Prior tosurgery, she had lost enough functionin her right leg that a 10 minutewalk was grueling. How The Barkley Tamed Me!By Jon BarkerWhere do I start?After training my head off for severalmonths I got sick with the flutwo weeks before the race; I meanin bed for two days, missing workflu - not a cold. Felt worse thanLeptospirosis, flu... you get the picture...So, I’m not blaming my failure totallyon that but some weird stuffhappened and I think this is classicBarkley stuff: I was still feelingweak and hazy the Saturday beforethe race and debating bailingon it but couldn’t pull the triggerand decided to stress my brain outabout the whole thing instead. NowI don’t know if the Barkley Gremlinswere at work or too much Nyquilmixed with too much Dayquilbut I got in a real funk. I have noidea what depression feels like andI hope I never do but this felt awful.I had no sense of taste or smelleither.Photos by Peter JollesSo come Friday, I was feeling alot better. Funk 99% gone, still notmuch taste or smell but feeling fairlystrong and spirits were good...Loop one: moving well. A bigbunch of us stuck together (includingAndrew Thompson, the AT recordholder) through most of it. Anold AR pal Greg Eason who hadthree looped it in the past was thereand I stuck with him and he gaveme some instruction to the idiosyncrasiesof the route while we weremoving. I thought it was sinkingin... Towards the end of the fist loopI fall off the pack a little and did thelast 5 or 6 miles by myself then aguy called Joe Decker catches upwith me (www.joe-decker.com)and we stick together coming in offthe first loop. A quick word aboutthe terrain; certainly not criminalbut very tough, steep, hands digginginto the dirt steep. are essential to the success of thisthing!down hills (it had been raining so itwas also slick). Even with temps inthe 40s, I got very warm and probablya little dehydrated. As a oneloop training run/hike it would bea lot of fun and a great sense of accomplishmentwhen you finish butknowing you’ve got four more ofthese to do... I didn’t think the navwas too difficult, certainly the secondhalf with the really big climbswasn’t bad at all but I underestimatedwhat the dark would doand didn’t even think about what“pea soup” fog would do with thedark...I finished loop one in 9:17 whichI was OK with but my legs feltlike jello. Certainly the illness hadan effect but I really don’t think Idid enough long, long trainingsand overnights and back to back12 hour hikes which I now thinkThe main group had already headedout on loop 2. And by luck; Joewas heading out the same time asme. He had been up there a weekprior and had scouted the courseout several times (this, I now knowis absolutely essential for any formof success). I figured if I could stickwith Joe I might be OK in the dark.Joe lost me within about 10 minutesas he power hiked up the firsthill and my legs turned from jelloto water... I persevered, got bookone and headed to book two knowingthere were some “sketchy” areasahead. The first one cost meabout 30 minutes of scratchingabout through some fierce somebriers. The next one cost me about2-1/2 hours of bush whacking up amurderously steep hill and gettingmisplaced before stumbling backon the “trail”. At this point it hadtaken me 6 1/2 hours to do what Ihad done the previous loop in 2-1/2hours and it affected me mentallyas I was already physically tired.(Quick side note: I had run a longrun of only three hours in my newINOV-8 320’s which are a fineshoe BUT not the way to do it. Leftfoot fine in fact as fine as I can rememberfeeling during a long runbut right foot had 4 or 5 blisters andthat had a mental effect on me aswell. “How am I going to do another24+ hours of this?” As youcan see, I was already resigned tothree loops...). So this was the lastbail out point for a long time andI had already realized that I mightnot make the cut off for the secondloop so I took the bail out and guesswhat?Yep, got lost again! In the fog, Imissed a critical turn off. It also<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> is a May GreenZine 2009 42


did not help that the map was notvery accurate. There are hundredsof old jeep and 4-wheel trails goingall over the place. So I wanderaround for about 4 hours, swearing,whimpering a bit, cursing thewhole world in general and, believeit or not, come right back towhere I started the bail out. I was solucky, I didn’t even realize where Iwas until I “chanced” a side trailand came to one of only two waterdrops on the whole course! (BTW,did I mention that the fog was sothick you could hardly see yourhand in front of your face? Howgood was the Brunton L3 headlampin that???).I decide at this point that I’m goingback on the course as I obviouslycouldn’t bail out and I’d just haveto do a 20+ hour 2nd loop or, atleast, get to the next bail out whichshould be a lot easier when I seea headlamp approaching. Now Ihadn’t seen or heard anybody for atlast eight hours so I was curious tosee who it was. An old timer, JohnDeWalt appears, the last person tostart loop 2. He’s the oldest finisherof Hard Rock and has been doingthe Barkley since 1988!!! He toldme that he scouts for a week beforethe race EVERY year and knowsthe place like the back of his hand.So he says, “Follow me” and wepromptly get lost again...We can’t find our way to a simplesaddle to hit a simple ridge (wellfairly simple during the day withno fog)... After stumbling aroundfor another couple of hours we decideto head back down to the bailout and, thankfully this time, withJohn’s help, we go the correct routeand get out. My second loop of onlytwo books took almost 14 hours.My first loop of 11 books only took9:17. It’s a great group of people.The RD is a nut but fun also.The course is not as intimidatingnow that I am somewhat familiarwith it but knowing you have to hitcertain points again and again fryyou mentally (Testicle Spectacle,Rat Jaw, Big Hell, Danger Dave’sClimbing Wall).Would I do it again? YES, absolutely,if I can get picked again BUT alot different preparation.What would I do different? As we looked out on the water forwhat to do next, the sun made itsway down behind the tree covithappened to me!Run AgroundStory by Chance ReadingOne summer weekend a few yearsback, I went with my girlfriend tovisit her family and spend a relaxingweekend in northern California.They live in a small towneast of San Francisco on the delta,an expansive waterway that spiderwebs in from the coast all the wayto Sacramento. These waterwaysare surrounded by levees and someof the richest farming land in theworld. Ships and personal craftsswarm the waterways passing oldshipping centers, finding fishingholes and occasionally even wakeboarding.A good family friend, CaptainKurt, came over on Saturday afternoonand offered a quick sailboatride around the delta before dinner.My girlfriend and I gladly acceptedthis opportunity to get out on thewater. I bounced upstairs, dumpedmy pockets, grabbed my wallet andwas out the door in shorts, a t-shirtand my flip-flops.A short drive over a draw bridgeand a couple of levees brought usto a neat little marina located in asmall nest of trees. We parked andheaded down to the boat. Althougha bit dusty from lack of use, the 21foot sail boat seemed in overallgreat shape and we gladly pulledour small ice chest aboard and wereoff in just minutes.We motored slowly out of the littlecove and into a larger arm of thedelta heading back towards town.There was a mild crosswind andthe temperature was just starting tocool off the warm day. We ziggedand zagged across the wide channeland made steady headway. I relaxedand enjoyed being out on thewater, watching a handful of boatshead in for the day. The sun wasgetting lower in the sky and youcould already tell the sunset wasgoing to be fantastic.As we moved across the water inone of our zigs, we held our path abit long to avoid turning back intoa motorboat that was heading ourdirection. Captain Kurt turned thewheel and loosened the sail, gettingready to turn to our right. Theboat, leaning to the left in the wind,started to swing its nose around andthen abruptly stopped.On the delta, silt and sand linethousands of miles of waterways.This nutrient rich bed is what hasmade Central California one of therichest agricultural locations in theworld. Unfortunately, this bed alsoshifts almost daily which makes itvery difficult to keep up with. Wewere easily 50 yards from shore,but the deep shipping channel waslocated slightly to our right and ourkeel was stuck in the mud.Not panicked, Captain Kurt workedto straighten us out and get us facedtowards the deeper part of the channel.The gentle cross winds didn’tseem so gentle anymore. The windkept our sail from swinging over tothe right side, which would haveallowed us to sail back towardsthe channel. The harder the windsblew, the more the boat leaned overto the left, which raised the keeland took us into shallower water.After a few minutes of unsuccessfulmaneuvering, Captain Kurtjumped into the shallow water toattempt the release the keel. Hepulled one of the mast lines in thewater with him and used it to pullthe boat over, leaning hard to theleft. At this point, we were “allhands on deck” and I was manningthe wheel for the moment. Ourcaptain then tried to walk the mastaround so that we would be facingtowards the opposite shore. Thisseemed like a good plan, but everytime the keel came up out of thesilt the wind blew the boat closerto shore.I jumped in the water to help outand my girlfriend took the wheel.Captain Kurt again pulled the mastdown while I tried to push the boatback to deeper water. Nothing.My girlfriend jumped in and weboth pushed against the boat, butthe wind was too much. Then ourcaptain reminded us that the deltais affected by the tides and the tidewas going out. to spend the night exactly where itwas. We turned our attention to theshore and looked towards a quickhike out. There was a thick greenlayer of trees and low shrubs liningthe small beach. On either side ofthe beach, the growth extended outinto the water which would haverequired a swim to access the farside. We began to pick our waythrough the foliage and things soonbecame messy. The sandy beachtransitioned to a swampy puzzleof unbelievably dense, overgrownjungle.Photo by Daniel NorrisUsing the weak flashlight on hand,our forward motion was slow atbest. My flip flops were now disappearinginto knee deep, thick gooeymud, while my hands were workingovertime solving the branch puzzlethat blocked my path. After about30 minutes of painstakingly slowprogress, hunger, and darkness, -full-blown frustration had set in.From the boat, it seemed as thoughthe road was not that far, less than amile or so. But now surrounded byblackness, our movements becamea prisoner to the path of least resistance.Finally, we saw a light anda break in the brush. There was aboat. It was the Coastguard! Andthey were shining a light directlyon our sailboat.ered levees. I was really regrettingdumping my pockets beforeI left the house. My cell phonedidn’t make the trip and a quickcount showed that all three of ushad made the same mistake. Wemanaged to flag down a boat inthe dusky light, a couple of fishermanheading in for the day. Theycouldn’t get close enough to help,due to the shallow water we werecurrently standing in, but we askedthem to please call the coast guardwho were stationed only a mile orso upstream. They made the calland moved on their way.We decided to abandon ship. CaptainKurt threw the anchor, just incase, and we gathered our belongings,including a flash light fromthe “emergency kit” and locked upthe boat. The tide was droppingfast and the boat was going to haveWe brushed off the fact that we justmade a complete circle through thejungle because we thought we wererescued. We waded out in the waterto get closer to the large Coastguardboat, yelling our explanationover the loud roar of the engines.We were asked to keep our distanceand were told that we wouldnot be able to board the boat. Theycould not get the large vessel closeto shore due to shallow water andprotocol did not allow us to swim<strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> May 2009 56


out to meet them.After a few moments of disgust,we accepted the fact that we weregoing to have a make a second attemptat the hike out, hopefully withbetter aim. Captain Kurt asked theCoastguard to call home and nicelyask his wife to come pick us up.Later, we would have a good laughbecause of this phone call. Unbeknownstto me, this was apparentlynot all that strange of a situation forCaptain Kurt, or his wife.We set a solid, perpendicular paththrough the jungle this time andmade every effort to keep withit. The “path of least resistance”no longer applied. All three of uswere completely soaked, starving,bleeding from various branchencounters and starting to feel therapid temperature drop. Shiveringmy way along, working to eek outthe small amount of light comingfrom our weak flashlight, I noticedthat we were approaching a breakin the thick jungle and all I couldsee was water.My first thought was that we haddone another circle in the jungleand I was spending the night onthe beached sailboat. But, alas, werealized that we had actually beenon an island. Very uncommon forthis section of the delta, this islandwas fairly large and explained ourearlier circle back to the sailboat.This time, we saw the road on topof the levee across the way. Therewas only one way out of this mess.I put my wallet back in my mouth,where it had been for the last littlewhile in a completely failed attemptto keep the contents somewhat dry.I also figured it would be the onlyplace that I wouldn’t lose it to theswamp gods. We did a double takefor any boats and proceeded tomake the 100 yard swim.I worked to keep my imaginationon positive things, like dinner anda warm blanket, but this was a bitscary. Not only was any movingvessel a real danger, but swimmingthat far across a current, when coldand tired and in the complete darkness,is not my idea of fun. Although,neither was spending thenight on the beached sailboat, soacross I swam.We finally reached the far bank andwere again greeted by thick, densejungle. This was sloped upward tothe road at the top of the levee, sowe were saved from anymore postholingthrough swamp mud, whichwas nice.About three hours after beachingthe sailboat on our nice little predinner,sunset cruise, we pushedthe last branch aside and steppedon pavement. We walked down aways to an old dock where CaptainKurt’s lovely wife was parkedand waiting for us. She had towelswaiting for us and the car’s heaterwas on high.
