Then Sean started to panic, “Mylight. I don´t have my headlamp, Ileft it with the other pack.”“Keep looking, maybe they packedit,” JJ said calmly.“Nothing. I don´t have it.” Seansaid finally.Fortunately, Pedro had a light onhis bike and a headlamp he couldspare.Into the night, we would ride a good30 minutes through the dense mistand fog offering at most 10 feet ofvisibility, and then we´d hang outwaiting for Pedro. No one wasreally able to tow him anymore.At some point in the night, wecrossed paths with a team on foot,still seeking CP4, brutally lost.Control Point 5: (10-11PM)“Be very careful on this nextdownhill, there is some seriousmud.” The Control Point volunteerwarned us.and downhill.“Can somebody carry mybackpack?” asked Pedro as he laydown on the concrete after climbingback up to the turnoff we missed.“Sure, man.” Sean said, andattached it to his bike.We passed a hacienda and reacheda turnoff and waited for Pedro asdarkness set in completely, lowclouds covered the stars. A haggardlooking team pedaled up, from theadventure category that covers halfthe overall distance. “You see asolo rider down there?” We asked.“Yeah. He is pushing his bike up.”One of the guys said as he crumpledwith exhaustion into the thick grass.He got out his headlamp and theycontinued on.All our headlamps veered towardswhere we imagined the trail to be,but could see only fog. We weresliding all over the place, hittingpatches of mud that sucked in halfour front wheel. At a turnoff weused our tried and true navigationmethod, “So which route has moretire tracks?”As we were inspecting the trail,a huge group of teams arrivedand we raced down some smoothswitchbacks at high speeds withvery little light.
