Marine GenSetsIMO Tier II – Power for the world fleet

Performance, Quality and ServiceMarine GenSetsMAN Diesel & Turbo’s approach to the design and production of GenSets is simplystated: The goal is to remain at the forefront of the world market for GenSets in the500-5,600 kW power range in terms of performance, quality and service. The MAN Diesel & Turbo product development strategyis to design GenSet solutions, which produce energyat the lowest possible cost per kWh – withoutsacrificing the quality. This strategy requires e.g. a resolution of the conflictsinherent in six key market requirements:• Operation on the cheapest fuels available• The longest safe interval between major overhauls• The easiest possible daily maintenance procedure• Reliable power supply under all conditions• Unlimited load patterns – max-load/low-load/no-load• Compliance with worldwide environmental regulationsUnrivalled fuel economyLow fuel oil consumption across the entire load range, combined with a 'Uni-Fuel' concept, is the basis forsuperior operating economy. The 'Uni-Fuel' concept –the running of GenSets on the same heavy fuel oil asused for the vessel’s propulsion engine – is the subjectof a continuous development programme. This is anarea in which the company has not only been an industrypioneer, but also one in which a unique marketposition has been gained.Over many years, a substantial global market sharefor MAN's GenSets has proved that with an innovativeapproach to engine and generator design, MANDiesel & Turbo has achieved the right balance betweenthese needs.Safe and economical transportation of high-value goods, critical cargoes and sensiblecooled or frozen edibles requires efficient, highly reliable and available auxiliarypower. MAN GenSets have for decades earned good reputation by deliveringpower to the world fleet.Indeed, we believe that our current product range describedin this brochure is unsurpassed in terms ofperformance, reliability and economy.2 Marine GenSets Marine GenSets 3

Power RangeGenSet solutions for the 500-5,600 kW spectrumMinimal daily maintenanceThe sophisticated control systems installed on today’smerchant ships permit small crews to operate eventhe largest vessels – provided that ways can be foundto reduce the hours spent on basic maintenance. Forall MAN GenSets, the need for daily maintenance hasbeen reduced to the absolute minimum necessary forreliable, trouble-free operation – and the designersare constantly looking for ways of further reducing themaintenance requirements.Environmental considerationsMAN Diesel & Turbo places a sharp focus on boththe safety and the working environment of ship crewsand the potential effects of its products on the externalenvironment. Thus, the GenSets operate at low vibrationand noise levels for the benefit of the crew. Tools, lifting gear and parts are designed with ergonomicallyconsiderations. Furthermore, the current GenSet programmecomplies with the external environmental requirementsdefined by the IMO Tier II emission level– without requiring exhaust gas aftertreatment.Long intervals between overhaulsTime between major overhauls is up to 20,000 hours– depending on the specific GenSet design and application.Marine GenSetsoutput kWEngine Cylinder (No.) 500 1,000 1,500 2,000 2,500 3,000 3,500 4,000 4,500 5,000L32/44CR 6-10L32/40 6-9L27/38 5-9L28/32H 5-9L21/31 5-8L23/30H 5-9L16/24 5-94 Marine GenSets Marine GenSets 5

Classic Marine GenSetsPrepared for the requirements of tomorrowL23/30H and L28/32H are characterised by:Constant pressure turbochargingThe constant pressure turbocharger system comprisesan exhaust gas receiver, turbocharger, charge-aircooler with water mist catcher and charge-air receiver– the last two incorporated in the frame. The turbochargeris a high-efficiency design, with radial flow gasturbine and radial flow compressor.Lambda controllerA built-in lambda controller greatly increases the unit’sload response ability and limits the fuel oil index duringthe start-up procedure. It reduces the formation ofsmoke and results in cleaner exhaust.Rigid designThe rigid design of the L23/30H and L28/32H engineseries permits step loads of up to 50% in one step.Easy installationInstallation is easy as the engine and the alternator arefitted on a single base frame and connection to externalsystems is problem free. The GenSet is deliveredin a ready-to-start state, speeding up the installationand commissioning process.Established designThe popular L23/30H and L28/32H engines havebeen built in very large numbers. Their monoblockengine frame incorporates cylinder block, crankcase,charge-air receiver, cooling water jacket, camshaftand camshaft drive. The underslung crankshaft keepscombustion and inertia forces within the same component, enhancing the engines' reliability, durability andavailability.Environmentally friendlyIn line with all GenSets from MAN Diesel & Turbo, the L23/30H and L28/32H series meet existing andadopted future exhaust emission requirements. Aswell as low fuel oil and lubrication oil consumption, theengines meet the IMO Tier II emission requirements.Tailor-made solutionsThe GenSets are delivered as complete packages, with the diesel engine and the driven machinery fittedon a common base frame. Streamlined Modular GenSetsDesigned for optimised service friendlinessThe L16/24, L21/31 and L27/38 GenSets are characterised by:Compact sizeThe engines are lower and shorter than the other longstrokeengines in their power class. Therefore they canbe installed in restricted engine room areas withoutproblems.Pipeless designThe front-end box and cylinder units are linked to theengine’s internal oil and water circuits without pipes.Overall, the number of components have been reducedby up to 60%. Fewer sensitive componentsmean even higher reliability.Front-end conceptAll support functions – oil and water pumps, coolers, filters, and safety and regulator valves – are housed in asingle front-end box for easy access and maintenance.Separate cylinder unitsEach complete cylinder assembly – head, piston, linerand connecting rod – can be removed as a unit foreasy maintenance or replacement.Low bearing wearThe connecting rods for L21/31 and L27/38 are ofthe marine head type and designed for low-pressureoperation, resulting in lower wear and a longer life forbearings – for the higher combustion forces in theseengines.Operation on HFOAll engines operate efficiently on inexpensive heavyfuel oil across the whole power spectrum. Since theintroduction of the L16/24 engine, however, the fuel(HFO) has in general decreased in quality and ignitionproperties. This, combined with, in some cases, unexpectedlong intervals with low load operation, hasgenerated some design updates in order to restore theoperational safety margins.Environmentally friendlyThe streamlined generation of GenSet engines havehigh outputs, but low lube oil and fuel oil consumptions. The engines meet the IMO Tier II emission limitsas standard.Optimal operating temperatureThe engine has an integrated cooling water system, which ensures an optimal operating temperatureacross the range, from idle to full load. In addition, the charge-air cooler is equipped with a water mistcatcher, which reduces the amount of condensationin the cooler.Lambda controllerA lambda controller ensures that all injected fuel isburnt, countering internal engine pollution and theincreased wear that might otherwise arise from steploading.Reduced maintenance requirementsThe engines require only minimal daily maintenanceand are designed for 16,000-20,000 service hoursbetween overhauls.Improved noise and vibration insulationThe engine mounts have been specially designed toreduce vibration to a minimum and a very effectivesound insulation has been incorporated in the coredesign of the engine.L16/24 L21/31 L27/3812 Marine GenSets Marine GenSets 13

High Power GenSetsFor efficient upper-range power coverageProven foundation with L32/40 and L32/44CRNew ideas and technical features, however, are basedon MAN Diesel & Turbo’s solid GenSet heritage. Forgenerations, the MAN brand has maintained and developedits position as the leading HFO marine GenSetdesign. Many of the largest container vessels in theworld have their massive electrical energy demandssecured by MAN's high power 32-cm bore GenSets. The basic design of the 32/44CR engine is derivedfrom the successful and very well-proven 32/40. Thisengine series has logged many reliable operatinghours in a vast number of different applications – withinauxiliary power generation and as main propulsionengines for ships, stationary power plant applicationsand for the offshore sector.L32/40 and L32/44CR are characterised by:Efficient operation on HFOThe L32/40 and L32/44CR range of engines has beendesigned to run on fuel oils (with a viscosity of up to700 cSt at 50°C)Constant pressure turbochargerThe engine’s turbocharger is a constant pressure systemconsisting of an exhaust gas receiver, turbocharger,charge-air cooler and charge-air receiver.Robust engine designThe cylinder head combines low temperature at thecombustion chamber side and high mechanicalstrength, thus permitting the high firing pressure requiredfor optimal fuel consumption to be absorbedsafely. The main bearings, through bolts and cylinderhead bolts, put the engine frame under compressivepre-stress. The result is outstanding componentreliability in spite of the high firing pressure.Elimination of bore polishingThe liner is equipped with a separate, jet-bore-cooledfire ring. This ring and the top of the piston have beendesigned so that coke deposits cannot come into contactwith the cylinder wall, effectively eliminating borepolishing.Low consumption of lube oilThe piston is a composite with steel crown and castironskirt. The mechanical strength of the skirt ensuresoptimal running of the piston rings. This, combinedwith the rigid cylinder liner, results in a low, constantconsumption of lubricating oil.Minimal maintenanceThe need for daily maintenance has been reducedto a minimum. The standard recommended intervalbetween major overhauls is 12,000 hours for cylinderhead and 24,000 hours for piston rings.L32/40 L32/44CR20 Marine GenSets Marine GenSets 21
