MASTER’S DEGREE ANDCERTIFICATE PROGRAMSSpecializationsThe MS in management degree program <strong>of</strong>fers 13 specializations,each covering subject areas relevant to today’s career fields.Each specialization prepares students for one <strong>of</strong> several possiblecareer paths, depending on the student’s background andemployer criteria.AccountingThe accounting specialization covers a broad range <strong>of</strong> accountingrelatedstudies, especially in the areas <strong>of</strong> financial accounting,fraud detection and accounting ethics, management accounting,auditing process, income taxation, accounting information systems,and special topics that combine in-depth studies in managementscience and accounting.PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONSuccessful completion <strong>of</strong> the accounting specialization may satisfythe education requirements for candidacy for the Certified PublicAccountant (CPA) examination. Educational requirements to sitfor the CPA exam vary among states. Students are responsible forstaying abreast <strong>of</strong> the current requirements <strong>of</strong> the state in whichthey will sit for the exam or practice pr<strong>of</strong>essionally.ACADEMIC PREPARATIONStudents interested in the accounting specialization must havecompleted 15 credits <strong>of</strong> accounting coursework with a grade <strong>of</strong>C or better in each course before enrolling in any graduate levelaccounting course.CAREER PATHS Public accountant or auditorAccounting managerInternal control/forensics accounting specialistManagement accountantGovernment accountant or auditorInternal auditorFinancial, budget, or management analystFraud examinerPARTNERSHIPAn articulation agreement between the Graduate School<strong>of</strong> Management and Technology and UMUC’s School <strong>of</strong>Undergraduate Studies allows students who completed theirundergraduate degree at UMUC with a major in accountingto reduce their total coursework for both degrees by up to6 credits (two courses), completing both degrees with a total<strong>of</strong> 150 credits <strong>of</strong> coursework. Details are provided on p. 25.Criminal Justice ManagementThe criminal justice management specialization provides thefoundation necessary for graduates to assume roles <strong>of</strong> increasingresponsibility within the criminal justice system, in both privateand public settings, as well as to continue studies at the doctoralor pr<strong>of</strong>essional level. The curriculum provides an understanding<strong>of</strong> the entire criminal justice system and the management<strong>of</strong> organizations within that system and emphasizes leadership,management, and cross-agency collaboration.
