All UMUC students must thereforeensure that they have some type <strong>of</strong>Internet access. This access may bethrough use <strong>of</strong> a UMUC computer lab,university or public library, or otherreadily available source if the studentdoes not have home access. However,it should be regularly availableand the student must have a currente-mail address.All students currently enrolled atUMUC are eligible for a universitycomputer account on the UNIX systemPolaris. The computer accountprovides students an e-mail addressand access to many text-based servicessuch as Internet newsgroups, mailinglists, and programming languages.This computer account remains activeas long as the student is registered forclasses at UMUC.Taking Online ClassesBefore registering for an online course,students may want to consider thefollowing:1. Online students need to be preparedto write extensively, because nearlyall communication is written. Onlinestudents need strong English readingand writing skills.2. Online students need to be competentin the use <strong>of</strong> computers andcommonly used s<strong>of</strong>tware programs.3. Since WebTycho is asynchronousand students are expected to beactive participants online, studentsare encouraged to log in frequentlyto check what has transpired intheir online classroom (in lieu <strong>of</strong>classroom meetings).4. Online students need disciplinedwork habits, effective time managementskills, and the ability to workboth alone and collaboratively.Technical RequirementsMinimum technical requirements aresubject to change. Current informationabout technical requirements isavailable online at tychousa.umuc.edu/tech/min_tech.html. Students areresponsible for their own phone lineand Internet access costs.Technical requirements for studentstaking graduate courses includeA PC running Windows 2000 orhigher or a Macintosh running OS XA compatible Web browser (InternetExplorer 7.0 or higher for PC, Firefox3.0 for PC and Macintosh)A connection to the Internet (broadbandpreferred)An e-mail account A sound card with speakers orheadphones and a microphone Sun Java VM (can be downloadedfor free) Virus protection s<strong>of</strong>tware (updatedregularly) Control <strong>of</strong> the desktop to allows<strong>of</strong>tware downloadsSome academic programs may haveadditional technical requirements.Mandatory Course EvaluationsUMUC uses student feedback tomake decisions about future courses.The online evaluation is required toensure complete information fromevery student. Individual responsesare kept confidential. The evaluationnotice for online courses appears onthe class screen about 21 days beforethe end <strong>of</strong> the session. Students haveapproximately one week to completethe evaluation before access to theClass Menu is locked. If students do notopen the file and either respond to thequestions or click on “no response,”they are “locked out” <strong>of</strong> the Class Menuuntil they complete the evaluation. Aftercompleting the evaluation, access tothe classroom resumes.77
