Preparing for Graduate StudyAs most students know, more isexpected at the graduate level thanwhat is normally required on the undergraduatelevel. During graduate study,more effort is required on an academiclevel, and there are usually specialrequirements that must be completed atthe end of the student’s program. UMUCrequires students to complete comprehensiveexams and a dissertationonly at the doctoral level. While manytraditional master’s degree programsmay culminate with the completion ofa thesis, most UMUC programs requirean integrative end-of-program capstonecourse instead.Students should refer to the catalog ofthe year in which they began graduatestudy for the specific requirementsrelated to their program of study.All graduate students must maintaina cumulative grade point average(GPA) of 3.0 and receive no grade of Fto remain in good academic standing.Academic progress is assessed at theend of each session. Other requirements,such as time limits to degreecompletion, also apply; details areprovided on p. 129.NONPROGRAM COURSESBecause UMUC graduate studentsoften enter graduate study with academicbackgrounds in very differentfields and return to study after a gapof many years, UMUC offers a numberof courses outside the usual requiredprogram courses that are designed tohelp students succeed in their graduatestudies. Most of these courses are noncreditand optional; the course in libraryresearch skills, however, is required forall students entering graduate study atUMUC. Complete course descriptionsare provided on pp. 75–115.Required Course in LibraryResearch SkillsUCSP 611 Introduction to GraduateLibrary Research Skills is designedto familiarize students with onlinelibrary and information resources—material that is critical for 21st-centurymanagers.This noncredit course is required for allnew graduate students and all inactivestudents who reapply for admission.The grading method is pass/fail. UCSP611 must be completed within the first6 credits of graduate study.Elective Credit Course in WritingStudents who have been out ofacademia for a period of time or whodo not write often in their professionsare encouraged to enroll in COMM 600Academic Writing for Graduate Studentsin their first session. COMM 600is specially designed to reinforce andstrengthen the writing skills necessaryfor success in UMUC’s graduate degreeprograms. Although the course doesnot apply to any individual programrequirements, it does earn 3 credits.Elective Noncredit CoursesNoncredit courses (designated UCSP)are available in financial accounting,economics, Praxis test preparation,and research methods and generallylast five to eight weeks. Although thesecourses carry no UMUC credit, they appearon the students’ official academictranscript. At the successful conclusionof the course, a grade of P (Pass) isposted. UMUC graduate students mustbe admitted or have an application onfile before registering for noncreditcourses.Current information about fees andscheduling for noncredit courses isavailable at www.umuc.edu/grad/noncred.html.COURSE FORMATSUMUC offers courses online, on-site ata number of Maryland locations, and ina hybrid format that combines on-siteand online instruction.All Graduate School of Managementand Technology on-site courses useWebTycho, UMUC’s Web-based coursemanagement system, as an enhancement.Faculty members may elect touse some or all of WebTycho’s onlinefeatures in conjunction with face-tofaceinteraction in the classroom.Hybrid classes meet on-site at aUMUC location for about half theclass sessions; the remainder of thecourse material is covered online in theWebTycho classroom. The scheduleof on-site sessions is provided by thefaculty member at the beginning of theterm. Hybrid courses are identified inthe most current graduate Schedule ofClasses.Online courses maintain the sameacademic standards as on-site courses.Course content, texts, requirements,assignments, and class participationare comparable for online and on-sitecourses; for example, students need toadhere to a course schedule for assignmentdeadlines and exam times.Computer and Internet AccessUMUC is committed to ensuring thatstudents acquire the level of technologicalfluency needed for activeparticipation in contemporary societyand access to up-to-date resources.All UMUC students must be prepared toparticipate in asynchronous, computerbasedclass discussions, study groups,online database searches, courseevaluations, and other online activities.This policy applies to students in bothclassroom-based and online courses.6
All UMUC students must thereforeensure that they have some type ofInternet access. This access may bethrough use of a UMUC computer lab,university or public library, or otherreadily available source if the studentdoes not have home access. However,it should be regularly availableand the student must have a currente-mail address.All students currently enrolled atUMUC are eligible for a universitycomputer account on the UNIX systemPolaris. The computer accountprovides students an e-mail addressand access to many text-based servicessuch as Internet newsgroups, mailinglists, and programming languages.This computer account remains activeas long as the student is registered forclasses at UMUC.Taking Online ClassesBefore registering for an online course,students may want to consider thefollowing:1. Online students need to be preparedto write extensively, because nearlyall communication is written. Onlinestudents need strong English readingand writing skills.2. Online students need to be competentin the use of computers andcommonly used software programs.3. Since WebTycho is asynchronousand students are expected to beactive participants online, studentsare encouraged to log in frequentlyto check what has transpired intheir online classroom (in lieu ofclassroom meetings).4. Online students need disciplinedwork habits, effective time managementskills, and the ability to workboth alone and collaboratively.Technical RequirementsMinimum technical requirements aresubject to change. Current informationabout technical requirements isavailable online at tychousa.umuc.edu/tech/min_tech.html. Students areresponsible for their own phone lineand Internet access costs.Technical requirements for studentstaking graduate courses includeA PC running Windows 2000 orhigher or a Macintosh running OS XA compatible Web browser (InternetExplorer 7.0 or higher for PC, Firefox3.0 for PC and Macintosh)A connection to the Internet (broadbandpreferred)An e-mail account A sound card with speakers orheadphones and a microphone Sun Java VM (can be downloadedfor free) Virus protection software (updatedregularly) Control of the desktop to allowsoftware downloadsSome academic programs may haveadditional technical requirements.Mandatory Course EvaluationsUMUC uses student feedback tomake decisions about future courses.The online evaluation is required toensure complete information fromevery student. Individual responsesare kept confidential. The evaluationnotice for online courses appears onthe class screen about 21 days beforethe end of the session. Students haveapproximately one week to completethe evaluation before access to theClass Menu is locked. If students do notopen the file and either respond to thequestions or click on “no response,”they are “locked out” of the Class Menuuntil they complete the evaluation. Aftercompleting the evaluation, access tothe classroom resumes.77
