It wasthe third CIF championship in the school'shistory.Mrs. Dawson's quest for a secondchampionship, th is time in basketball, wasfoited when her Chardinals fell in thequarter-finals to Brawley , 61-60, aftermaking the 385-mile trip to the desert.Bishop was top-seeded in the play<strong>of</strong>fs.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Barbara</strong> High's soccer team wasthe only local squad heavily favored io win achampionship and the top-ranked Donsdidn't upset the odds. Gary Fischer, <strong>of</strong>Dos Pueblos, at 106 pounds and MikeGordon, <strong>of</strong> San Marcos, at 141 , each took thetitle in their respective weight classificationsat the e lF wrestling finals. Fischer then wenton to win the slate championship a weeklater.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Barbara</strong> H igh's basketballsq uad gave local fans many thrills byreaching the elF quarter-finals before fallingto eventual Class AAAA champion LongBeach Poly before a jam-packed crowd at theSBCC Sports Pavilion. Bishop Diego wasco-champion <strong>of</strong> the Tri-Valley League andwas eliminated in the second round <strong>of</strong> theClass A play<strong>of</strong>fs, while Carpinteria lost in thefirst round.San Marcos breezed to the ChannelLeague championship and then took seventhplace in the CIF championship swimmingmeet.
