Favorite Memory The Dagg Brothers: The day I came aboard, on of the Dragg brothers was on the after 

brow and signed me aboard, gave me directions to the office and to the berthing 

compartment. As I was on my way to the berthing compartment to stow my sea bag, I 

passed the guy who had just signed me aboard only now he was in dungarees instead of 

his undress blues and coming from the direction I was going. I immediately knew that 

this guy and the one on watch must be twins, but had never encountered the situation 

before and thought it was quite funny. 

Worst Memory The day I was transferred off of the Bryce Canyon, I had been aboard for four years and 

had gotten to know most of the men on board and had become friends with many of them 

and knew that I would not e seeing most of them again.

Special Comments I'd like to hear by email from anyone who was stationed on board the USS BRYCE 

CANYON between 3 August 1962 and 17 January 1966. I started out in the Supply 

office as a ship service man, worked in the main GSK and in the other supply areas. 

Had a run in with the mustang lieutenant running the supply department and ended up 

working mess cooking for nine months straight. He was requested to retire and I was 

relieved from mess cooking and sent to the repair office as a Draftsman. I moved to 

Las Vegas and ran into a guy who had worked TAD in the repair office as a 

Draftsman when I went to work for the Las Vegas Valley Water District as a 

Draftsman in 1978.

on Liberty. One evening I came back from the Hickman Airmen's Club on the last launch 

and found out that two hours earlier, I had taken the launch and ran it into an air craft 

carrier. I found out the next day that the proverbial twin everyone has was also on the 

B.C. and was the Coxswain who did run over the air craft carrier. I never got to meet 

him because he was sent to the Brig of the B.C. and discharged.

Worst Memory Along with Dick Ingram, changing a synchro in the SR radar antenna pedestal while 

underway with rough seas. The pedestal was aft about 50 ft above the main deck. The 

ship was rolling so bad that every time I looked down to the side, I saw water. Even with 

a safety belt on I was petrified. It's a good thing Dick Ingram was there or the synchro 

would never have been replaced.

Favorite Memory Taking a dependent's cruise to Hilo, Hawaii. The Royal Australian Navy Band (RAN) 

went on the cruise with us. They played on the main deck while the mess cooks were 

grilling steaks. We were winding our way slowly from Pearl Harbor to the big island. 

The sea was calm and the sun was peaking through the clouds. The music, ladies voices, 

the scenery and the aroma of steaks on the grill made the cruise unforgettable. 

Worst Memory A shakedown cruise where we lost fire in the boilers and the ship went dead in the water 

in the middle of the night. The only light we had ship was from battle lanterns. The 

engine room was blistering hot without any power for ventilation fans. The batteries to 

start the emergency diesel generator were dead. We had to pull batteries from the 

Captain's and Officer's gigs to start the generator. The boilers were eventually restarted 

and normal power was restored. That was good because the ship was listing 13 degrees 

to port.

Taiwan in '73 when there were 30 ft swells and I could see the ships propeller when it 

came out of the water. Mess duty for 3 months on 3rd shift which gave me a lot of time

Special Comments When I left the Bryce Canyon in 1968 I went to NAS Atsugi, Japan. I didn't finish my 

normal three year tour at Atsugi because the Navy thought they were going to close the 

Aircraft Repair facility there (they didn't). In June of 1971 I received orders to the 

USS HANCOCK CVA-29 and in July of 1973 I retired (transferred to Fleet Reserve) 

with 23 Yrs of service. 

After retirement I obtained employment with Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, CA where I 

worked as a plant engineer. I stayed with Kaiser for five years until a job came up at 

McKasson Research Center in Dublin, CA. (This reduced my commute from 35 MI to 

1 MI). Over the years because of corporate name changes, being sold, etc, I ended up 

working for Clayton Environmental Consultants. I retired from Clayton in Apr 1994. 

We sold our home in Pleasanter, Ca and moved to Grass Valley where we had owned 

a second home since 1979. We purchased a motor home and have spent a fair amount 

of time running around the country.

Special Comments I recall when we arrived in Charleston, there weren't any supplies on board, and at first 

we took our meals at the Shipyard. I remember asking my Chief one day (G C Caroll) 

if I could go ashore for cigarettes. He said that we were to busy loading the ship, and I 

would have to go some other time. He said he needed to go to the bathroom, but there 

wasn't time. After working with him in the Office of the Supply Division for more 

than a year, I learned what a tough job he had. It seemed to me after a period, he was 

the only one that knew what was going on. That included the Supply Officer and the 

Stores Officer. Somehow, we got her loaded and left Charleston, never to return. I 

have no idea what happened to the BRYCE CANYON. Maybe junked?

Special Comments In 1956, we bought a car and were headed for Great Lakes Training. Orva was going 

for more schooling. We were driving on the West Virginia Turnpike when we had a 

bad accident. Orva was hit on the left side of his head and was in a coma for 21 days. 

He spent a year at Portsmouth Hospital. He was discharged with 100% disability. He 

could drive, cut yards and do things that didn't need much brain work. Orva passed 

away on January 26, 1993. We had him for 37 yrs longer than we thought we would 

have him.

Favorite Memory 1. Getting a boat ride over to the Arizona Memorial, using one of BC's boats. We could 

pretty much spend as much time there as we wanted, which you can't do now. I think we 

were there for about an hour. 

2. Working in the Carpentry shop was a good time. Good people there. 

Worst Memory 1. Turning my shoes upside down in the morning and some cockroaches spilled out. 2. 

In the summer of '69 we switched homeports from Long Beach to Pearl Harbor. Left LB 

at 10:30 am on Thursday and I was seasick from 2:30 pm Thursday until I woke up 

Saturday morning. It was awful, but I never got seasick after that, even on my next ship, 

a DE. 3. Getting overcome by the fumes of some deck sealant we were using on a deck 

job on one of the destroyers. After that event, Ed Mills (the shop PO) said he'd change 

brands and we'd never use that stuff again.

Favorite Memory When using moulages of injured crewmen, a sailor was made up as injured with a major 

bone protruding thru his trousers. He laid down in the ship and we hid to see what would 

happen. Shortly thereafter, an Officer came upon this severely injured man and hollered 

"wait here, I'll go get help" and ran off. He later returned with the Ship's Doctor. We 

removed the injured sailor with the moulage and the Officer tried to convince the Doctor 

that there was, or had been an injured sailor lying "right there" where he was pointing! 

We, several of us, including the injured sailor, were hiding around the corner, barely 

containing our laughter. To this day, we never told anybody about our deception, but it's 

still funny.

and the ensuing search. The ship being struck 3 times at the dock in a one week period 

by other ships coming alongside, especially the USS KNOX which punched a one sq. ft 

hole amid ships. Sliding large billets of bronze off the top of the Bullard turret lathe to 

the deck and rattling the nerves off the guys in the mold shop below me. 

Worst Memory Having a total brain fart and machining way too much material from a Leslie top cap and 

having to explain to my Division Officer, W04 Cobb, why I was such a dunce. He was 

really a great guy along with Chief Goodall ("Turn Two") Chief Valt ("A poor machinist 

blames his machine"). MR1 Conway and the other guys in my division.

Special Comments The Bryce Canyon was a great ship to be on, but probably not the best place for a 

young sailor, 17 years old, who needed more discipline. When I came aboard they
