Special Comments In 1946 Jack bought his dad's ranch, and ranched for 21 years, until 1967. Then he 

sold the ranch and went to work for the Deerlodge National Forest Service for 20 

years. Retired 1983. At age 65 he had a horse accident that injured his brain stem, 

leaving him with no balance. Now at age 72 he is walking with a walker, going to 

Senior Citizens, and playing pinochle with friends.

to San Diego, CA. All were called to Quarter in dress uniform and my name was called 

for me to come forward. (Thinking what did I do wrong now), I was presented with a 

Presidential Unit Citation, one star, for participation previously in the capture of the 

U505 while aboard the USS Jenks in the Atlantic off Normandy. This was much earlier 

and the citation had just caught up with me.

evenings around mount 55 on the fantail, then movie call outside. Audie Murphy was in 

every film announced on the 1MC. Un-announced swim call in Guam. Hot bread out of 

the galley at 3AM. Hong Kong, Subic Bay, Sasebo visits in '58. 

Worst Memory Typhoon in S China Sea. Broke our mast…Quemoy/Matsu patrols (8 on 8 Off and GQ 

all day for about 30 days). Two of us received a medal in Atlanta from the Chinese for 

this duty in 1998 or 1999.

Special Comments Pleasure to serve with the great crew we had. Worked hard and played hard. Ship 

almost sank moored in a nest in port. OOD kept telling the ship beside us that they 

were rising out of the water. We had ruptured fire main aft and flooding. Remember 

getting out of my middle sleeping rack in waist deep water.

Worst Memory March 17, 1945 Sixty miles Southeast of Kyushu, Japan a kamikaze plane plunged 

through our fantail with a bomb which exploded leaving a gaping hole through the deck 

and out of the bottom of our ship. Through exceptional damage control we were able to 

get back to Ulithi and a floating dry dock for temporary repairs and to Terminal Island 

for permanent repairs. Twelve men were killed and 29 were wounded in the incident.

Special Comments For health reasons I may not be able to attend, but would like to say the HALSEY 

POWELL was a ship I hold very close to my heart, and no better shipmates ever lived. 

The two Skippers we had during 1943-45 was the cream of the crop, CDR McGurrey 

and CDR Murrell. CDR Murrell was only 32 yrs old when he assumed command, but 

no braver cool headed Skipper ever lived. It was through his leadership and the grace 

of God we survived the kamikaze attack. I was aboard the USS Boxer (CV-21) during 

the Korean War and to my surprise, I was on a fueling station and we were refueling 

destroyers and I looked out and here came my love USS Halsey Powell DD-686. She 

had been recommissioned during the Korean War. What a beautiful sight. When we 

returned to Yokosuka, Japan, I went aboard her. The OD was very nice offered to

Special Comments I left the Halsey Powell to go to Yale Medical School. I was one of two veterans in 

my class. We were serious about being in school and more mature than our classmates, 

even though some were older. I wrote a prize winning thesis on chromosomes. I then 

did a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Calif at San Francisco. 

Subsequently I joined the faculty and rose to the rank of Professor and Associate 

Dean. My research concentrated on hereditary eye disease and ocular complications of 

AIDS. 

My experience of meeting many wonderful people and learning mutual respect on the 

Halsey Powell was a formative lesson for a 22 year old. Later in life I held multiple 

leadership positions in medical education and research. I am most proud of being the 

first white man to win a Martin Luther King award from the University of California 

for effectively fostering diversity and mutual respect.

through 1st Div compartment. Managed to trip over Jacobs who was physically on 

hands and knees foxtailing the deck, lost my balance, but attempting to right myself 

using the 3-tiered bunk beds heard him yell out, OUCH,. Can't you see the whites of my 

eyeballs. This was my very first of many good friends that I encountered on the Powell.

Favorite Memory Not poking a hole in the hull when the starboard shaft parted under full power, 1963. 

That made all the hours and hours of casualty drills and training pay off. That had never 

happened to another Destroyer. It was said to be impossible to stop and lock the shaft 

under those conditions without severe reduction gear damage. We had none. 

Worst Memory Material condition of the drains and boiler casings when we were deployed to Christmas 

and Operation Dominic Nuclear testing program. The drain condition resulted in oil in 

the water from the bilges which resulted in water hours until the cause was found and 

corrected. The resulting letters of reprimand were a severe blow to otherwise career 

Naval officers.

most memorable. I always enjoy reading about those who served before me on that

Favorite Memory The most memorable moments was off the coast of San Francisco when we were 

refueling. The USS Shields and the Halsey Powell were refueling along side the oiler at 

the same time when we got word we were on a collision course with a commercial 

freighter. The worst happened, the oiler and the Shields collided and we did an 

emergency breakaway. No damage to the Halsey Powell except for black oil all over it 

where the fueling hoses were cut from axes. We sat for several hours to help the oiler 

and the Shields. Damage was minimal. To my knowledge no personnel were injured. I 

was part of the decommissioning when the Halsey Powell was given to a foreign country.

Worst Memory During our Formosa Straits patrol (1958 Cruise) we participated in helping the 

Nationalist Chinese run the communist blockade of Quemoy and Matsu Islands from the 

18th of September through the 28th of September. At one point, I spent 54 days on 

board without touching land.

Favorite Memory There are so many. I guess the most vivid memory is the rescue of ten downed aviators 

off the coast of China, near Swatow, on Jan. 18, 1953 

Worst Memory Being junior ship in our division in the First Korean Cruise (08-51 to 02-52) got us all 

the dog assignments nobody else wanted. We were on patrol in the Formosa Straits and 

were scheduled to visit Hong Kong (the highlight event in a Korean Cruise) next, but 

instead we went back to Task Force 77 in the Japanese Sea off Korea to relieve the USS 

Small, which had hit a mine. We never made it to Hong Kong until the Second Korean 

Cruise.
