MOPICO ®Gas pipeline compression systemsThe MOPICO ® is a unique state-of-the-art integrated motor-driven pipelinecompression system. The simple, compact and cost-effective designconcept results in a highly reliable and largely maintenance-free systemwith the highest efficiencies over the complete operating range.Design characteristicsThe MOPICO ® compression systemsare available in various frame sizes, determinedby the required motor rating.The product range can accommodateflow rates of between 190,000 Nm 3 /h to1,890,000 Nm 3 /h and pressure ratios ofapproximately 2.Basic design: the ultimate in conceptualsimplicity – single rotating element,two radial and one axial bearing,no couplings, no gear box, nolube oil, no shaft seals to atmosphere.Motor: high-frequency variable-speedinduction motor. The rotor shaft isextended on both sides with asingle, overhung impeller mounted oneach end.Bearings: the rotor shaft is suspendedby two radial magnetic bearings andpositioned by a single axial magneticbearing.Cooling: the motor and magneticbearings are cooled by process gas,bled after the first compression stageand subsequently recycled into thesuction system.Hermetically-sealed pressurizedsystem: dictated by the motor cooling,the complete system operates ata pressure approximately equal to thesystem intake pressure. The threepiecevertically-split outer casing isdesigned for operation at pressuresof up to 150 bar.Drive system: the motor is driven bya solid state, variable frequency drivesystem (VSDS), remotely located fromthe compressor building.Product rangeThe MOPICO ® is available with motorpowers ranging from approximately 3MW (4,000 HP) to 18 MW (24,000 HP)based on three motor frame sizes. Themotor and compressor componentsare standardized to maintain the externalgeometry of the units. This results instandardized dimensions. A wide selectionof impeller types with varyingwidths and diameters ensures optimalthermodynamic efficiencies.Principal featuresThe MOPICO ® is a hermetically-sealed,integrated electric motor-compressorsystem designed especially for gas pipelineapplications. The unique concept ofthe system results in the lowest capital,operating and maintenance costs.Main featuresHigh-frequency, squirrel-cage inductionmotor directly connected to twoseparate compression stages at eachend of the motor shaft. The motor iscooled by process gas at a pressureapproximately equal to the pipelinesuction pressure.Two separate compression stageswhich can be connected in bothseries and/or parallel, which togetherwith the motor speed variation providesthe widest possible operatingrange.The rotating assembly is a stiff shaftdesign with a margin greater than25 % to the first lateral bending mode.The hermetically-sealed design andthe elimination of oil systems resultin an environmentally neutral system,1 MOPICO ® compact compression system for gas transport


Compressor casinghaving no effect on the local environ-ment with respect to pollutiveemissions.1Contact-free magnetic bearings, togetherwith the elimination of couplings,gears and shaft seals toatmosphere result in a largely wearandmaintenance-free system.System conceptThe MOPICO ® is an integrated, engineeredsystem comprising of the motorcompressor unit, the variable frequencydrive and the unit/station control system.By means of a dedicated pipe/valve system, the two compressionstages can be connected either in seriesand/or in parallel with changeoverfrom one mode to the other.Control and safety systemsThe control system performs unit andoverall station control functions, suchas valve sequencing and surge control.The system connects with the SCADApipeline system for remote operationand monitoring. The use of magneticbearings virtually eliminates thetransmission of vibrations from the unit,resulting in substantially reduced foun-dation costs. Thanks to the magnetic bearings andthe thickness of the high-pressure motor casing, theMOPICO ® noise emission levels are extremely low.
