Nevertheless, weare blessed in this country that thefounding spirit and purpose ofpolicing (inspired by Bury-bornrobert Peel) still works for the benefitof society.it is disgraceful when, called toemergencies, the police - and fireand rescue, and ambulance officers- are sometimes attacked.in recognising such perils theyencounter (with a decreasing numberof officers - the likely outcomeof austerity cut-backs), we shouldhold Greater Manchester’s police,fire and rescue, and ambulance services,regularly in our public andprivate prayers.in this remembrance month letus thank God for the men andwomen of the civilian and armedforces who put themselves at riskfor us – especially those who havebeen injured or lost their lives onour behalf.New staff forChurch HouseThe Revd Stephen Tranter has joined the diocese asLocal Ministry Officer. Stephen was Hospital Chaplainin the Morecambe Bay Teaching Hospitals NHSFoundation Trust and House for Duty Priest in Ellel, StJohn and Shireshead St James, Blackburn.We have also been joined by Colin Barson, the newParish Development Officer.Colin has had a varied career in local councils, thepolice force, as a training officer and lecturer and latterlyas CEO of Voluntary and Community Action Trafford.He has been involved in a number of initiatives withinthe diocese at parish level and sits on the PovertyCommission.CRUX also welcomes the Revd Julia Babb whotakes up the post of Diocesan Clergy Training Officer inDecember.Currently Rector of the Whittington Benefice inDerby Diocese, Julia previously served as an incumbentin Newcastle Diocese and curate of Langley andParkfield in Manchester.She has been involved in initial training and as atraining incumbent in both Derby and Newcastle diocesesand is working towards a doctorate from ChesterUniversity. She replaces the Revd David Foster.R.I.P.Reverend Brian SagarTHE Revd Brian Sagar former Priest in Charge of StStephen and All Martyrs Lever Bridge, Bolton has diedpeaceably in hospital following a short illness.Brian was ordained in this diocese in 1980 andserved as Curate at St Thomas and St John Radcliffebefore being appointed Priest in Charge of St GeorgeCharlestown.In 1982 he became Rector of St Michael's GreatLever, after which his social concerns led him to aChaplaincy with Coventry Church HousingAssociation.After incumbencies in Oxford and Ely he returned tothe Diocese and to Lever Bridge prior to retirement in2005. A full cathedral saw people commissioned to pastoralministry, children’s ministry, worship ministry and to a ministry of prayer and spirituality.COMINGS & GOINGSAppoiNTmeNTSThe Revd Raymond morris, currently incumbentof St Mark, Heyside, to become, in addition,Assistant Curate in St Anne, Longsight, Royton.The Revd James Read, currently Priest in Chargeof St Anne, Longsight, Royton, to become, inaddition, Assistant Curate in St Mark, Heyside.The Revd Liz Devall, currently Assistant Curatein St Anne, Longsight, Royton, to become, inaddition, Assistant Curate in St Mark, Heyside.The Parishes of St Mark, Heyside and St Anne,Longsight, Royton form the Heyside and Longsight,Royton Mission Partnership. The Licensings andpublic launch of the Heyside and Longsight, RoytonMission Partnership took place on September 30.The Bishop of Manchester, in consultation withthe Dean and Chapter, has appointed the Revdphilip Barratt to be Canon Precentor of theCathedral. He will be installed and collated in theCathedral on Advent Sunday (December 2).The Revd Jane Vost ceased as Chaplain to NorthManchester General Hospital on August 31. She isto be Chaplain in the Wrightington, Wigan andLeigh NHS Foundation Trust in addition to herrole as Assistant curate OLM at St Andrew’s,Radcliffe.ReTiRemeNTSThe Revd Canon Ting Suie Roy Chow, incumbentof The Good Shepherd (Church of theResurrection) and St Barnabas Manchester willretire with effect from January 12 2013. He willbecome Canon Emeritus on retirement.The Revd Joan Stephens, Assistant curate OLMin Irlam and Cadishead, retires with effect fromOctober 31 2012. She will hold the Bishop’s permissionto officiate in the diocese with effect fromthat date.
