Rather, most type modificationsare made to improve appearancerather than performance. An example isthe removal of a mud flap together with thereflector. The allegedly better appearanceis, however, to the detriment of the rider’ssafety. The second most frequently criticisedpoint (handlebars) is often due to the factthat the owner of the vehicle does not knowthat type modifications to handlebars mustbe registered. The reason for this is to ensurethat handlebars are not mounted that,for example, have an inadequate steeringangle thus compromising the driver’s safety.In principle, any modification that is carriedout on an assembly can have a negative impacton road handling and modifications toseveral assemblies can influence each otherand further increase the risk of an accident.The test results from the technicalmonitoring of motorcycles from otherEuropean countries are not available or areonly partially available. In Italy for examplefew details of the results are recorded.Nonetheless, the results should be more orless comparable with those from Germany.A look at the technical inspections carriedout in Slovenia confirms this.
