Road accidents and vehicle defects1Example 3TECHNICAL DEFECT IN THE TYRE VALVE2Sequence of events leading up to the accident:A motorcycle with two occupants was travellingalong a main road when it toppled over. Themotorcyclist was flung under the safety barrierand the passenger lay on the ground close to themotorcycle. The front wheel did not show anysigns of impact but there was no air pressure inthe tyre.Vehicle involved:Motorrad Yamaha XV 1100 Virago (chopper).Consequences of the accident/injuries:The motorcyclist was fatally injured in the impactagainst a safety barrier post. The passenger sufferedserious injuries as a result of the fall. Themotorcycle sustained damage.3541 Photograph showingskid marks2 Final resting positionof the motorcycle3 Impact marks onthe post of the safetybarrier4 Pressureless tyre onthe front wheel5 Used damaged valve6 Valve caps compared7 Some of the protectiveclothing wornCauses of the problem:The tracks at the scene of the accident indicatedthat the motorcycle went out of control and toppledover due to a loss of air pressure in the fronttyre. Other reasons for the motorcycle to toppleover cannot be deduced from the findings at thescene of the accident. A laboratory test carriedout on the tubeless front tyre, which had been fittedshortly before the accident, together with thewheel rim, showed that the valve was old and hadozone cracks. It had been incorrectly fitted overa long period of time and was set at an angle. Inaddition, a heavy metal valve cap had been fittedwhich, in conjunction with the sloping position, placed additional pressure on the valve. Understatic pressure load the valve was not air tight, which quickly led to drop in tyre pressure duringdynamic movement.67Avoidance possibilities/approach to road safety measures:When the front tyre was replaced the valve shouldalso have been replaced. Downstand beams supportingthe safety barrier could have protected themotorcyclist, having been flung from his motorcycle, from impacting against the safety barrierposts.Other characteristics of the accident:Speed of the motorcycle prior to toppling over:approx. 60–65Both motorcycle passengers were wearing helmetsand appropriate attire with boots and gloves.
