IntroductionHigh fun factor – but also high riskMotorcycling has always been fascinating. No other form of motorised locomotion gives the driver a comparable feeling of dynamism,agility and freedom. But right from the start the special fascination of motorcycling was accompanied by an increased risk of seriousaccidents. On top of that, motorcycles – despite all the positive developments, especially in recent years – cannot possibly offer the sameactive and passive safety as passenger cars.Although the 2009 economic and financialcrisis no more spared the motorcycleindustry than any other vehicle manufacturer,the fascination of the motorcycle isundiminished. According to the “Report<strong>2010</strong>” of the Association des ConstructeursEuropéens de Motocycles (ACEM)(European motorcycle manufacturers’association), in 2008 there were morethan 33 million two-wheeled motorvehicles in use in Europe. The ACEM isexpecting this figure to rise to between35 and 37 million by 2020. Two-wheeledmotor vehicles encompass motorcycles,scooters and mopeds. At 22.2 million,motorcycles accounted for around 66%of the 33.7 million two-wheeled motorvehicles. This means a rise of almost 40%compared to 2001, when there were some16 million motorcycles. At 1 January2009, the EU countries with the mostregistered motorcycles were Italy (5.9million), Germany (3.7 million), Spain(2.5 million) and France (1.4 million).As far as Germany is concerned, engineswith a cylinder capacity of between500 cm 3 and 749 cm 3 accounted for thebiggest proportion (27.5%) of all registeredmotorcycles. The larger cylindercapacity categories taken together hada share of 32.6% (Figure 1). It is alsointeresting to note that, in the last 20years the average age of all registeredmotorcycles has risen much higher thanthat of the passenger car. While, in 1990,the average age of motorcycles was justunder eight years and that of passengercars was more than six years, in 2009 theaverage age of registered motorcycleswas just over thirteen years, whereasthat of passenger cars was “just” a littleover eight years. used quite differently from passengercars and are essentially a “recreationalobject”. In the first few years afterpurchase motorcycles are mostly riddena great deal. With increasing age, notonly does the number of vehicles fallbut the annual mileage also decreases.Older motorcycles that are not put outof operation gradually acquire the statusof collectors’ or classic vehicles, whichare moved very little but are mostly welllooked after. This does not of courseapply to motorcycles that can be riddenfrom the age of 16 with a Category A1driving licence.
