Por Sheila Levinphotos by River Karmenabril / mayo vieques eventsEl CabaretUna Velada Chispeante de MúsicaThe CabaretA Sparkling Evening of MusicThe Fourth Annual <strong>Vieques</strong> POPs confirmed once again thatno one has as much fun as musicians - the featured stars ofthe POPs, Carola Ausbury and Luis Marin, wrapped up theirtalent, their warmth and their joy, tied it with a rhythmic bowand made a gift to the audience that we will long remember.This cabaret version of the POPS, sponsored the the <strong>Vieques</strong>Conservation and HistoricalTrust, started with drinks and hord’oeuvres on the lawn of the W Spaand Retreat, and then packed theW auditorium to hear Mark Martin Bras,VCHT Directorof Community Relations, by now an experienced andutterly charming MC, welcome the guests and introduceCarola Ausbury, Luis Marin and the “Big Band”who came together for the first time for this specialperformance.The evening was a benefit for the VCHT, whosemission is to foster, study, educate, protect andconserve the environment, the archaeological andcultural resources of <strong>Vieques</strong>. This evening supportedthe children of <strong>Vieques</strong> through the MANTA program,which serves many of <strong>Vieques</strong>’ young people.Carola and Luis Marin delivered a perfect blendof American classic songs and Puerto Rican andInternational favorites. Broadway tunes, Gershwin,and Miles Davis were well represented with Caroladelivering her “favorite” Round Midnight to a standing ovation. Marin, aclassical pianist very much in demand, led the band in several pure jazzrenditions, sweet and poignant, while his solo was stunning for the clarityof the notes and the passion of his performance.A saxophone quartette brought the house down, as did lively renditionsof “A tisket, a tasket”, “Preciosa” and “Cry Me a River” sung byCarola Ausbury.After a champagne reception, hosted by the W Spa and Retreat, the eveningresumed with more show tunes and Big Band spectaculars. Barbara Hyland,the President of the VCHT, took a moment to thank both, the W, Mark Martin, andthe many people who cooperated on the concert, especially Jerry Hanley, whowas in charge of the evening. nLa Cuarta Edición del <strong>Vieques</strong> Pops confirmó una vez más que nadie se diviertetanto como los músicos – las estrellas más destacadas del evento, CarolaAusbury y Luis Marín, envolvieron al público con su talento, calidez y alegría,acompañados de movimientos rítmicos, que fueron un regalo a la audiencia, ylos cuales recordarán por siempre.Esta versión de cabaret del POPS, auspiciada por el Fideicomiso deConservación e Historia de <strong>Vieques</strong>, comenzó con coctéles yentremeses en los predios del W Spa and Retreat y continuó enel auditorio lleno del W al escuchar a Mark Martin Bras, Directorde Relaciones con la Comunidad del VCHT, experimentado yencantador Maestro de Ceremonias, donde daba la bienvenidaa los invitados y presentaba a Carola Ausbury, Luis Marín y ala “Big Band”, quienes vinieron por primera vez a esta presentaciónespecial.La gala fue a beneficio del VCHT, cuya misión es fomentar,estudiar, educar, proteger y conservar el ambiente, la arqueologíay los recursos culturales de <strong>Vieques</strong>. Melodías de Broadway,Gershwin y Miles Davis fueron bienrepresentadas por Carola, interpretando sufavorita “Round Midnight” recibiendo una granovación de pie. Marín, pianista de músicaclásica de gran demanda, dirigió a la orquestaen varias entregas de jazz, dulces y conmovedoras,mientras su solo fue sorprendentepor la claridad de las notas y la pasión de supresentación.Un cuarteto de saxofón deleitó la velada,así como versiones animadas de “A tisket, a tasket”, Preciosa y “Cry Me a River”cantadas por Carola Ausbury.Luego de la recepción con champaña, organizada por el W Spa and Retreat,la velada se animó con variedades de ritmos y con la “Big Band”.
